We have to take one very important thing into consideration when watching this video.... it is 2021.
Shenmue was something to experience when it was released and there was nothing else was llike it at the time.
While i do appreciate the honesty in the video... it always feels like the impact of what Shenmue was gets lost in history.
Simply put as a total fan of both games... Shenmue is Miyagi Do Karate and Yakuza is Cobra Kai

I agree as a huge fan of both series, most retrospectives of Shenmue are done by youngsters did not play Shenmue at launch and don’t acknowledge was a gigantic leap fwd Shenmue was in videogame design.
Even Rockstar said Shenmue influenced GTA. Shenmue 1 was the bleeding edge of videogame technology and game design in 2000, and whilst it was a financial flop and it’s slow pace only appealed to a niche audience, Shenmue’s impact and influence on the medium is far greater than Yakuza’s.

More like Shenmue is Bruce Lee while Yakuza is Jackie-chan, at least that's how I see it.

Easily the best neutral take video on both games of all time.
It doesn't matter which one is better, what really matters the most is if you give each one a chance, Thank you!

What you should have compare with was Original Yakuza on PS2. Zero is way too refined and it is the best that the series can offer. After shenmue's failiure making ryu ga gotoku on PS2 was a risk for SEGA. But they were recognized as successful around Yakuza 4 and 5.

I left a like. Thank you for making this. I grew up with Shenmue (yet to play Yakuza but I am eager from all I've heard in recent years... kinda a sleeper hit, huh?) and I do love it. Probably in a way that's a little biased, as the experience of just booting up the Dreamcast is a nostalgic feeling. You are right, it is a detective time management game. And then it's part martial arts movie turned simulator, which feels like a new (at the time) take on the 3D action rpg.
But let me tell you why I'm glad you made this video.
Shenmue, as special and dear to me as it is, I can't articulate what's special about it. Everything about the game felt engaging and magical when I was an adolescent, on a feverish quest to collect all the Sonic capsules before leaving Dobuita forever... And as I try my best to detail all those special moments to a zoomer or one of my generation who missed out on it, it's hard to "sell" them on the experience. Partly due to how dated the game is, how fast and gratifying things have come to be in our general lives. It's difficult to convince someone to slow down and absorb it.
To each their own, of course. I don't recommend everyone in the world play it. The criticisms that have been repeated for the past 21 years are founded and fair.
Despite all that, Shenmue has been an unending source of inspiration for me and I hope that even after all this time, even someone who has never played it to this day can find and appreciate a piece of that same magic as I did as a youngster.
Pro-tip to new players: You have to try and beat the 80-man Battle challenge!

Shenmue 3 was create as if it was released in 2003... As yu Sazuki mentioned that game was made for the fans... He isn't interested in making money...
However he did mention that shenmue 4 will be more like modern game... While it keep the shenmue spirit in it....

honestly super eye patch video on 3 wasn't very on point since it got a few response videos and he also skipped around few things just so he can talk about his "ending". I reccomend bitsocket's video on 3 and you should make your own judgment instead of relying on others opinions and shaming the yu suzuki for no good reasons, since from the video you seems to get that shenmue is a different beast from popular games like yakuza

I agree about not creating opinions based on other people's opinions but on your own.
...with that said, as someone that played Shenmue3, it was really rough. And the "filler" accusation is justified. If there's one thing that SEW said correctly in his video, is that no progress was made in the story aspect.
Like, Yu Suzuki said in presentations before how he plans for the story to progress, and having that information allows us to take this game, put into the timeline that the man himself gave us, and see that nothing happened in Shenmue3.

