Thoughts: The engine itself isn't that bad and probably the highest quality thing on this machine. The rest is definitely China budget quality. A few manufactures have had the ultra compact car; the Chery QQ converted into an off road machine. This Oreion Reeper and the Joyner Trooper being the most popular. Would I buy one? Probably Not. It is going to be a constant maintenance machine with non-stop breakage, especially if you take it off road. You would be better off with a 10-15year old name brand Side X Side. If you want to road drive a machine though, this would be a decent option. It already has a horn, turn signals, headlights, windshield with wipers and fluid, radio, etc. It has better road/pavement manners than a true side by side UTV which is to be expected since it's essentially just a compact car.
WHY it ate the piston rings on only #3. I think it was due to low oil and the 3rd piston being the last one on the oiling circuit. There wasn't enough oil to spray up though the squirter to cool and lubricate the 3rd piston.
Where I bought OEM Chery parts from: Ali Express
Chery SQR 372 800cc
3 cylinder 12 Valve
51hp/51ftlbs torque 6000rpm
2014 Oreion Reeper 4x4
Chery QQ
Joyner Trooper
Duruxx DRX2 DRX3
John Deere Gator 825i

Nice work! Those Chinese rings are good for another 10 hours.
Probably
LMAO!
You're a brave man, to tear into the entirely unknown that someone else owns. You're a old shop soul, my guy. Take care.
Hey thanks
I know right! Someone can do it though! It is possible. :D
You know you run a good channel when near every comment is either interesting or informative
Hey Thanks
That owner is so lucky that you said yes to fixing it :-D
It sounds perfect for a little engine, no odd sounds, nicely balanced.
Excellent job moe, i'm not supprised that it runs so nice, you are so good at engineering.
I don't think there is much you can't fix.
You are a jack of all trades.
Remind the owner OIL OIL OIL :-D
It's amazing how long stuff will last of you just keep oil in it. Thanks.
@@sixtyfiveford And with only 3 qts, not much tolerance for neglect.
Big respect for taking on a job no one wants and respect for the diagnostics of the problem.
Someone has spent a lot of time and effort into that little side by side. I love your dog, looks a lot of fun.
Hey Thanks
Good tip on wrapping parts for storage. Love your videos , always find a nugget of info. That one was pure gold, no more missing and dirty items..
Thanks. It just always seams that grit gets in all the clean areas on the part because motor oil was there. Then I waste precious time cleaning everything.
This is a neighbor I could totally get along with. That’s freaking cool👍
Awesome
Dude, I need you as a new best friend! You rock. Great content. Great knowledge without a bunch of attitude or boring time wasting. Keep up doing what you have been gifted to do!
I live in jasper tx and just put an engine in one of those,I had never worked on one before but I Changed the engine and it's cramped on space but not really any different from working on a small front wheel drive. It was cool to see you do the topend considering the engine I put in was supposed to be running and when I finished I got it to run but it has a blown head gasket so I'll be repairing that now. Thanks for the insight and nice job 👍
Awesome. I found parts pretty cheap from Aliexpress direct from China.
Great rebuilding video, very interesting how they set the motor that way to get four-wheel-drive out of it what a great idea, Thank you for all your interesting content
Thanks Vince. -Moe
I bet your already looking for a crippled one of these carts!👍 Great video and interesting as usual. The longer videos are welcome in my camp.👍👍
Ginger is so adorable and smart. Great watch brother👌👍👍.thank you for sharing.
Another very interesting video, Thanks for taking the time to make it.
Thanks Glen
Dude your dog is a trip. He's up in the middle of it all. You did a fantastic job on that rebuild. Love the video.
Hey thanks
i would have thought by now, chinese or not something like piston rings should be available to just order by size locally .. good job love the reminder marks
Guessing that given he needed a new gasket set it was easier to just order from China.
You would think piston rings are pretty universal for bore but the like to change the thicknesses all the time. I ran into this years ago trying to rebuild a chainsaw and just ordered off the bore. Ended up having to get a piston and ring set.
