OMG Thank you! I have been struggling with my Nikki carb for months. Rebuilt, generic replacement, put a manual choke on it, and I couldn't get it to stop surging. Bought a $15 set of jet drill bits on amazon and now it runs perfect! Thanks Teryl!
For those of you that didn't pay close attention to the video, you can clearly see the shafts are completely different. The choke and throttle shaft linkages hook up differently on the aftermarket carb (which you can clearly see in the video). That is because the aftermarket carbatrator is for a different engine.
After a lengthy search a direct Walbro replacement carb was found. There’s a link to it in the description. You can still use this video as a way to troubleshoot how to make a carb work that isn’t the right one. Now There’s Yur Dinner!!
After slowing the video down, I can see that the shaft top plates, at least the throttles, point different directions. I am very glad you did the video because my Cub has the Nikki carbatrator.
I was wondering if you have experienced the problems with the new ariens carburetor s. They constantly surge, mine has since day one. I think it is the side jet that has tiny port in it for EPA bs. If you have any fixes or info I would greatly appreciate it .
What is he talking about don't drink locktite.... Works a hell of lot better than that Amodium stuff...
@@PabloDiablo682 Now That Is Funny. Taryl seems to have alot of years of exp behind him. He also seems to have some research tools the average guy doesn't have. The fact is alot of these jobs a person could handle for oneself but most choose not to which clogs up shops at certain times of the year. I am actually afraid to advertise it brings all the wrong folks kinda like the keyboard cowboys only worse i gotta deal with their feeble brains and wallets in person.
I'm polish it's in my blood to buy the wrong parts and make them work to save a penny. Might take me a week and more money in parts than 2 of the right new ones. Except for my Harley Davidsons. 40 flatty and 49 pan. The Ventura's make a huge difference.
Taryl is a master mechanic, and his gang are a riot !
Nikki Sixx should stick with music and leave the carburtratin’ to the professionals. 😆
He was crap at that too couldnt play his base to save himself
He should also leave the bass guitar go the pros 😂😂😂😂
Awesome video as always. Clear and concise instructions. Best on the tube. Thanks for sharing your expertise.
Need more DEF LEPPARD IN THE BACK GROUND...
I had to fix a 1980's Craftsman edger with a Tecumseh 3hp engine with a diaphragm pump type carb that is unavailable in most places or to expensive to buy. I replaced it with a bowl type carb with the same choke and throttle plate set up as the old one. It was for a newer Tecumseh 3hp to 5hp engine and it worked great. Matching it up with the pictures on the innerscreen was the hard part. Thanks Taryl, good video.
This was a hoot. I learned more in 3 minutes than i gleaned in 3 days of researching my carb problems. I've got a $2000 mower with 37 hours on it running a nikki. (Surges) Back to square one.
Hoo-Boy Taryl knows his stuff!!!! That Nikki Sixx carb pales next to the Walbarrow Carb, it is the cat's meow.
TARYL. The carburetor you needed to use was the walboro 69720. It is what ive been using to swap out Nikki for. I discovered it on a junk mower when I saw the newer engine with this carb on it. Must have been a new mfg option but theres your dinner!
Will check it out
Thank You

Trick to accurately sizing bits is to use the smooth shank as a gauge. I drill jets by gripping the shank in visegrips then spinning the jet between thumb and forefinger, then after the bit breaks through slide the jet up and down a couple of times to deburr the hole. I've done this with motorcycle carb low speed jets since the 1980s and just now got into Briggs because I want more power from my mower. If you mix up your jet drills use a micrometer or the very handy Harbor Freight digital calipers. (They're accurate too, and let me leave my expensive Tesa and Mitutoyo in the machine shop.) Excellent video!
AT&T/Direct Tv customer service asked “what will you watch for entertainment” when I cancelled my subscription. LOL This is what I will watch for entertainment. Brilliant work
Watched this yesterday, went to HF and got some drill bits today and now my 15.5 hp Briggs is sounding great. Thanks a million!
Did you replace the Nikki with a Walbro?
Careful Tayrl, the F.D.A.is watching you use the spoiled lock-tite.HAHAHA!!😂👍
The "F.D.A." is the least of Tayrl's worries... FBI, KGB, the National Democratic Party etc.
Love these guys they are so right to the point on everything they fix thank u grass rats garage and tyryl
I wouldn't do that swap on a bet! Taryl, you got skills.
How good is slippers!! Good fix too. Swap your sparkplug necklace for a stethoscope, that carb jet tweak was great👍
Nice fix, those Nikki carbs are a pain!
