Thank you, whoever bet Tom that he should sing some Kirby, and then went on and won the bet!

Man, I love your analysis of this comic; the Bob Dylan stuff hysterical ! So much deeper than the usual dismissal. I havent seen many of these in person; I figured it must be his take on flower power. I tend to relate it to a little known scif if childrens show from Britain ; called the Forever People; the opening intro to that show is alone worth watching and relates strongly to the super futuristic weird ness . edit: Kirby shouldve been let loose on Krypton!

I’ve always felt this where Superman started to be more of a 3dimensional character via Kirby! 🔥💎 Pushing him to question things about himself! Jack enriched everything he did with a unique potential! Great video ,Tom!😊

I would like to see a New Gods series written and drawn by Tom Scioli. The analysis and commentary is really informative.

@@totalrecallshow , Tom, i hope you get to cover Jack Kirby's design work on the unproduced movie adaptation of Roger Zelazny's novel Lords of Light and the theme park that was designed around it but never built. The movie Argo barely touched on it.

Tom, New Gods Sunday School is wonderful. Therapeutic, even. Keep up the great work.

Not bad at all, I had hoped this would be more about his Olsen run, including #136 that introduced Dubbilex - I think that is one of his most underrated creations... still you have done a great job here... thank you.

This was the very first Kirby comic I ever read! I was in my early twenties, a bit late to discover Kirby… but it blew my mind! It was the grey scale trade paperback print, so this is the first time I’ve gotten to see the luminous coloring! Thank you Tom!

The "K" was Robert Kanigher, so Kirby got "X." After Kirby left DC, Jeanette Kahn got the new "X" because the K was now assigned to Paul Kupperberg.
(Interestingly, Joe Kubert was assigned "Q" because his name was pronounced 'Q-bert').

I believe that cover was inked by Frank Giacoia, not Colletta. It may have been part of a presentation that Kirby had already assembled. Superman looks pretty good in the image.
Kirby's take on Superman is so brilliant, it's almost Shakespearean. We know that some of Kirby's first work was at Fleisher Studios, who produced those beautiful Superman cartoons. Kirby had no doubt moved on by the time they came out, but I bet he was aware of them. The Fleisher Superman was made more dramatic by portraying him as having to exert great effort to use his powers to defeat his foes. He usually had to go through a struggle to win.

I like how you call their transformation a "Power Rangers thing" cuz lately, I've been thinking the best way to adapt Kirby's Fourth World would be in tokusatsu style.

Good God! What an interpretation of Kirby's "lyrics". I never gave it any melody. That was Jim Morrison-eske. My mind never went there and is now summarily "blown". Kudos. Earnest love has no shame in its game. Well done!

Well, Superman was divided between Schwartz and Boltinoff (who nominally edited the first Jack Kirby JOs).

I believe Wally Wood campaigned to be the inker on the early fourth world books.

I've read that the assignment was mostly about budget, to balance out the "high" pay Kirby was given (it couldn't have been much back then.) Colletta was always willing to crank the stuff out cheap, if there was a lot of it. He gave them what they paid for, which was often the bare minimum.) I think, to get the job, Royer also worked at the low rates, but what a great ride it must've been for him. And Wood would've been awesome.

Forever People and the New Gods are such strange concepts that modern DC media has floundered to figure out how to handle. They're fun in Young Justice but not quite what they were. They really don't seem to fit into the DC universe well. They stand best when they stand alone at sunrise.

This is my least favorite of the fourth world titles, but the more I look and read the 11 issues it’s definitely has all my respect as a great Kirby creation