If you were actually able to determine the size of rings needed you probably could identify a domestic source.
That is an awesome 4x4, great job fixing it up!
Hey thanks
I had a 1991 Ford Escort GT 2 door hatchback with a 5 speed manual when I was in high school and damn I miss that car. Seeing your Escort takes me back.
Great job Moe .. You fixed it right up !!
Thanks 👍
Dude, just for your patience and authentic demeanor. U have another sub
Awesome!
Nice one! That's a nice little engine. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Bruce. -Moe
Great video. I always learn something when I watch your vids. Thanks man! Give Ginger a hug for me.
Thanks man. She's doing well and got the head wrap in the video off last night.
Good Job. No problem with product. This was caused by operator negligence. Late 70's Suzuki 4×4s were bad mouthed back in the day as well, but turned out to be affordable and reliable.
When I was younger I had a customer with a recently rebuilt Toyota MR2 that was burning oil like this reaper, on a lot of motors you really need the service manual because what I found is that the rings all had a certain position they had to be in,not just the old school staggering the rings method!Once the rings were positioned correctly no more oil consumption 👍👍
2:08 this is why I don't loan out anything I'm not willing to lose. Even the IDIOT light went right over bro-in-laws head. Never expect people to have the same intelligence or motivation to take care of your stuff. I bet bro didn't even offer to pay to fix it either.
Amen.
Amen to that
I used to keep junk equipment around for when people wanted to borrow something. Now, it's my personal policy to loan out nothing. Ever.
Spot on!
My view based on hard experience is if bod wants x then they can pay for it, if they can't/wont pay for it then they shaw as hell won't respect or look after yours if you are so stupid to lend it to them.
My dad has owned one of these for over 10 years. Surprisingly no big issues. He has 100's of hours with it on montana dirt roads.
Ginger is awesome as always. I'm glad she’s healed up!
Hey thanks
The guys who don't want to work on these little engines may have to learn anyway. You're ahead of curve. It's not like the engines are going away. As a builder/remodel contractor who repairs all my own tools, you learn very quickly that every major brand is made in China. Some in Taiwan, the better ones in Japan, most in China. You'll find a couple brands made in Europe, they might be better, but typically twice or three times the cost but not twice or three times the quality. Pick your poison. Buy cheap usually means get cheap, buy expensive doesn't always mean quality. Do your research.
When you fix your own tools you learn everything. It took the owner a year and a half before he found me via a mutual friend to work on this. He called every ATV shop in town and the neighboring state, then went to call auto shops and everyone told him no. ATV shops told him to essentially throw it away and buy a new ATV/UTV. That's the disposable world we live in.
Most USA made name brands like Milwaukee, Stihl, Snap On,Harley Davidson,etc.. are now actually partially or completely made in China. Many still think they're made in USA so they'll laugh at you & your Chinese brand chainsaw not realizing that their Stihl was made in China.
I think it's kinda weird how many shops won't work on older vehicles despite being fuel injected. They're actually often easier to work on than newer vehicles.I heard many shops don't have timing lights anymore.
@@michaelbrinks8089 Just a heads up, Milwaukee is 100% Chinese owned (TTI) and just give people the perception of USA with this USA name. Milwaukee failed as a USA business and TTI saved them. Stihl is still a German brand with most of their saws being assembled in the USA with foreign parts mainly because no one will make parts in the US. How much you can claim that's USA made is really not much. Americans can't afford American laborers anymore. Everyone demands higher wages but then complain when stuff costs four times as much, so we just moved to China to get our stuff.
@@sixtyfiveford On Buell motorcycles, the gas tank says "Buell American Motorcycles" where everybody can see it. Under the gas cap it says, "made in Taiwan" lol
Wow that's crazy. I never thought I'd see one of these cars on UA-cam. I used to assemble/repair these my old boss used to import them. They are pretty cool but a lot of them had problems.