Always look forward to and appreciate your videos, talent and bizarre sense of humor. We sharpen and work on walk behind and old fashioned people powered push mowers in Alameda, California. Thanks for your very entertaining contributions to UA-cam.
You can use a fine saw to lengthen the slot and sand the choke shaft to fit without drilling. Just done that to my nephews push mower and it worked well. It'll work in a pinch to get him back to cuttin.
Thanks for the information Taryl. I will just rebuild my Nikki 6 carburetor and save myself some time and drilling too. Good day too. VF
WHAT IF THE "GREENIES" COME AND CHECK THE MOWER FOR BIDENS GREEN NEW STEAL?
You dont need lock-tite when a dab of weld will do. And the stuff tastes kinda sweet especially the red.
The aerospace industry likes to have expiration dates on all their chemicals. It helps to keep the prices high!
Nice job Taryl. Will keep that in mind. Good day too. Now I have to clean out my J D mowers cooling fins.
I just checked and my B&S came with the Walbro from the factory. Cool.
That was fun to watch, thanks for the video. I would have liked to have seen it under a REAL load to see how it did. (Actually cutting grass and having it in gear just to see if there was a lack of power due to the smaller CFM carb.)
“Whats going on choke shaft?” Better than any show on tv
Go with aftermarket Kohler for the k361/M14, (i think), has adjustable main, idle < mixtures & speed rest adj's, (switch butterfly shafts) (interscreen/ebay) (EPA/no CARB)
what about a replacement carb for this POS ---> Model 31H777, TYPE 0297E1 , CODE 040126ZD
These are people that work on the space shuttle!!! The couch mechanics don't tell you the extra 1 hr labor it takes to dink around to make that 20 dollar carb to work.
No kidding, just put a eBay 20$ Nikki carburetor on! But cool video.
Great Job on the Carb. Don't give up your Day Job! Hollywood is not ready..............
Noticed that sweet MTD Yard Bug.. best rider ever! Hope you do a video on it.
You guys are the best, had your way with that aftermarket carbatrator
I love his skits. Taryl honestly sometimes I just watch your videos for the skits. Dont get me wrong I love a lot of the how to's
Good job man,, thats the difference between a mechanic and a parts changer..
Taryl, you're videos are jam-packed with information and tips. Thanks for taking the time to share your expertise. I am trying to find a Walbro carb to replace a Nikki on a B&S 21hp vtwin, engine model # 4045A7. It looks different than the ones I have seen on here. B&S shows a BS-699807 Nikki carb for it. You can see by looking at that carb, that it has a unique design. I hope you can point me in the right direction. Thanks again
You need this one 591731 Carburetor Replacement for Briggs
Thank you
I'm lmao because I mostly watch these videos for the little comedy skits now. I definitely appreciate the help they've provided on some jobs. Is there really that many examples of these different stereotypes he portrays though? Probably 🤣 Fecal fingers is probably my current favorite 🤣🤣🤣
I replaced my Nikki on my 26hp B&S Intek with a Chinese one. Ran better then when it was new. It was running rough and popping, runs perfect now. Carburator was cheaper to buy them the Nikki rebuild kit.
DW WD I also replaced my Nikki on an 18 b&s with an aftermarket Nikki and it has ran great for 2 years so far
So much easier when you could adjust the main jet screw especially if you going to cut deep grass and you need to make it just a bit richer to keep it running smooth and cool the cylinders and prevent detonation or valve burring and all that.
I bought one of those POS , said it was for a 14-17 hp I was working on a Briggs 15.5. it ran almost as good as the first time you put the carb. back on. I kind of thought that it would have to be drilled out. But I do not have bits that small. Now I see you had to drill out for the butterflies. Kind of glad now I rebuilt the old one. I got 13.5 I will try this on. One mower I had came with the Nikki carb. it gave me Nothing but trouble. Had it cleaned and rebuilt. But it never ran right. As luck would have it I got an old blown engine with a Walbro carb. on it. So I rebuilt it and put it on and it worked.
Lock -tite, Buck-a - drop savior. Boy did I get in trouble calling it that in front of a customer. WHaaat?? You charging me a buck for THAT???
I just love your videos. You always make me laugh. You are brilliant.
Lol. I agree with the expiration dates on consumables, but when I worked for the Air Force they would take it away the second it went out of date regardless. Trouble is, stuff would almost be out of date by the time you got it in from supply so you would be lucky to use it for a couple of months. Just like tools that need calibrating. It's good today but at one second after midnight, forget about it or get wrote up. hehe.
