It was riskier than I normally am and I never intended to do that when I started the video. I have seen olive respond well to that sort of pruning so I decided to try and take them back to basics and start them again. Time will quickly tell if I made the wrong decision :)
Thanks loads for the shout out Xavier 🙏🙏 That was surprising the cut back. I’ll definitely be refreshing my self on this video when it comes to chopping mine. Thanks loads 👍👍
Nigel would say "stick in a pot". Peter Chan would say "you have to be brutal to practice the art." Looks good to me but that could be because I did this to so many of my trees this spring "Live or die" is what I tell them as they go back in winter shelter. Its good to be brave! Better to know you have developed the primary structure first. They could die without this work so you take the risk either way.
Thanks - ultimately they needed a lot of work to allow me to have hopes of them developing into decent bonsai in the future. I could have done a 'halfway' approach but it only meant I was putting off the issues for another year or two. Time will tell :)
That first one was right to my taste. Really nice shape. Number 2 is a nice slender feminine form to start and a nice stumpy stump form to end. I think you’ve said before it’s better to reset than chase a form you can’t celebrate. The roots on number 3 are great. It looks like you’ll have some nice taper to work with on that one. Your captions crack me up. I think all of these olives are great. Fun video to watch, very satisfying.
Oh Xavier 😳 I assume this is good practice to get good trees. That said my strategy this year will be to let them grow as much they can. To cut them back in the future 😁🙋♀️
Great video. Looking forward to see the results. It’s like going in for a totally new haircut, really short but I always say, it’ll grow. There are Russian olives up in the Okanagan that are really striking as the bark gets almost black with the light green leaves . I’ve managed to get some small ones so will try your technique and see.
If you are doing the same then please film it and we can both then see what results occur. If you arent uploading that then please send me the video file for me to add to my update video later in the year?
Olive #1 will probably come back with a vengeance. Good decision with the hard pruning on all your trees! I wonder if American Olive would respond well for me. Apparently we have a whole host of these trees...good video, AGAIN! Thanks for taking us along for the ride!
Hi Xav, I see a pattern in your work! If I can, I think you missed two branches in your 3rd, and 1 in the 5th; other than those you cut off every branch! Jokes aside, I didn’t know an olive could take so much abuse… well done and looking forward to see how they do!
80% of the stuff you cut off your trees was thicker than the two trees I have that, I paid $25 CAN for.... I often joke with Sam about them LOL My husband causally watched over my shoulder as you were mentioning the trunk may get some "inverse swelling". It's his new favorite term now... Those Olives are very nice Xavier! I'm jealous!! Some day I hope my twigs will be nice.
It goes against everything that feels right! I didnt intend it to go as hard as it did but I am hopefully that the bigger trees should repsond to it. The smaller ones - not so certain.
Are there any dormant buds on the stubs which you have left or are you expecting/hoping for new buds at the cut sites? Is there a danger that these will just push out new buds on the main trunks where you don't really want them? Brave work indeed, good luck.
No dormant buds that I can tell but I am assuming they will push out new growth from the cutsites themselves. This is exactly what the olive did last year that I airlayered. It was just a stump in a pot. I have seen this done before but I remain a little bit nervous :)
A lot of nobles on that Xav ha ha, some really radical work with them olives mate can’t say I have seen olives cut back to bare bones. hope it pays off for you.
Thanks Joe - I am trusting in Aussie Bonsai Bloke for this activity AND also the response the stump of last years air layer. It threw out loads of shoots from the cut site.

This makes me feel I need to take a look at my olive bonsai… it seems to be thriving and is covered in tiny olives.
I let mine go the last 2 years because they were growing olives. But they never got to the point where I could 'harvest' them :)
Lol, I agree on allmost nothing you did here😂, but in the end these are are yours.

Hopefully they have a future :)

Just wait until I start seeing some positive results first! I am pretty certain it will throw out new growth from the cut sites but...

Thanks for that Taco - the editing floor is litered with unsuitable 'one-liners'...
That last tree was cool 👌
Thanks loads fella 👍👍👍
It will make for a sad story if nothing responds though :(

That was my strategy for many years and then I realised it was time to be brave and throw the dice :)

Maybe you might want to wait and just make sure my approach does yield results. Its should do...
Thanks Xav! I have an olive tree that need some drastic reduction. You made me dare.🙂👍

No worries Guy - and if the ride ends up in a ditch then at least you know what 'not' to do :)

I don't know for sure they can take that much abuse but I am quietly hopeful after watching my airlayer stump respond with no branches on it.
This was some brave pruning mate. I'll be looking forward to the updates to see how they get on before I go kamikaze on my olive!
It is about time I risked some of my trees instead of you :)

My wife used to tell me that I was getting inverse swelling too :)

Still need to get used to cutting off so much from trees always so reluctant to rake so much off

So you can cut back quite heavily on Olives 👍
Apart from one, the est repsonded very well. All the best for 2024 :)
Looks like those pruners have p@#&%d you off! Or maybe the trees? I love hard cut backs, please post an update?
I definitely will but I am a tiny bit concerned that the Olives have not responded yet...
Are the olives hard to air layer
I did an airlayer last year and it was succesful.
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat lovely job
If you were mad at them I would have taken them off your hands. 😁
It was never meant to go that far Matt. But everytime I looked at the tree another branch was shouting horrible things at me...so they got severed :)