That's awesome. Yeah I can see the rest of everything on the brink of just falling apart.
I tip my 🎩 hat to you. I had every confidence, you would get it running. Greetings from Ireland.👍
Thanks!
Love Ginger chomping that water, lol.
Awesome you got it running correctly, neat little side by side for sure.
Thanks man Glad you liked it
I run onto this a LOT where a brick and mortar repair shop won't even look at anything odd, older or obsolete. Sure, gives me work and I'm happy to help out, but it's all about the quick buck with them. I'm like you...I'm always happy to help, but there are times when the timeline will be extended due to parts availability etc. As long as the person needing the help is ok with that, then something can sit here for as long as it takes. Awesome repair! Cheers my Friend! Zip~
People wonder why we toss all well built old power equipment in favor of cheap Chinese protects, because no shops will work on it. I probably under charge for a lot of the work I do but I enjoy it and enjoy helping the owners.
@@sixtyfiveford We're definitely cut from the same cloth. I'm the same.
I like how you are willing to tackle anything. Most would not. What a weird little car!
Thanks Tim
..lol..that's a good one..the brother in law ..only thing i would loan my brother in law is my fist..lol..nobody can work on it you say..just bring it to you..great job on the rebuild..I'm glad you took Ginger for the ride looked like she enjoyed it..hope her ear heals well..she's a character..see you on the next one..Cheers friend zach 🍻🍻🍻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
That's hilarious!
I was thinking the whole time that it was some custom built thing. I didn't realize till I looked it up that its actually a little kit car. They come in a crate and you assemble them. I dig it cause its a 5 speed unlike most typical side by sides. Makes it much more fun to drive.
It is fun to cruise around in but way overpriced for the quality/lack of quality you get. I think they sell new for around $17,000 which is the same ballpark as a high quality name brand UTV. I think they fit their quality better in the 8-9k range new. I'm sure the importers are paying around this and marking them up to the $17k+
Really good job 👏 greetings from Germany
Good video.. Loved you did not overlay any music and kept the work noises.
Nice fix man. Nothing better than getting something weird working again 👍🏼
Very True. Thanks Man.
Ok now that's definitely different 😅😅 You tackle any job so well 👍
Thanks Steve.
Great job and very interesting seeing you work it out! Hope you got paid properly brother.
Thanks Leslie. Yeah, I made it worth my time.
This is too cool, Your the man! Haha Like your canine too, funny stuff. Great video man.
Hey thanks
Brave. Good Job. Hope Ginger heals up quick.
Hey thanks. She got the head wrap off last night and is bouncier than ever.
As a fellow dog lover, I always enjoy the additional doggo video footage!
Thanks!
Good job brother. You made it look easy...lol.
It is not a converted Chinese car. The Oreion Reeper is a production vehicle made in China and assembled here in Corrales New Mexico and yes it is street legal. I have the 4 door version and mine is tagged. Glad to see someone taking the time to tear one down and rebuild the engine. This is the 1st video I've seen where someone takes the initiative to rebuild one, like you said there is no one else so you become that one. Lol. Great video. Knock on wood I have 3000 trouble free miles on mine but I'm also fortunate enough to have a dealer within a couple hours of me I could take mine too if need be but your video has been very beneficial in actually seeing the tear down process. Wish you were closer to me, I'd hit you up in the event I needed engine repair.
China makes these for a few brands that are just labeled for whomever wants to buy them in bulk. Duruxx DRX2 DRX3 is just one of many. They do little more than put the tires, roll cage, put oil/had in and they're done. No it's not a Chinese car per se but every part is pretty much from the Chery QQ.
@@sixtyfiveford yes China does make them for several different brands. Like you said Durrux is one, Rebel is another. In Canada they call it a Discovery but it has a slightly different front end. When I mentioned they were assembled in Corrales New Mexico I was speaking of the Oreion Brand specifically. I really enjoyed the engine rebuild video. Awesome job. Merry Christmas.