    • @lupinthenerd439
      @lupinthenerd439 Рік тому

@@Rihcterwilker besides that i think shenmue is much more than the story (yes i found the boring and mondaine entertaining in these games), it kinda does move fowards the story: we discover the origin of the mirrors, a new villain is thrown in the mix and the relationship with shenhua is developed if you talk to her in Bayou village at night before you go to bed. I just asume does aspects aren't what most players look into

    • @Rihcterwilker
      @Rihcterwilker Рік тому +1

@@lupinthenerd439 ok. I won't try to make you change your opinion or anything, i just think this game failed delivering a meaningful development on the story side.
I'm also the kind of guy that prefers life simulation experimental games. Majora Mask, Harvest Moon, the sims, any kind of game that has this recreation of real life sensibilities appeal to me. So did shenmue 1 & 2, that i think are incredible games.
That said, i think shenmue 3 is a good game, but flawed as a piece of media that was expected do deliver something for 20 years, and then it came out and the "real" story had no progress beyond the throwaway scenarios you mentioned. The grind is just too much to not get any meaningful reward after the time invested. Nothing in the revenge aspect beyond "we have to keep going, i'm still too weak".
I want Shenmue 4 to happen, but i think we'll never see the end of the saga in game form.

Yakuza Like A Dragon is the 7th mainline title. Ryo Ga Gotoku translates to Like A Dragon in English and is the name thr series goes by in Japan. Think of how Capcom added Biohazard to the name of Resident Evil 7, where in Japan Biohazard is the name RE goes by.

  • @ryanparr868

Shenmue undoubtedly had a big impact on where games would head towards, and probably was a decade too early to implement the kinds of ambition it had (so it appeared clunky and awkward, and though it looks impressive for when it came out, it was more of a passion project than one that pandered to the average consumer.) I consider Shenmue a game designed by someone that was far too introverted for the majority of people, but also lacked self-awareness about how people might perceive it, and yet I have a love-hate relationship with the series.
Though I preordered Shenmue 3 I never really "got into" it until about a year after it's release, and when I got past the Bailao (sp? It's been a while) village I started to spend more time exploring the city and came to appreciate it more. The same production hell lurched into the story development that plagued the previous games and it never seemed to fulfill what I expected of it, and it felt forced.
I could never really tell if the game intentionally tries hard to be a 1980s adaption of what movies were like during that time period, or if it was how Yu Suzuki remembers the 1980s, though I still feel as though I have a better understanding of the time period in question, and in a strange way it seems like an authentic attempt at trying to recreate a time and place that seems slightly believable (such as if you took a bunch of snapshots from a time period that accurately tried to recreate a moment in time.)
Though I ultimately wasn't impressed, I wanted to be, and to some extent, it seemed less forced and more like a vacation in an Asian country, in which I didn't have to constantly think I was going to be deported if I didn't look closely at the time.
Yakuza Zero was very impressive and developed the story in a more convincing way, and didn't seem as autistic (or awkwardly introverted which I suspect Yu Suzuki is) as Shenmue tends to seem. The game attempted to give a much more dynamic characterization to established characters which was a decent introduction to the series for those like myself that tended to completely ignore the series until Zero came out (and though I've been interested in the rest of the series, I felt compelled by the length of Zero to not bother with it.)
Shenmue differentiated itself by it's pacing and more realistic portrayal of life the setting is based on, even if it's still a hammy 1980s-inspired setting. The story in Yakuza was interesting enough without entirely overstaying the tolerance for story development, and yet it seemed to allow exploration while giving some levity to explore side curiosities (such as the arcade.)
Whether comparisons are made between the series is due to the setting being a retro-Japan when Sega was still dominating the arcades (and just before Japan had their own economic crash which might be a reflection on where Sega viewed its situation over the years) It's perhaps a time period that still implores the audience to want to relate to the backstory of the characters, knowing that such a world now only exists in video games.
A lot of what the Yakuza series seems to be inspired from is where Rockstar games have been going, and technology has come a long way with the dialogue sequences. The game still look like typical console games, and sometimes the PC adaptations very different with some updates (games like Witcher 3 or Red Dead Redemption 2 are surprisingly engrossing, almost to the point of burn out with the content.) Shenmue often feels forced to continue at times, as the character dynamic is a bit too static with the protagonist. Games like Yakuza kind of invite the player to choose what to do, which makes it easier at times, so Shenmue is kind of "on rails."
