I've been interested in E-Ink for so long and yesterday watched your video about the kindle tablet and surprisingly the next day this one, the phone would definitely help people that want to detox themselves from screen time as you said. Additionally, I'm truly amazed by the refresh rate of this phone; from using Arduino e-ink displays be relatively slow and then this one's gives me hope we may one day have quick and efficient e-ink displays that are even better than traditional lcd displays or that can replace different applications to extend their battery life such as bike's gps, watches and well, phones that may need to refresh very quickly and use less battery. Thank you so much for making these videos, they are very interesting and informative. ❤
What would have been a nice thing to try with this phone is if you connected it to android studio and done a screen share, to see what parts of the OS appear in color, or black and white
E-ink would be cool as a secondary display on the back of a phone or a folding phone. Would make it super easy to find your phone in the dimly link situations and get important information as a glance - date/time, notifications, etc.
GAAAAAAHHH!!! I just can't get away from that damn Laifen brand! Very interested in this actually. I don't game or play videos on my smartphone really...bit of browsing, listening to podcasts, Twitter etc. An e-ink screen would get me into ebooks without having to have a separate device at an extra cost. Will definitely check this out. There are some colour e-ink tablets out there so maybe if that tech improves we could see that on a phone next?
It would be a good phone for kids to make the phone less appealing to sit and scroll on. I honestly don't think kids should have phones until they are in their later teens but I don't have to worry about that for a while.
Hisense also has an E-ink colour smartphone on the market, called the A7 iirc. I'm hoping to see more cell phone manufacturers come out with their own E-ink screens instead of only Hisense, but seeing as how the E-ink company itself is so stingy with their licensing, and is straight-up Disney predatory about their patents, I don't see that happening any time soon. Hisense is gonna be the go-to for E-ink smartphone screens for the foreseeable future, it seems, which is unfortunate since their quality is subpar and their smartphones don't like to play nice with Western data networks.
I really love the idea but I don't think I would enjoy losing color on my smartphone. I love the benefits of E-ink, I only wish that color could be applied somehow. Once that is accomplished I would probably switch over. Awesome review!
Hisense’s A series offers models with color e-ink screens, typically known as the A5/A7/A9 CC. However, aside from the clarity being considered 10 times less than the non-CC models (a necessary trade-off, as you need to divide the total number of available pixels on the screen by three to accommodate the tri-color filters), the colors are also quite dull, resembling the pseudo-color screens of the last century.
I work in a business with field technicians that need mobile devices to complete work orders. If the frame were more durable, this would be an absolute game changer. Easy to read and complete work orders and better battery life.
Actually this is kinda perfect for a secondary phone where i want the battery to last 3 to 4 days. Maybe a compact phone with e ink display is the right way to go
It's been a long time since I watched Jerry's video. He has a kid now. Still I enjoy his narration I felt like he is more poetic than before. "Just like a little lego" can not forget this line.
My first phone was a Moto F3c with e-ink segmented display with 2 rows for text with 6 characters on the top row and 7 characters on the bottom row. To make a smartphone less addicting, removing social media applications goes a long way. No need to compromise on the display for the rest of the functions.
I bought my phone 5 months ago, but I am thinking about ditching it for this thing. Beautiful idea: I'm sick of this dopamine dispenser, but I still need a smartphone at hand. This seems great.
I would absolutely love to have e-Ink smartphone, but what hurts it the most is not the screen, its the UI. As long as the UI is centered around swipe, drag and scroll, it will be a disaster to use with any e-Ink display. If, however, they'd manage to rework the interface and make interactions less dependent on gestures and more of a page-to-page experience, that would be a completely different story.
I remember some years ago there was a normal phone that had e-ink on the back. The idea was that you could display info on there all the time without using any power like a map or shopping list.
I've been using my Samsung Z Fold 3 for a few years now and my first reaction when you showed this off was "Holy shit that's a cool phone." I love the minimalism of it, and I'd love to see a deeper dive into it's features.

E-ink would be cool as a secondary display on the back of a phone or a folding phone. Would make it super easy to find your phone in the dimly link situations and get important information as a glance - date/time, notifications, etc.
I think E ink is trying to go back to the past in the Nokia era with polyphonic ringtones
GAAAAAAHHH!!! I just can't get away from that damn Laifen brand! First iJustine does a spot for their discount Dyson Supersonic hairdryer, then Quinn, Linus AND NOW YOU do an ad for their toothbrush which has Apple-like packaging and a charger one pin short of being MagSafe! They just came out of nowhere!
This video was uploaded 26 seconds ago but I can tell you right now it's amazing. Great video as always Jerry.
yess
Hisense is gonna be the go-to for E-ink smartphone screens for the foreseeable future, it seems, which is unfortunate since their quality is subpar and their smartphones don't like to play nice with Western data networks.
ahahahahahaha
I wasn't sure about anything coming into this video except that it scratches at a level 6 with deeper grooves at a level 7.
