Israel’s Role in Sabra and Shatila

  • After a horrific attack on an Israeli family by a Lebanese teenager working with the Palestine Liberation Front (a faction of the PLO) in 1979, Israel looked for an ally to help create a secure buffer zone between Israel and Lebanon.
However, working with the President-elect of Lebanon, Bashir Gemayel, proved to have deadly consequences. His paramilitary group, the Phalangists massacred between 800 and 2,000 people in two Palestinian refugee camps called Sabra and Shatila.
With the world in an uproar over the horrific news of this event, all fingers pointed blame towards Israel. Although the IDF entered Lebanon to stop the PLO’s terror, Israel accepted responsibility for the part they played in the dark story of Sabra and Shatila.

G’day from a Lebanese born Australian. During the Israeli occupation my in-laws neighbours were travelling through Bhamdoun and were stopped and detained by a Phalange checkpoint.
They being Druze were going to be slaughtered along with approximately 10 others.
Along came an Israeli patrol, the Israeli officer asked the Phalange what was going on and the response with laughter was we have some Bulls to slaughter that being their nickname for Druze people.
The Israeli officer was enraged and slapped the Phalnge leader and screamed, I am a Bull as well do you want to slaughter me as well.
Both sides drew weapons and all the civilians were released and it was told to all.

So not a bad video but a few corrections:
    1) IDF has admitted that their soldiers close to Shatilla and Sabra not only knew about the massacre, but some were pushing the phalangists to go back and commit more massacres. They did not report it up the chain as was IDF Protocol.
    2) Begin, Sharon, and Eitan (aka Raful as he was more commonly known) were all aware of what was going on. Phalangists primary contact was Sharon so we can't really say he wasn't involved.
    3) The inquiry into the massacre was limited in scope, and even they found errors on the IDF Part
    4) I speak as someone who has intimate knowledge in this affair, in times of War the unspeakable happens but we need to admit mistakes and not whitewash things. Those responsible should be held to account and just because they are "Elitest" doesn't mean they should avoid prosecution.

Lokhman Slim and Monika Borgman's Massaker, based on 90 hours of interviews with the LF soldiers who participated in the massacre, gives the participants' memories of how they were drawn into the militia, trained with the Israeli army and unleashed on the camps to take revenge for the murder of Bashir Gemayel. The motivations are varied, from blaming beatings from their fathers in childhood, the effects of the brutalization of war, obedience to one's leaders, a belief that the camp women would breed future terrorists, and the idea three quarters of the residents were terrorists. Others spoke of their violence without traces of repentance.[

Asking. It is great and all that the Sabra and Shatila massacre is acknowledged and treated as civilized as it should be, but something needs to be asked. What have the Israeli done to compensate the victims and living survivors of the Massacre? Or is that Lebanon's problem? You can't really expect pulling down Sharon as some kind of a moral victory when the victims is still left behind, only surviving with the consequences of the IDF's actions.
Again, what has been done more than just sacking the defense minister and few other generals? Because if that is the case, then it'll just be a pat in the back for the moral argument of Israeli awareness of this tragic chapter.

    • @GhassanB

Nothing has been done. In fact, to say the government failed to hold the perpetrators accountable is an understatement, on the contrary, Israel is proud the actions of the IDF have effectively been rewarded. Sharon eventually became prime minister, and many others involved gained serious prestige like he did.
The victims and their descendants have lived at least 2 more violent invasions from Israel into Lebanon after this, and Palestinians in Lebanon are still subject to ghettoization and exclusion, and most are stateless until today as Lebanon has refused to naturalize the refugee community.

@monika he literally didn't do it, he didn't say anything bad about Poland. You rather seem to be uneducated and don't understand him. He just compared the situation the Jewish mother was in and the fact that she suffocated her child because she was trying to hide and stay quiet to the countless similar situations Jewish mothers went through during the Holocaust in Poland because of the German terror apparatus. We all know Poland was under German rule and occupation back then, and Germans forced these situations, so it's not about Poland being bad per se, but about the situation being bad for Jews in Poland's territory, and situations like this happening, and they were happening, the same situations. There are countless documented stories from the WWII period in Poland, describing how Jewish mothers, hiding, killed their newborn children - by accident or on purpose, because they were trying to survive, often entire families of people were in such hiding places, and little baby crying could have revealed their hiding place to the Germans. So he compared the situations accurately, that's all. And I'm Polish from Poland, btw.

Not enough research went into this. A lot of people might raise an eyebrow when you say something like "Israel cannot be responsible for a massacre perpetrated by Christians". It would look strange to some, Christians might actually do something like that to Muslims. What I mean by that, is that the Sabra and Shatila massacre, simply cannot be understood, without first understanding that many of the Christian perpetrators prior had family members who were massacred at Damour, like for example Elie Hobeika - whose family and his fiancée were massacred at Damour by the "Palestinians". So the Phalangists were, as they were seeing it, exacting revenge. What about "love thy enemy"? Guess it's only a guideline.

No, Sabra Shatila is not committed by Israel but by the Phalangists. Educate yourself. Also the other ones were not committed by Israel: Sabra Shatila 1982, Damur 1967, Karantina 1976, Tel Al Zaatar 1976 and Sabra Shatila 1985 again (PLO against Amal)… One of the reasons it’s the most famous is because Jews were involved (lighting) and there are still too many racists.

@@ravenmusic6392 I read that the Lebanese government gave amnisty to the actual killers. As far as Lebanon is concerned, the event is seen as natural and forgiven.
The massacre took place on the night of Rosh HaShana, a solemn Jewish holiday, so to have the Israelis at their minimum alertness. I heard that the Christians used knives in order to be silent and not arrouse the Israelis, and that the Christians killed only the young men, who had been the actual combatants of the Palestinians.
The bottom line is, the Palestinians had massacred Lebanese Christians shortly before, and the Christians redeemed the blood of their murdered kinsmen.

@@benavraham4397 Oh ok so what you're talking about there is called a revenge killing, plain and simple. I don't care how many other massacres occoured, it doesn't justify the mass execution of refugees, and even less the aiding of that killing by a UN member state! And no, it wasn't just knives, it was guns, vehicles and other heavy weapons, the Israelis knew full well what was going on and directly facilitated the location of the camps through their recon assets. Killing young men is also common in genocides and war crimes, its what happened in both Germany and Bosnia, male civilians are killed as revenge, that doesn't justify it.
The reason why Israel is hated in Lebanon isn't even because of this even, its because of the thousands of civilians they've killed through their invasions and utterly indescriminate bombings that's galvanised the population. Hezbollah wouldn't exist if it wasn't for the southern Lebanon conflict

In September 1982, Lebanon also(I shouldn't say also, since Lebanon was the first to do so, before Israel, but still) establishes a commission led by Lebanese military court Germanos to investigate in the matter and publishes its report that put direct responsibility to Israel and the SLA and puts indirect responsibility to the Phalangists as their leaders didn't order these massacres.