Cool video. My 2016 Kawasaki Mule Pro FXT had a Chery 3 cylinder engine. Made plenty of power.
I saw that but it is a little larger than the Chery 372 in this one. This was a 800cc where the Kawasaki was 812(bore or stroke increase?). The engine design itself is a Suzuki from the 90's that they later put in the Geo Metro. However, Suzuki/Geo parts don't all fit do to it now being a Chinese Clone engine.
Great video and rebuild, thank you Moe!
Thanks
nice job i was just like you never seen rangs like that until i worked on a briggs 16hp cast keep it up
The Briggs probably had 3000 hours on it at that point.
Nice work. Hope your pup recovers well.
She's doing well.
cool lil rig , good job . hope yer buddys ear gets well soon!!!!
Thanks. Yeah, she's almost better.
Nice work 👍, Ginger is adorable 👍👍. Hope her ear heals soon, poor thing. 😢
Thanks man. She's doing well and got the head wrap in the video off last night.
These were designed by two guys out in Arizona. They ran a, rent a ride, with jeeps. Maintenance was to much on jeeps so they developed these. The engines, 3 and 4 cylinders, are the very same as John deer uses/used in their gators and such.
Nifty vehicle and a great fix.
Poor ole Ginger, get better soon.
Hey Thanks.
Amazing work
Thank you!
Awesome. Thanks for sharing.
Reminds me of a Geo Tracker....I'd like to have something similar to that vehicle for a 4 season, cheap, easy to work on, fuel efficient, 4wd commuter vehicle.
Great vid!
Hey Thanks
Nice job cool little car
Hey Thanks.
Like the setup for the 4 wheel drive.
I like how you used the mini-stretch wrap. I use it often in my shop. I find it more useful that duct tape.
Absolutely. I find uses for it everywhere.
Wow that thing is very cool
Very cool toy! I have a gator that I wish I could ride on the road legally. It sure is convenient to run up to Napa, or the hardware store when in the middle of working on something. Gingers ears look all better.
They just passed laws allowing them 4-5 years ago in my State.
Add a farm triangle on the back, makes it street legal.
NICE JOB !!!!!!!!! LOVE Your DOG.......
Thank you!
Another great video! Nice slow mo of your dog attacking the water! Made me laugh. Stay well
Thanks Mike
Great Video! Thanks for helping your friend/neighbor! When the oil light came on, then maybe the engine overheated and #3 cylinder would have been the hottest (furthest from water pump) so maybe the heat took the temper out of the #3 rings? Or as you said maybe bad mfg on the metal rings! Liked!! Subbed long ago!
I'm thinking the #3 was the last on the oiling circuit and every time the oil light cam on it was getting starved the most. There's a little squirter that's squirts oil onto the bottom of each piston, so #3 just wasn't getting oil and overheating.
@@sixtyfiveford Yes, good point! I think you are right on target! was that an aluminum block or steel?
@@advancednutritioninc908 Block is steel.
Biggest red flag is that Fram oil filter 🤦. I ran them exclusively for years, until after an oil change on my Silverado. Started it up after the oil and filter change, and only had 15 psi of oil pressure. It had always run at 40 when warm at idle. Pulled the filter off, and found casting defects blocking the passages. Thought it was a fluke, so continued to use them. Then a few months later, the same thing happened again, but on my daughter's car. I'll pay a few bucks more for a Wix, AC Delco, Bosch, or Motorcraft from now on.
I never run Fram on my stuff but do occasionally on customers stuff to save a buck. I will say FRAM is 10x better than some of the quick oil change places filters I've cut open. I only dislike FRAM for the bottom mounted oil bypass hole; they are not the only one to use this style. During cold startup when oil bypasses the filter media it is forced pass all the dirty media pleats and can pull/wash previously caught junk away and straight through your motor. Top mounted bypass like Motorcraft and Napa/Wix is my choice as the oil just goes in and out when cold. That being said every FRAM I've cut open has never looked like any had failed and think they do get picked on a little excessively.
