She almost turned this song down until David Foster said he'd give it to Whitney instead. She jumped right on that.

A very wonderful reaction 🗻! She was around 28 years old. Eric Carmen sang the original song in 1975. Yes, she hit that high note 🤯. I see 👁👁 you have reacted to Céline Dion before: Power Of Love and That's The Way It Is. All By Myself was released as the fourth single from Céline Dion's 1996 album: Falling Into You. The song was written by Eric Carmen and Sergei Rachmaninoff. The song was produced by David Foster. The song reached #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart, #1 on the Latin Pop Airplay chart, #4 on the Hot 100 and #5 on the Hot Latin Songs chart. It also reached #1 in Canada. It peaked within the Top Ten in France, Austria, Finland, Iceland, Hungary, Italy, Belgium and Ireland.
The music video was directed by Nigel Dick and contains fragments from Céline Dion's photo session for her "Falling Into You" album cover and some scenes from her Live à Paris concert.
The song by was originally recorded by Eric Carmen in 1975 and released as the first single from his debut album: Eric Carmen. The verse is based on the second movement (Adagio sostenuto) of Sergei Rachmaninoff's 1900-1901 Piano Concerto #2 in C minor, Opus 18. The chorus was taken from the song: "Let's Pretend", which Eric Carmen wrote and recorded with his previous band: The Raspberries, in 1972
Eric Carmen explained: "The song started with the solo. It started 4 bars at a time. Eventually, over a period of 2 months, that entire interlude had been written. Then my quest was to put this in the middle of an actual song. Then it was a matter of trying to figure out what kind of song and how could I do it. I was listening to Sergei Rachmaninoff's 2nd piano concerto (written in 1901) and I heard the melody which I used for the verse. Then I needed a chorus. I went back and listened to a song that I had written in 1973 called 'Let's Pretend' for The Raspberries. I just took those notes and took it from there. I thought: ''Let's Pretend', was a nice melody'. The song didn't go quite as far as I thought it should have. I'll go back and steal from myself for this".
Eric Carmen continued: "There's not nearly as much fuel in being happy as there is in being miserable. Being miserable is a great catalyst for songwriting, for me anyway. I'm constantly amazed at the amount of wonderful work that Mozart did during periods when he was fairly happy. His music during those periods reflects the happiness. On the other hand, I can't imagine that Sergei Rachmaninoff was happy when he was writing the second symphony and second piano concerto. I don't think the anguish and angst of those melodies comes out of being peachy keen".
Eric Carmen added: "If you walked in a record store and saw 'All By Myself' on the record label, you'd know what the song was about, and it's an emotion that everyone has felt at some point in their life. Therefore, it's a song that goes immediately to your heart. The lyrics are as simple as I could possibly make them. Sometimes my melodies are so dramatic that if the lyric is that dramatic, it's overkill".
When Eric Carmen wrote the song, he thought Sergei Rachmaninoff's music was in the public domain, meaning he could use it free of charge. After the song came out, he found out it wasn't and agreed to a monetary settlement with Rachmaninoff's estate.
    Critical Reception 🗣:
Bill Lamb from About.com placed it at number nine in their ranking of "Top 10 Celine Dion Songs".
Entertainment Weekly editor Chuck Eddy said: "But only in her desolate cover of Eric Carmen's 'All by Myself' does she truly crash through the glass ceiling of passion".
Pip Ellwood-Hughes from Entertainment Focus called it "incredible" and "one of the best recorded vocals ever captured". He added that: "listening to Dion reach the highs she does on that song is magical and it sends goosebumps down your spine look (sic) nothing else can".
Dave Sholin from the Gavin Report commented: "Demand by both programmers and the public for this rendition of Eric Carmen's 1976 smash made it the obvious choice to be the third single lifted off Celine's multi-platinum and Grammy-nominated album: Falling Into You".
Kevin Courtney from Irish Times said: "It's probably a good thing that Celine is all by herself people in the room with her might have their eardrums shattered by her climactic, over the top delivery".
Christopher Smith from TalkAboutPopMusic wrote: "Only a few vocalists could possibly attempt to do justice to Eric Carmen's 1975 classic, but with her out-of-this-world voice, Celine is one of them and perhaps the only one big enough to lift the song's long and emotional chords at the end. Celine shatters glass and blows ear drums as she reaches that final 'anymore'. Bring on the orchestra, drums and guitar as they prove no match for Celine as she repeats the song's central line again and again 'don't wanna be, all by myself'. Earth shattering and epic are the words and it was hardly surprising that it wouldn't be released as a single in due course either".
    Lyrics 🗒:
    When I was young
    I never needed anyone
And makin' love was just for fun
    Those days are gone
    Livin' alone
I think of all the friends I've known
But when I dial the telephone
    Nobody's home
    All by myself
Don't want to be, all by myself anymore
    All by myself
Don't want to live, all by myself anymore
    Hard to be sure
Some times I feel so insecure
And love so distant and obscure
    Remains the cure
    All by myself
Don't want to be, all by myself anymore
    All by myself
Don't want to live, all by myself anymore
    When I was young
    I never needed anyone
And makin' love was just for fun
    Those days are gone
    All by myself
Don't want to be, all by myself anymore
    All by myself
Don't want to live, all by myself anymore
    All by myself
Don't want to be, all by myself anymore
    All by myself
Don't want to live, all by myself anymore
    All by myself
Don't want to be, all by myself

In 2002, Billboard named her as the "Best-selling contemporary female artist in history". Céline Dion has released 27 studio albums, seven live albums, 19 compilation albums, and 25 box sets. Seven of her albums have sold at least 10 million copies worldwide, the second-most among women in history.
She is is the best-selling Canadian artist of all time and the best-selling artist in the Nielsen SoundScan era in Canada (from 1996 to present). She is also the second best-selling female artist in the US since Nielsen began tracking sales in 1991 with over 53.2 million albums sold. Billboard placed her second among the best-selling female album artist of the 2000s Decade in the US with 17.3 million albums sold via Soundscan. According to Billboard, she is the sixth Greatest Billboard 200 female solo artist of all time, as well as the eighth Greatest female solo artist of all time in Billboard's chart history.
Born into a large family she was discovered by her future manager and husband René Angélil, and emerged as a teen star in her home country with a series of French-language albums during the 1980s. She gained international recognition by winning the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest, where she represented Switzerland with a rendition of the song: "Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi". Her debut English-language album: Unison (1990), established her as a viable Pop artist primarily in North America and several English-speaking markets, while her album: The Colour Of My Love (1993), gave her global superstardom.

Fun Fact 🕵‍♀: During a 2019 interview on the TV series: Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, Céline Dion revealed that the famous high note (F5) in her 1996 song: "All By Myself", leading into the key change had not been planned but David Foster surprised her with it when she appeared for recording. When Céline Dion asked why the surprise, David Foster told her that if she couldn't sing it, other singers would, which prompted Céline Dion to prove to David Foster that she could sing it.
