FINALLY, someone does this !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! One of the best songs ever! Caught in the trap, ignore the video ,listen to the SONG! This is a song if you really listen can hear at least 20 different instruments and vocals going on. Very complex arrangement!
I agree, the song gets semi ignored by the video, it is cool but sure detracts from the song for most when they first see it. George deserves more attention from modern audiences.
One of my favorite Harrison songs. I think his widow had a contest asking for people to submit videos to go with this song, and this girl won. It’s a relatively recent video, not original to the song. I think this song is up there with Something, Blow Away and Here Comes the Sun.
I found the video totally distracting from the song and then at the break, that's what they are talking about...the video, and oh yeah, the song. It's really a shame because the song stands on its own merits. I would rather have seen George singing to Olivia.
I always saw it as a first teenage crush... Some free spirit girl you meet one sunny day, she brings out the silly spirit in you and you get that one moment to hold her... Then she runs away. What is my life without your love? Who am I without you by my side? Makes me tear up

Thank you to whoever is responsible for getting this song on the channel. I've been trying forever! One of the best songs ever recorded. It's amazing, the creativity brewing inside George Harrison's head while almost being ignored throughout his Beatles days. Classic song. Classic artist. A beautiful post-Beatles song from 'All Things Must Pass', an album well worth mentioning.
I'm not sure he was "ignored". It is a testament to his ability that he got any songs at all on Beatles albums. Lennon/McCartney were two of the best song writers of the 20th century. And even George admitted that he started writing songs a bit later than they did. His early stuff is ok but not up to par with his later Beatles and solo material. The Beatles had high standards and when George started meeting that standard, he was amazing.
There was a contest to make a video for this song, and Olivia (his widow) and his son Dhani chose this as the winner. And yeah, it's all about love and dancing through the stages of life, including the cemetery.
Love the song and this newer video. The cemetery part gets me every time. The dancer to me can symbolize youthful exuberance being given the opportunity to experience life thanks to the sacrifice of all those 18-year-olds in those military graves. Maybe it's the ghost of a young soldier that follows her into the forest, longing to experience the life and love he never got to experience.
I sent my 13 year old grandson this link. He moved 2,500 miles away a year ago. We were very close. Seeing him grow these past few years I realized I would no longer be as much a part of his life... and he in mine. But this is a new beginning for him, and I wanted him to know how much he had to look forward to, and how much happiness I wish for him. Above all I hope that he finds love in his life, and charishes each moment that passes.
My absolute favorite George Harrison tune. Also has Eric Clapton on rhythm guitar along with some of the best session musicians at the time of the recording.
Eric Clapton is no fool. He knew what his good friend George had in him. No doubt an honour for Eric to play rhythm guitar (!!) on this track. Not to mention for the rest of Derek & The Dominos !
There was no video for the song when this song was a top-ten hit back in 1971. I was just a little kid back then but I remember hearing that hook on the AM pop radio station my parents listened to. That fuzzy riff really came across clearly on small speakers. I don't know when the video was added. But I like it. I also like the fact that I knew the song well before the video was added. So it doesn't matter much to me to get lost in moving pictures of a teenage girl dancing to the song around a street, around a park, around a picnic table, a play set, a cemetery, and a grove of trees where she finds a friend to dance with. It fits the song well. And it's an easy song to get lost in already. Harrison brought out new aspects of the "Wall of Sound" with this song.
George Harrison was a believer in Hindu philosophy, of which one of its teachings says that out of imperfection, perfection can bloom forth. This video beautifully shows that principle.
The dancers were Emma Rubinowitz and Esteban Hernandez, members of the San Francisco Ballet. Apparently there was no choreography, they were just asked to dance as they wanted
The video itself was recently made, over the song track. It’s just a dancer’s interpretation of the music. The song is over 50 years old, George himself died over 20 years ago, and this video made only a few years ago.
Thats just what I thought the first time I saw this. She looks cute dancing in a somewhat awkward way. Actually she was a dancer from the San Francisco Ballet at the time . I like the way the dance makes her look like just an ordinary person dancing from happiness . George made some very original videos . I just read here that the video was made years after George died. His wife and son made the decision to choose this one and it's perfect. They really knew George's mind. I thought he'd made it ! This can be interpreted to a song to a woman, but also a song to God ("what is my life without your love, tell me, who am I, without you, by my side"). Remember, George was always seeking God .
This little gal won a contest by mr Harrison’s song. She won. She is a professional dancer. This is my favorite George Harrison song. Thank you peace ✌️
Per Songfacts: George Harrison wrote this for Billy Preston with sort of a gospel feel. After it ended up being a fast rocker, he decided it wouldn't be right for Preston and released it himself.
I love how Emma Rubinowitz (the Girl) dances in this video. She starts off awkwardly, playing the young girl, and gradually gets better and better as the girl ages. Even when dancing awkwardly, one can tell she is a trained dancer as she still has a certain amount of grace along with full body control. By the time she dances past the cemetery she's in her full ballet mode with the speed she is moving as she twirls. The Boy is danced by Esteban Hernandez, both he and Emma were at the time members of the San Francisco Ballet. The video was recorded in The Presidio of San Francisco.
I seem to remember reading that the dancing 'girl' is actually a young adult (no she's not 13!), she just has a slim build, and is older than the teenage boy.
This is is a masterpiece of production. So layered with so many instruments, all woven together perfectly. I've loved this song since I first heard it at ten years old. Such an uplifting, beautiful song.