I've been using FRAM for 30 years on everything, they are the most available locally, and never had an issue with them or any vehicle i have run them on. I will say i don't like the Orange FRAM's, the Silver ones are only a couple bucks more, the Tough Guard, and i have cut them open and they have different filter media and a silicone drainback valve, the Extra Guard has a rubber one. The Ultra Synthetic filters are even better, they have a lot more filter media, but i can never find them in stock locally for my vehicles. Lately even the Extra and Tough Guard versions have been harder to get, supply chain issues like everyone else. Anyway, here is a good read on the grade comparisons, i have seen some good UA-cam videos on it as well. focusoilfilter.com/fram-oil-filters-comparison/ I know they get a bad rap, but locally i have two choices, Fram from three stores, or go to an Auto Parts store which is wildly overpriced, they sell FRAM also but $3-4 over the price at the local farm supply stores or Wal-Mart. I have no issues with Napa, Wix, etc.. It's just a lot more money locally for me what i feel is not worth the cost. I pay an average of $7 for a Tough Guard for my vehicle locally, from the Napa or O'Reilly's i have locally their cheapest filter runs $16.
Good video, 👍
Thanks 👍
What a cute little machine.
It really is!
Great video, very fun build. You made it look easy ( like always) with little documentation or help available. Not sure what it cost the customer, but what option did he have. Well done sir 👏.
Thank you very much. This has been quite the video for people coming out of the woodwork. I have people all over the country constantly contacting me to fix this random thing. As there are no resources other than just buying a complete engine and putting it in. Sadly I turn them all down as this wasn't the funnest job ever.
So awesome you were able to fix it. Oreion lists a dealer in tremonton
Owner said he tried for a year and half to get anyone to work on it. Like all these Cheap Chinese budget products(generators, ATVs, etc) parts, other than spark plugs are not available. Dealer simply means they will order one in for you and sell it to you. The best the guy could find was a dealer in Idaho that said they wouldn't even look at the engine and would only swap in a new one for $5000.
Dog is in charge, because he manages the exhaust gasses, and makes the car going again. Owner thinks he has repaired the car, but in reality it was the dog. Very impressive dog, with extraordinary capabilities.
In Arizona, there are communities (retirement, maybe) where golf carts are standard transportation, so this car would be a nice ride there. Obviously it's just local driving. The family car is in the garage or carport when the golf cart is driven.
Wow amazing
Thanks
Nice job. It's a cute ride, though I'd be interested in purchasing the India that looks like a yj jeep! Lol
That would be cool!
I like what you do, I like how you do it, and l like your dog.
Thanks.
The dog is the best part. He thinks he is going to get something till he gets a whif of the exhaust.
Ginger’s the best helperer cos she tells Moe when he’s forgotten something 🤣
you make it look so easy :) I want one heh. Good vid fun times
Thanks Noel, It would be a lot of fun.
Wow. Nice work. I hope you got paid well for that job since you took on quite a responsibility.
Thanks. Of course, gotta keep the dog fed.
I wanted one i think it would be a fun daily driver in my opinion
I did one on a JOYNER T-4 Trooper. I thought it was a 4 cylinder cherry I got from Tooele UT. But the ring gap was bad and had ton holes In the air intake system. But I think I got the parts off ebay. The transmission was a design off a euro escort.
Great job and great video as always. Love the test ride with your buddy. Kudos!
Thanks Phil
cool video man ill bet one could find japan nrp rings as rings thickness are same on metric stuff sorta like old usa engines just source the same bore size may be figure out witch engine chine cloned to make this one
"You'll never remember" best advice ever. Can't tell you how many times in like of that is easy I'll remember that.....nope lol
Pretty interesting little ride
I've played that game with myself so many times and always loose.
Man I remember almost buying one of these brand new about 10 years ago! There were quite a few little dune buggies that had those engines in them too.
You should be glad you didn't. The engine is the highest quality thing on this; with everything else just a breath from breaking.
