Hosing down an old bike like this is sacrilege. Don't let water go down the seat tube or into the head tube. It stays there for years and rusts out the frame. Then it's ruined. Get a spray bottle of weak dish soap mixture and gently WIPE it down. If you really want to preserve it, spray it down with a few coats of nano-coating for car finishes. Works wonders, waterproofs the whole bike.

That's a bit dramatic, there's no problem if you're careful and dry it well. I try not to use chemicals with cleaning, just natural stuff.