Taryl I think you are possibly working on the last lt1000 with a fully intact hood! Lol
Yup. I got one. Hoods bad lol
Mines drilled out with 2 much bigger blots sticking out lol
My Briggs had a s gasket between the head & the intake that. Restricted the hole about 40% I took my Diemel & cut it so it was wide open I think I gained a couple more horse power. Runs great.
Nice work!!! You're a genius!
it ain't the space shuttle taryl just a lawn mower !!!
It does work, Carl Childers told me.
And I thought I was the only one that practiced their calls before I make them...lol
That's pretty impressive. I wonder if the right size carbs would work better.
Poor guy is more uptight then a 🐱⬅cat on a hot tin roof...HAHA!!.
Drinking that whiskey 96 proof. 🙃
Or more nervous than a long tail cat 🐈 in a room full of rocking chair's .
@@RANDALLOLOGY That too...HAHA!!.
"1st I'm gonna have to take a nap" LOL. I've sweated & taken notes before calling smart fixer-uppers too but not tried taking a shot before making the call.
hilarious I love how this guy handles business, of course, the hard asses will drop a tampon whenever you don't go by the book.
tried this with same mower but has a 19.5 briggs and the the main jet was already bigger than a #62 drill bit so jus changed out the shafts installed it and it does GREAT!!,,,,,no popping surging...etc..etc...
Always enjoy your videos thank you
Brilliant video thank you 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Wondered if that's my problem with my 8 horse Tecumseh Snowblower. Using a donor carb off of a John Deere snowblower which has adjustable main jet as the oringinal carb had a fixed main jet. Can't get it to stop popping, surging, sputtering/stalling.
Start playing with the choke. It will be a good indication if it runs too lean. Make sure your gas is fresh.
I had do drill out a Honda after market carb also to make the choke plate fit also and it was the same size drill bit 👍
WOW YOUR BEST VIDEO SO FAR Thanks Ed Loretto Ontario Canada
Thanks for the great idea on drilling out the main jet. I purchased a used 2009 Troy Bilt Super Bronco 48" mower. The carb on it wasn't original and I could tell it is a cheap China knockoff. The engine is a Kohler SV600 Courage 20HP. It ran terrible just like the mower in this video. The jet isn't removable so I just drilled it and it is running great now!
You can get 1.5" Scotch-Brite pads for the die grinder with an arbor and that arbor also takes sanding disc's so you can polish up for welding jobs
Good job, very good demonstration!!
... And as always there's your... JUNIOR!!!!
Thanks taryl , again I'm cleaning my coffee up after spraying it out of my nose laughing ! Keep it up .
Wanted to just use it all put together the way it was that's what I usually do and I don't have to mess with it I've got three motors a 12 horse at 145 and a 17.5 running the same carburetor you have right there and it didn't even take it apart I used all the aftermarket stuff and it worked
Very informative. You’re good Taryl. 👍
Many thanks for the Walbro part #.
You fool! You are a hoot to watch. And a pretty dang good small engine guy to boot!
Hi taryl, you could try to buy a metric REAMER for 10.00 buck at mcmaster and ream the holes .measure your shaft with your dial calipers to get the exact size of the shaft.reamer come in straight cut and spiral {that's for holes that arn't solid all the way through.reamers come in sizes by .001. example 1/4 in = .250 ...so you can get .248 or 249 or oversize at 251 or 252 ect.
you'll have less air leaking with the right fit. great vids.
I have the same engine on my mind that you're working on it's a 14 horsepower eliminated Backfire sensor I have aftermarket car braider no problem I just slept it on there runs fine
I think its still a hair lean and would go one more jet drill bigger. I also hope the gas in it was fresh.
ive had the same loctite for atleast 5 years still works great, i do shake it though and keep it in the fridge living in a hot climate
What about a replacement for the Nikki Carburetor on a John Deere Snow Blower JD1130SE. Engine is a Briggs & Stratton, 1550 Snow Series Max, Model - 21M214, Type - 0117E1 I guess you could try using a 690111 and install the primer fitting.
I have had all sorts of problems with this Nikki Carburetor on this Snow Blower.
Excellent video by the way. Lots of valuable information in your videos.
Cheers
Willy
You crack me up Taryl. Since I have more time than money I'll be making these modifications to get a few engines back to running condition. Them Nikki Sixx's were junk when they were made. LOL
I would have gone straight to a Holley 4bbl.
