Baton Rouge School Board makes history

After a 7-hour meeting, the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board broke with with Louisiana's 82-year history of rubber-stamping corporate exemptions and rejected ExxonMobil's request to be exempted from paying school property taxes.

I pay taxes in Louisiana, and ALL COMPANIES need to pay taxes! I need a military vehicle to get the grocery store because the roads are awful! Meanwhile, Wal-Mart has two registers open in their stores and most of the employees are on food stamps! It's time to get rid of the elected officials who are handing out corporate welfare, but are fine with cutting educational funding and starving the poor and disabled!

39:00 "help us bring investment here" is that not what she is attempting to block by suggesting that ExxonMobil is being targeted. These companies are already there, the potential for investment is already there. It's good to see locals attempting to influence the board and not make the process so easy to approve tax exemptions.
2:16:45 "we have to sustain it" you sustain it by taxes long term. The grant and programmes they give to school is optional but the tax is long term which is why it's important for them to get these exemptions. It's like taking $10000 now upfront instead of $1000 monthly for years it so shortsighted.
Glad to see that common sense won I pray many more applications go through these thorough process and that many of these people fight to remain on the board it has such a big impact on the state not just baton rouge.
