E ink phone Android app showcase | Hisense A9 review

- Stop doomscrolling. Great for reading/text, terrible for scrolling and video.
A similar device is the Hisense Hireader Pro.
I prefer the A9 over the Boox Palma and Bigme Hibreak.
The best e ink phone in my opinion.
The price of this phone is inflated right now, they were really affordable when I bought it at release.
Possibly a gateway to digital minimalism, I use it because it’s really easy on the eyes.

I want this so bad ... I'm so distracted by my phone during work, but I can't put it away because I need it for my work. I feel like this would solve this issue.
This phone will stop you from scrolling and watching videos because they are not good on eink! Productive stuff like reading and messaging work great though.
The refresh rate is a bit slow for my liking but I don't think it's a change one could not adjust to
Do you use this as your daily phone? I'm kinda wanting to make the switch but might go for the A5 pro (for NFC). My only concern is the Google thing, so are you not able to use Google apps/log in to app with a google account? Appreciate any help, great video 👌
I used to use it as a daily phone, but put the sim back into my iPhone since reception wasn't good enough in stores. But I still use it heavily every day over WiFi.
I used a wallet style case to hold credit cards at the time so nfc didn't matter to me me. I’ve never used an a5.
I have the non Google play version. Plenty of workarounds, usually involving the mobile website version instead of app version. I log into Gmail via Microsoft Outlook/edge for example. I use UA-cam logged in via a browser. Etc
I really wish companies start investing on somehow combining regular LCD/OLED screens with e-ink, so you get seriously low power screens and safe reading experience out of it while still having the option of backlit color screen when the regular screen is turned on
I haven't personally used one, but maybe look into the dual screen Hisense A6L
Great video! I ask for more from everyday use.
Does the phone receive software updates? When did the latest one come out?
What sort of everyday use video do you want? Maybe the videos on my shorts page might help, I have app specific videos.
Also, I think Hisense stopped support for this phone already, i think the last software update I received was over a year ago. It’s stuck on Android 11, though people are working on LineageOS for it for android 15. Check out r/eink for more info.
@@eink-reviews Are you planning to install LineageOS?
@@marcin_79 nope, I’m satisfied with the features of this device as is.
Hi, may i ask if this alllows esims and/or wifi calling? Thanks for posting
A9 supports neither. China phones in general support neither esim nor WiFi calling. I have a video on using mint mobile with the a9 on my channel

Can you use Google pay and make payments with tap? My transit card is on my google pay and I use it to tap on and off and I was wondering if that functionality is still there
No, this doesn’t have nfc. I use a wallet case instead.
thank you so much for this video! do you think the tumblr app would be usable in this phone 😳
I don’t see a reason why it wouldn’t work, scrolling might not be great though.
Mobile tumblr website via einkbro browser works great too.
How's the cell service for you? It's the one thing stopping me from getting one right now :(
Assuming you are in USA, the Hisense A9 has some T-Mobile reception. It supports a SINGLE 4G LTE Band, Band 41. It lacks the long range/building penetrating bands of iPhone XR and later, so you won't get reception inside thick walled buildings like stores. But at home and outdoors is fine. I ultimately put my Mint Mobile sim back in my iPhone and only use the A9 over WiFi.
Can it run "MitID" app? It's a danish app used to access everything government, even banking and so forth.
It wouldn’t open for me, I don’t have the google play version of the A9 though. Banking and security sensitive apps typically require google services.
@@eink-reviews thank you so much for the quick response!
@@bjornenbjorn978 In general, if the app version doesn't work the mobile website will work instead.
Howmay days this phone offer in terms of battery performance after full charge?
Several days I’d say. By comparison, my iPhone 8 on 74% battery health lasts half a day. Even if my eink phone is at 20% I still have hours of life left.
If you just used it for reading how long would it last?
@@Ben-io2vo Just for reading, probably a week or 2. My battery drain app says most of my battery goes to playing UA-cam audio in the background.
But at that point, it would be more cost efficient to get a dedicated ereader like a Kindle for just reading.
How are you using volume button for scrolling ?
The apps implement it as a feature. So using a web browser with this feature is usually the best option. EinkBro browser implements it and is great. Kindle app, koreader, infinity, etc also have this feature. Though Reddit website via einkbro works great too.
@@eink-reviewsthanks for replying, I searched in the google play couldn’t find einkbro at all, m in UK, could be because of that, any other browser or way to do? Because I think it can really make a difference
@@azeemawan3252einkbro is available on the fdroid store and from the einkbro GitHub page.

Does this work with Android Auto?
According to a search on the r/eink subreddit, it works if you root it or use LineageOS.
I got mine before root was available, and it doesn’t work on that version. I haven’t rooted mine yet.
Any gesture navigation?
Don’t see it anywhere, only 3 button navigation.
What version of android is this running ?
Android 11, but can be flashed with LineageOS for Android 14.
Taxi hailing apps? Maps?
You can set your Android phone to a grayscale mode in the accessibility settings, unfortunately Google Maps navigation becomes completely unusable - due to the blue color highlighting your path being indistinguishable from all the other paths.
I didn't root it for Google Play so I don't know. Google Play Services is required for stuff like Uber/Lyft/Google Maps. Waze works though, and I hear that the mobile website versions work too. You can try asking in the r/eink subreddit or the XDA thread on the Hisense A9 root.
Hey Thanks for the great video... Can you do and use every Google app without any issue or glitch... For me its important that every Google app works as on an normal screen phone.... Thanks in advance
I have the non google version. But people say google apps work fine if you root or flash LineageOS for android 14.
Other devices also have native google play. The screen alone doesn’t limit it.
And there’s tons of workarounds, like using a browser for UA-cam, Outlook for Gmail, etc
Does this work with boost mobile
It might. You can search the r/eink subreddit for more info. It works on T-Mobile based carriers. I personally use Mint Mobile. Notably Google Fi doesn’t work but they are special.
Isn't this the A9 Pro?
The a9 pro is not a real device, it's a term invented by goodereader, who runs a certain website that pretends to be an official Hisense website. It's just referring to the 8 GB/256 GB model.