Well I bought 3 of them NIKKI carbs and they are nothing but JUNK!! Feeding them Loctite will not help anything. New out of the box I am getting a bout 1 day of run time, however the last one didn't last 30 minutes. The worst part is I threw the old carbs in the scrap and hauled them across the scales before knowing the problems that was coming!! I saw where the Key Board cowboys said they interchange, but I figured they didn't know a hard drive from a paper trail!! So I am glad Taryl did this Video. I have ordered two of these carbs and gonna do the swap. I have the same exact tractor that he was doing in the video. Anyway I am tired of the junk!! Thanks Taryl
Walbro company started their roots in Cass City Michigan the town that I was born in
A must say .. you are good at what you do...i watched 5 videos so far..i think i will fix my onw mower
Brilliant people love the videos thank you ❤️👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
You guys are hysterical! If you'd only adopt me...
Terrell show how to take up & down. slack out of crank shaft push mower do you have a video of that?
Taryl, you know more than us dudes in the comment section lol. Don't let idiots spin you up.
Lol the beginning...thats me trying to use the phone.
In gonna do the taryl dance every time I fix something
I knew a guy that was so concerned about those damn 'use by' dates, that one time he asked me if I wanted a case of water, to use for my plants or whatever. I asked why he wanted to give it away. He replied the USE BY date was past. I tried to tell him water never expires, but he didn't believe me, LOL.
@Eric Wood The apartment building I, and he, lived in is in a rural area and has a well. We have a high sulfur content in the water here, known as the rotten egg smell. You can rid the water of that by boiling it, since the sulfur is a gas. Some ppl simply let a pot of water stand out over night and that also dissipates the gas. The water is safe to drink otherwise, but some tenants buy bottled water to drink instead. Such as the guy I mentioned. It was an entire case, a 24 pack of water in 16oz bottles. It did indeed have a 'use by' date either on the plastic of the case wrap, or on the individual bottles. And I know what you mean, those dates are often just there because ppl expect them to be there, and not because the item will ever 'expire'. This dude btw, tho a nice fellow, was simple minded. I wouldn't say 'mentally challenged' really, just simple. And I could not convince him that water does not go bad, lol. He still had his doubts since the water was dated, lol. Srsly.
Tis guy is a hoot!!!!! keep on fixin!!!
Take the Nikki jet and size your drill to it,then take the walbro jet and shoulder it closed and then drill it to the size of the jet from the Nikki,it worked real well for jetting that walbro
😆 loctite born on date!
Very good modification
Tarly you have just about replaced tv cable for me 2 thumbs up for you. But all your subscribers need more uploads from you all. Can’t wait to see the next roof palamino video. I hope the rear differential lock works for the long term. I have enjoyed all of the uploads and look forward to seeing the next one.
A STRIPPERS POLE AND SOME FLASHING LIGHTS IN THE BACK GROUND WOULD REALLY BRING THEM IN...
Did that on an 18hp Crapsman. I punched out the main jet and the top air jet and between the two, It ran like new. The mower came with three extra carburetors. I had to order a chineseum carb to get it to work. All the OEM carburetors refused to work on it. You can get after market with the antibackfire device on them. Sold the lawn mower and never saw it again.
those dislikes are from the people who dont know what a carbutrater is good video taryl
Bought a cheap Amazon replacement carb to salvage a Sears/Briggs generator that had been submerged in flood water and sat for a year. Original carb was toast, but engine still rotated. Replacement carb ran too rich, but let me test engine for an hour to make sure it wasn't going to blow up before I spent more money on it. Bought correct OEM carb for $100 and it ran perfect. Generic carbs are okay, but aren't an exact match. I had a time constraint, Harvey was coming, so I shelled out for the OEM part. Otherwise, I would have experimented with drilling out air passages to bleed in more air. It's a generator, not the space shuttle, and only needs to run good at one RPM.
You are DA MAN!
I replaced my Walbro with a aftermarket Walbro carb. The needle and seat leaked from the start. I been running it a few years and it runs good but I am now rebuilding the old carb to put back on.
I could be be wrong, but didn't Taryl do a video where he drilled out a Nikki jet with the same results?
same size choke and throttle plate will give you the same horsepower. same air coming in, might have to adjust the jet
I have a grey 2006 Craftsman LT1000 16hp Intek, very similar to this mower. Mine has a factory Walbro carb, looks like Briggs 594593 is the replacement carb for mine, which appears to have the exact same throttle shaft hookups and everything as this mower did. Likely you would hardly have to do anything to that one to swap in place of a Nikki in this. I can't imagine you'd have to do much to run a 16hp carb on a 17.5hp.
Excellent video. Thanks so much.
I think I'd try it in some tall grass to see if it starves for gas. If so, I'd drill the main jet the next size up. These air-cooled engines need a little extra gas thru them to keep the cylinder from running too hot. Just saying. You got some room to play here.
The before and after Matinee movie, is funnier than Ronnie in a 1920's swimsuit.
Great job T ❤
