It is also worth noting that the ROK, through peaceful protest and revolution, eventually overthrew their military dictators with little to no opposition by the US and the current ROK is a government run by the people, unlike the DPRK. It is also true the skirmishes occurred, however often time the DPRK instigated them and on the day the war started thousands of troops attacked simultaneously. This obviously shows planning and is in no way a skirmish nor was it them "taking back colonized land". As clearly outlined in an agreement by the US, Japan, and the USSR, Korea was to be divided at the 38th parallel.
First and foremost Kim Il Sung was a guerrilla, however he was hardly the legend DPRK propaganda has played him up to be. His most successful raid was at the town of Pochonbo in which he only destroyed a Japanese-occupied police station, post office, foresters' office, local elementary school and a fire department hall. He also only stole roughly $36 worth of yen and caused about $144 yen in damage. For your most successful raid this is hardly anything worth talking about. It is also never clarified how many Japanese combatants there were. Given this assessment and that of first hand accounts at the time I think it is safe to say that Soviets were the ones doing 99% of the work "liberating North Korea" while Kim did little to nothing. On that foot its also important to note that Stalin was the one who personally agreed to drawing the line on the 38th parallel, while he had no input in it he could have easily said no and kept pushing. This not only shows that the US is not solely responsible for the split but also for shows your notion the the DPRK was not a puppet is false. As for the PRK. It is worth noting that it was originally established by Imperial Japanese authorities and had very strong communist tendencies and was not recognized for this reason, not because the US wanted to establish Japanese colonial rule. Another point to the contrary of your argument is that US forces requested that all Japanese soldier below the 38th parallel surrender to the US, while all soldiers above the 38th parallel were to surrender to USSR forces. Coming back to the point of democracy and the puppet of North Korea I have a few cases I'd like to bring to your attention. Firstly I'd like to call into question the legitimacy of these so called "democratic" "election" of Kim il sung. It says that voter turnout was 99.97% and that 98.49% voted for Kim il sung. These are major red flags and are hallmarks of election rigging. Secondly, I would like to reflect on your claim that the DPRK was self sufficient and independent of the USSR or CPC. So disregarding the obvious major trading that the DPRK did with these nations, how do you explain the arduous march? Surely it is no coincidence that the DPRK under went their most difficult economic downfall shortly after the collapse of the USSR and the economic reform in the CPC. Finally, I would like to discuss the election in the ROK. It does appear to be rigged at first glance, however when you take into account the fact that the North had banned the south from participating in their elections and visa versa it makes more sense. It also still managed to have voting diversity where the North's elections did not.