Your drawing ability is getting better and better from phone to phone 😍👍
I’m sick and tired of this toothbrush.
I think a longer period of usage review is more informative than destroying the phone at the end.
Plus more respectful
This channel is about testing phone resistance, he's not interested on normal reviews
I can’t grasp enough how cool this concept is. Sucks it can’t go that far. Imagine E-Ink gaming! That’d probably start a fire. Lit amirte? 💯💪
depending on the mode you put the a9 in, you can get very good motion out of it. it'll be a bit dim/faded. But it is responsive.
If inc display could be put on top of regular one so that it could be used when you don't need anything fancy would be great addition
Or the other way around. A transparent display on top of an e-ink display would be excellent.
0:54 “I know Elon is about to buy 100 of these” well I know now what toothbrush I don’t want.
This blow my mind I see much potentially with this type of technology thank you Jerry your the best one request keep those rig videos coming
1:25 I can imagine atleast 1 person in world will think phone has some sort of sticker on it and try to rip it off. Ruining the device
I work in a business with field technicians that need mobile devices to complete work orders. If the frame were more durable, this would be an absolute game changer. Easy to read and complete work orders and better battery life.
Just slap a case on there and it's probably durable enough, no?
get a cover bruh. Is it that difficult? And install a protective glass
@8:35 "when Apple invents it" 🤣😂🤣😂
I love the idea of an E-ink phone. I don't do a lot of video on my phone, and having a screen I can actually see outside is a nice plus.
the camera quality is not bad at all. very nice.
It's definitely bad
@@notquiteordinary thats because youre using your iphone 15 pro ultra max 6g wifi 10. youre biased to that shit.
@@iDiOt5 no, it's just bad.
@@notquiteordinary ok.
Actually this is kinda perfect for a secondary phone where i want the battery to last 3 to 4 days.
Maybe a compact phone with e ink display is the right way to go
I'm here for the depper grooves 😂
It's been a long time since I watched Jerry's video. He has a kid now. Still I enjoy his narration I felt like he is more poetic than before. "Just like a little lego" can not forget this line.
This tech would make awesome dynamic pictures on walls!

Very interesting. I've been waiting for about a decade for proper e-ink products and this definitely is one.
That's the only phone that can have an always-on-display without compromising battery life.
Honestly, I'm quite tempted to get this as a secondary phone
Llama Llama Red Pajama is one of my kid’s favorite books right now, too. Big hug now!
The fact you can read the screen while it’s in chards is so impressive.
My first phone was a Moto F3c with e-ink segmented display with 2 rows for text with 6 characters on the top row and 7 characters on the bottom row.
To make a smartphone less addicting, removing social media applications goes a long way. No need to compromise on the display for the rest of the functions.
You pricked my interest in minimalist E phones. My question is
How much are they?🤗💚
THIS IS WHAT I'VE WANTED sice forever
Man, it was really painful, but really interesting to watch!
Thank you!
I love these eink phones and wish to see more of them to fight social media addiction.
"Reasonably priced toothbrush heads" Doesn't say price so you know its not 🤣
Yup... Expensive for what they are and the amount, just checked 😂
"Would you rock an e-ink smartphone when Apple invents it?"
Hahahhaha! 😄 So many would!
I’ve actually have been wanting to cut back on my phone usage and if this thing has a built in light for the screen I’m sold
I hope to see more of these displays. If the phone was cheap enough i would buy one just to use as a display for a clock or google information .
I use an e-ink Android device minus the cellular transmitter as a journal / note-taking device - I love it.
Love things like this. Art and Technology.
thank you for this, i feel much at ease handling my eink
I'd absolutely love to see a color e-ink phone. The new color screens they have liok great and would be the final step in the e-ink phone category.
This is the coolest tech innovation in a while. This would go fantastic on a smart watch
Thahah, " when apple invents it " Very deliberate choice of words there XD
This is exactly what I've been looking for. Some digital screen that does not hurt my eyes!
Part of me wants the bangin red magic phone, part of me wants the healthier e-ink phone.
I remember some years ago there was a normal phone that had e-ink on the back. The idea was that you could display info on there all the time without using any power like a map or shopping list.
Love your videos. Greetings from rural japan!
That sharp, flat looking black/white UI gives me Windows 3.11 vibes!
I’d definitely buy one. E ink makes reading amazing.
I've been using my Samsung Z Fold 3 for a few years now and my first reaction when you showed this off was "Holy shit that's a cool phone." I love the minimalism of it, and I'd love to see a deeper dive into it's features.
