That underpainting was so good..and when you started to introduce the violet...that was..magic..Love it...Thanks Mrs Margolis you always deliver the best..no wander you are the best teacher of the Web..gracias
Hi Karen, thank you very much for your video! The black and white was a good lesson for me. You made it look so easy to get a great landscape. Your explanations as you go are so valuable to me. I can’t wait to get my pastels out and start practicing!
Thank you for this demonstration. It has opened up a new way of looking at the underpainting using not just Art Graf but other materials such as Derwent Inktense Blocks with pastels. Love It!
That is really interesting... not unlike the landscape here in N Kent, UK. Some of your marks look astounding at first (that bright pink reflection in the water) and then as you complete the piece it all comes together and makes sense. I need to be more sensitive to my marks, and more courageous.
Beautiful. Now look at things differently 😀, point of interest, sky drawing to water, water echoing sky. 😁 thank you for your sharing your work process extremely helpful ❤❤
I love to watch you Karen but must mention the added entertainment value of the doggie. I love the noises she makes and think I also detected a cat meow too. Something tells me you chat to them whilst you paint away and they are wondering why they aren’t getting their usual attention. So sweet and makes for very happy viewing I must say!
The underpainting you did at the beginning of the video was so interesting! What did you end up doing with it, is there a photo of the final painting you could show us? Thank you for sharing so much with us!!
Thank you so much. I think your videos are awesome!~ and I enjoy the cat and dog in your studio too and your videographer as well! I didn't know what Notan means so I googled it and found this: "In Japanese, Notan means “dark/light”. The term refers to the harmony that results from the arrangement of dark and light spaces within the composition of the painting. This arrangement reflects the quantity of reflected light, or the massing of varied value tones, to create a design." May I ask if you did this with Gouache and water or Gouache and alcohol if it would result the same way using Uart 400 paper? Do you ever use Gouache as underpainting? if so would you make a video on that sometime and include on what paper you can use and how do you apply it? I appreciate your talents and sharing very much! ~Joy
Wonderful demo! When you're using the index cards as thumbnail color studies, does it help if the card is the same color as the paper you plan to use for the painting?
Dear madam, thank you for sharing with us your knowledge of Notan. One question is not clear to me, and I have asked it on various sites, but so far I have not received a specific answer. Can you help me ... is there any rule in notan studies that determines the relationship between dark and light? Is it 50:50, or is it darker, or is it more light? Or can it not be determined by some rule, but each artist determines this relation to his own feeling? What is the true truth?
Karen, I hate to buy more and more supplies not knowing if I will like them. WHat could I use instead of ink block? Would charcoal and water work or would it muddy up pastels? How about tempera, watercolor, watered down acrylic or india ink and water.. give me some ideas. Thanks
I just saw your question! any medium will work. I have not tired oil pastels. The important thing is that the underpainting medium needs to be thin so it doesn't clog the tooth of the paper.

So nice. Love the darker, wet mood.
Thanks for this wonderful demo. Learned a lot. You are so talented!
You are so welcome! Thank you!
You were done but the dog was just getting started!😂
I always learn something from you, no matter how many of your video I watch! Thanks...it's wonderful.

Thanks for watching Linda!
I wish you showed the dog at the end. He sounds cute! I loved the lesson and I think I'll try it.
Thanks for watching! I didn't even know she was there until I stopped! She snuck in while I was painting!

I see that you have Edgar Payne's book on display. Very good. He is one of my favorites. I am partway through the book too.
So good! You are such an inspiration to me
so pretty! Would this work with oil pastels? Thanks so much.
So good and so useful. Thank you very much.👍🏼🙏🏼❤️😎
Thanks for watching!

Love your work. The tutorials are excellent. You're the best
That was great. So, When are you doing a workshop?
Wonderful demo!

That looked surprisingly quick and easy for getting a fine result, Karen -
but, hmmm... I wonder, why alcohol with the inktense?
Hello. Love your videos. Did you stop using the foam insulation to rub in the underpainting?
Beautiful
Thank you! I appreciate you watching!
