    Nice summary! Edgar Payne's book has been really helpful. It's funny how when we're young we are enthralled by the "detail" and complexity of things, but as you age you appreciate concise, distilled, potent work. I saw a video where a professor explained: people think poetry is using big fancy words to fluff language, but it's really about distilling language down to it's most essential and potent form. I think that applies to art.

    Huge help thank you so much. I also want to thank you for how you teach in your videos. I made the mistake of using the internet for cheap tips and quick solutions to my problems in art and I believe I fell behind because of that. I appreciate you actually teaching in your videos and encouraging us to learn on our own as well.

    Great video. I myself haven’t studied compositions academically or anything like that, only ever by feel, but do you think compositions could be different from the common ones and still be interesting? Because I often get obsessed with shapes that really scratch that itch in my head, even though nobody else seem to be doing it the same way

    • @JordanGrimmer
      @JordanGrimmer  8 місяців тому

      Definitely, composition is one of those things that doesn't always abide to strict rules, sometimes something really surprising and weird can work. That's why it's important to not just stick to some of the rules I set out in this video, sometimes symmetry, for example, does create good composition. Even in Edgar's book he mentions central compositions and ignores the asymmetrical stuff I mentioned here. It's really all about feeling what works and not sticking to strict patterns all the time.

    As a beginner, I struggle to make 2d shapes of value look like 3d objects. It is as if silhouettes work as a composition, but they seem flat. Any exercises you (or anyone better than me) could recommend to practice it?