@@sixtyfiveford I believe it!
John Deere used the same engines in their side by sides.
You might want to consider a lapel mic for more consistent audio. You can use any old Android phone running the ASR app with it to get excellent audio.
Excellent video, reminds me of the old days before the internet, when torque settings were often unavailable, so you get a "feel" for how tight you need to go. Cracking dog too🦴
It gets to the point where feel is generally good enough.
I love how they turned the fwd engine sideways to make it 4wd
It is good that you can take off the oil pan and do it all without removing the motor. Looks like a good little 4x4.
Yeah, pulling the motor would have added hours of labor.
I have a set of dana 30s sitting around. I kinda want to find a lil 5 speed cobalt and try to convert it like this
I’m everybody’s experience
Thanks for your time
Do you do anything to mitigate the honing oil and abrasives getting down on the crankshaft or do you just give it all a bath with parts cleaner after honing?
If these cars are not sold in the US, how did this one make it here? Neat fix. You the man.
They sell it as an ATV and skirt all the airbag/collision standards a car has to abide by.
Fun video. Hate to tell you Moe, but the dog is the real star of the show. ;)
If I tell Ginger she'll get a big head.
Hi, i have a question I hope you can help me, I have a 2015 orion Reeper and I presss white kill switch while it was on, well now it won’t start back on! It was working perfect thought. Do you have any idea how can I restart it, thank you!
Lotsa nay-sayers in the comments, but I’d love to see these imported to the US. It’s got an actual transmission vs the problematic belt system on the majority of the SxS’s. No, it doesn’t have the suspension geometry or the horsepower of the popular sxs’s but it’s probably going to cost about half.. Nice work Moe! Great video as usual
They are imported in the form you see and sell for around $17,000-20,000. The Chery car they are base on are not legal in the US and making it into an offroad toy is a loophole. Honesty they are extremely poorly built for the price. They would likely do better on road vs an offroad SxS competitor.
Giving Mustie1 a run aren’t you !!!! Lol. Fantastic vidjayo - loved the diagnosis and mentioning the added oil to compression check would define rings or other reason for low comp. did you find out the dear John was a sister before or after ordering the parts from China ? Glad Ginger is back to 100%!
John Deere is a pain in the butt to order parts for, especially all the stuff they don't build in house. I did call them and they will only sell a complete engine for I think 5 grand and have no idea when it would come in. Funny thing is I can just buy a complete engine direct from the source for around 3grand. John Deere really knows how to gouge.
I would like to own one of those. In my state if you add turn signals, break lights, head lights, you can get a title to drive it on the road.
They come with all that
Im doing that same thing right now. RIngs look exactly the same....hope you have better luck then I did. I Never got good compression back.
After new rings you still didn't have compression?
@@sixtyfiveford Correct, the rings was definitely worn, so light honing and new rings. Checked compression after and had 80, 65, and 65. I don't know if the cylinders are out of round or what. The ring gap was good so idk. I got to drive it some this weekend and it's down on power but every now and then it seemed to get its power and run really well.
@@petchy9088 2 things. The rings need to seat after a little driving for best compression. Second, I suspect your gauge is off as a 65 or even 80psi engine would be near impossible to start and keep running.
@@sixtyfiveford I thought that too but checked my dirt bike and my harley and its working as it should. before i changed the rings it had 100 60 45 and fired right up like nothing and that was after sitting for 2 yrs.. I heat cycled it ive let it idle and borescoped to see how the cylinder looked and looks fine. I drove it some this past weekend and havnt gotten to check it again so Ill let you know if it went up any.
@@sixtyfiveford Also I appreciate your input.
That engine is used in many lesser known brands of SxSs. Chery is a relatively common engine in South America, parts of Africa and of course Asia.
Good job. I like that vehicle. Not sure if you watch Andrew Camarata, but he just released a video today making his side by side street legal in New York.
I did notice his newest video and watched a few minutes of it.
That daug rules !
