We once decided not to end our Florida vacation for a category 4 storm. Good thing too. They just swept up the glass and back to business as usual the next day. Fun trip! P.S.We ate at Waffle House the next morning.

I had bugged out to my friends house (where we rode out Charley and would ride out Jean) and I wanna say the next mid morning I decided to ride back and check out my place. The other side of the eyewall hadn't come through yet but I looked at the weather and said pfff let's go. Everyone was out and about like it was nothing 🤣 but it was near cat one rain and periodic wind going through. Typical squall stuff. It was no big deal, we were all Floridaing....
I remember when a cat 3 was coming and my old job made us work half a day and we left around noon so we could get home before it got to bad. Had to make sure all the equipment was covered and the files in the bottom drawers were put up on the top of the cabinets in case the small stream by the office flooded. And they expected us back at work the day after the storm hit even though some roads were blocked because of downed trees.
For real! Bad weather, you going to work. Now, if it freezes we have to shutdown everything because no one has experience driving on ice. We don't have winter down here. Pick on us if you want but, do you want roads full of people who have zero experience driving on ice?
Tropical storms are like farts. Everyone knows they happen everywhere but to be afraid of it is only a shame. The only time you should be really worried about a hurricane is if you live near the water. Wind during a hurricane will make things fly but the flooding is the real scare. Certain roads become death traps for cars. Houses not on stilts near the water will be getting some unless they have sand bags. Sewage systems will back up leading to a shut down of clean water. The worst part is every place will close down leading to a proverbial ghost town for every place near the water. Typically when that flooding happens you want to keep an eye on how high the water is gonna be above sea level. The higher it gets the more apocalyptic it is gonna get. Tropical storms and cat 1 are just a great time for surfing at the beach. Cat 2 you want to get some sandbags ready. Cat 3 you want to seal your doors closest to the water. Cat 4 they will evacuate the area and booking a hotel inland is not a bad idea. I try to book a hotel in orlando because I can have a blast at the parks while everyone is watching the tv scared. Cat 5. Two words. Hurricane Katrina. Typically if I fear it is gonna get that bad I consider a storage facility in land for storing my most valuable stuff as looters are common after the storm so storing your most valued stuff in a safe place inland is a good insurance in case of cat 5. The most valued stuff is harder to replace but everything else can be covered by insurance if you are lucky to still have coverage.

Yeah but think of it this way, these non-Floridians are from states where a fart at the wrong time can cause billions in damages. Look at Cali when it was having all of those crazy wildfires, one of those fires that burned down an entire town was started because a power line got knocked down by a windstorm with gusts that go up to 60mph. Now imagine surviving something like that then coming to Florida and being told that a Tropical Storm or cat1 Hurricane is just a Tuesday.

If you're only concerned about the water then you have never experienced the wind of a cat 4 or five! Andrews wind wiped out the entirety of Homestead. I don't know if you still can, but you used to be able to see the foundations that were the only thing left of an entire community. That wasn't done by water.
When hurricane Irmas was way out as a cat 5 I gtfo. We got one of the last amtraks out of town. It took the same amout of time to get to NC as the people stuck on 95. We had a restroom, food, electric and AC, oh and beer. I was scared to get stuck in the airport! I'd definitely do it again. I do NOT take last minute chances with those cat 5s!

Unless you are in front of the eye everything is going to be OK.......but you might want to make sure you have a rake and some lawn bags for the leaves and small branches the breeze throws into your yard. Just saying.....

Forget about gassing up your car. Get yourself at least 10 gallons in storage containers. Get yourself a good gas powered generator so you can plug it into the house after the power goes out. You won't be doing a lot of driving during the storm any ways but the gas for your generator will ensure you have power for days or even weeks after the storm. That is one of the scary things not mentioned after a hurricane. Some power companies will take weeks just to fix power to some areas but they will get it fixed in mere hours if its near a location belonging to a city councilman.
The funny thing is the government actually does use the waffle House standard. If it's closed you're fucked if it's open with minimal service you're a little screwed. If it's totally open and everything's available it's just a rainstorm.

While this is funny, I live in the woods with a lot of trees. I watch for the amount of rain fall and wind speed cause I have trees come down during a normal thunderstorm. Needless to say I keep my hurricane supplies stocked and at the ready all year long. As well as enough gas to run the generator and chainsaw. The boss doesn't like it when you have to call out because of a fallen tree blocking the driveway.😜😂
While the waffle house is an on going joke, The Waffle House stays open for the first responders and the clean up crews. So if Waffle House is closed, its about to hit the fan and you are going to be on your own for a while. 😬