Never heard this song before I saw this music video, and it's become a fave of mine... The girl (and guy) is a ballet dancer who choreographed the song's rhythm to her dance routine perfectly, in my opinion... It also captures the sentiments of the song's lyrics about young love. George Harrison was a very gentle soul, and fame and scrutiny heaped on him at such an early age was likely very traumatic... he fell to the vices that most rock stars indulged in - drugs, booze, and women... and he developed a bitter attitude towards certain aspects of life and wasn't a fan of fame & adulation... George once described the hysteria that the Beatles had encountered on tour as annoying cos they couldn't hear themselves play in concert. But he did find love w/ his 2nd wife Olivia and their son Dhani... his dedication to Indian religion and their culture did so much in his lifetime... The last decade of his life were reportedly very happy - he lived quietly w/ Olivia and took up gardening, which gave him an alternative to music.
I’m cool with this video even though George Harrison never saw it; it really emphasizes the essence of this song. And even though Brad & Lex don’t know this, they still understand the heart of this piece. Great video for an absolute incredible song.
This song was released in 1971. George Harrison passed away from cancer in 2001. In 2016 George Harrisons widow, Olivia, and his son Dhani realized there wasn't a video of any kind for this song, so they sent out a world wide request for people to make their own videos and send them in. This young couple are part of a ballet school in San Francisco who simply danced and allowed their emotions to control their actions while listing to the song. Both kids were born more than 25 years after this song was released. But they won! So this is now the official video for "What is Life?"! Amazing how the Beatles (as a group and as individuals) are still effecting young kids still to this day!
The Song is clearly AWESOME, but I have to give a SHOUT OUT to the DANCERS! The YOUNG WOMAN is dancing with the type of JOY everyone should feel when they listen to any song by any of the Beatles!!
This is my ALL TIME favorite childhood song! There was never an original video for this song. George's wife Olivia held a video contest a few years back for this song and yellow-girl-dancing was the winning selection :-)
The interesting thing about George is that he was a very spiritual person and he said once that most of his songs weren't typical love songs, they were love songs to diety.
George's wife and son selected Brandon Moore of Oakland as the winner of a contest to make a video for this 1970 song. Brandon chose Emma Rubinowitz & Esteban Hernandez of the San Francisco Ballet to film in the San Francisco Presidio.
George evolved as a composer as the Beatles evolved and by the time the group ended he was Lennon & McCartney's equal. His solo album, All Things Must Pass, is as good as any album released and it sold really well. The Beatles took us on a journey and that journey continued with solo albums by all 4.
I think her dancing around all those military graves says more than the circle of life! Lex is right! It's suggesting to the listener/viewer that life is much more than dying and war. It is for happiness and celebration. Love to you two!
George was dubbed the "spiritual Beatle" so that's what he became. Everybody knows Johnny Cash is "The Man In Black" he declared it in the song and that's what he became. A must hear.
George was always my favorite Beatle from day one. So talented. The double album "Concert for Bangladesh" featuring a handful of other very accomplished artists is amazing. Was fortunate enough to see the movie when it came out.
Great song off his greatest solo album, the first 2 records of that 3 LP set are absolute firs, George had tons of songs waiting to go after the Beatles broke up and this is one of many great ones. Also Try Beware of Darkness, Isn't it a Pity and the Art of Dying, all classic tunes. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
You should hear "Give me love". It's my favorite of Harrisons solo work. The descending piano line in the song is just so beautiful. You have to be dead not to feel that song and it's got a great message.
The Video for this song was created in the 21st century. It was the result of a contest in a box set. The winner becoming the official video was created by two ballet dancers from San Francisco dancing at the presidio, a San Francisco Park that includes a Veteran's cemetery.
If you listen carefully you realize it’s a love song to all the people in your life that make it worth it. “Who am I? Without you by my side” sort of shows that George is talking about friends/family/lovers. Anyone in your life who only requires love from you and that is all. “If it’s all love that you need, then I’ll try my best to make everything succeed” once you see that it kind of brings a tear to your eye as this sentiment is so relatable. Life is sharing love with the ones who reciprocate such a feeling. Everything else is just a filler.
The video seems to depict a person dancing through life stages, oddly, just like how we go through life. Sort of wobbly and full of errors but seemingly in a direction. Also, if you ever want to try to interpret Harrison lyrics from his 1970-72 period -- they almost always are heavily influenced by his broad sense of spirituality, that governs his worldview. A few of his Beatle recordings are also driven by that influence, such as Within You Without You from Sgt. Pepper. Anyway, this is a great fun song that I don't think I've seen on any reaction channel before, so Congratulations!!
I knew this song when I was a kid and always thought it was about God. So when I saw this video decades later that’s what o saw here too. Childhood. Silliness. Innocence. Cemetery - loss. Finding God. Everyone has their own interpretations but this is mine. Love the song and I think the video done decades later is just perfect.
Probably my favorite George Harrison song. Personally I think the video adds to the song, NOT detract from it. This song reminds me so much of my childhood. It makes me happy and sad all at the same time.

Probably my favorite George Harrison song. Personally I think the video adds to the song, NOT detract from it. This song reminds me so much of my childhood. It makes me happy and sad all at the same time.
That whole album is awesome. A real classic!
George was Hare Krishna. This song can be seen as both an ode to a Hindu God and as a secular love song…as many of his songs could.
Loved this double album!
Love the drums.....Was usually Ringo and sometimes a studio musician named Jim Keltner played along with him to keep Ringo on beat....
Such a brilliant and beautiful song. George is arguably the Greatest Beatle. ❤👍🤘
Great pick
thanks! just added to my playlist.
Real music. Thank you! George is my go to Beatle.
So amazing how great all the Beatles were solo…
I absolutely love the video that brings the song to life in my opinion. Mesmerizing.
