I had this album on cassette and would bump it while driving in my late 80s red pick up truck. I thought I had it going on. Lol. Thank you for this one. It definitely takes me way back. I love how open you are to listening to just about everything and appreciating the music for it's time and place. Congrats on your new baby!
Ah man! I love Thief of Hearts. It’s got a very 90s hip hop sound to me, and Dita getting all possessive and confrontational just makes me smile…. Like I could hear Tiffany Pollard singing this to Hoopz or Deelishis after Flav dumps her. Lol. Giving me New York attacking Pumkin after she got spit on energy. 🤣🤣🤣
If you read the diaries of Shep Pettibone about this album, Shep told that Madonna wanted a dark, less polished and and a raw edge. This was her first time who she have a bitch attitude, before ''Human Nature'', ''She Not Me'', ''Bitch i'm Madonna''. He told that he and Madonna transfered most of the demos demonstrations to the final product for most of the songs of this album, that was in intentional by Madonna. If you listen most of the songs of this album, you hear this raw, dark and demos-ish production and that was her decision. ''In This Life'' was the most evident, the demo was identical to the final product except one thing adding later to complete the feel of the song. And wait for ''Words'', one of the best lyrical songs, so relevent. she continued also her bitch attitude with the next song of this album.
Although it may sound like an 80s leftover, the subject matter was very current for Madonna. The line “Here she comes, thinks she can have his child, well anybody can do it” is most probably autobiographical. Two of Madonna’s exes had their first child around the time this was recorded. Sean Penn & Robin Wright’s first child was born on April 13, 1991. Warren Beaty and Annette Bening’s on January 8, 1992. Ironically, it would be another 6 years before Madonna gave birth to her first child. Speaking of… I haven’t have the chance to say congrats to the proud parents and a very warm welcome to baby Empress 😘
It's because the most of the songs of this album used the demo demonstrations to the final product (for example, the most evident, was ''In this Life'', the final product was the demo outside one touch adding later), intentional by Madonna herself.
Yup. This song exists in the weird space that is between Madonna acknowledging her hip hop inspirations and also aspiring to the sound change that is house. She kind of lives in that space for the entirety of the 90s, so expect more of the same.
I knew you wouldn’t really dig it, but knew you’d be bopping to the little funky “You do it, you break it” sections. I really like Thief of Hearts and I think it’ll grow on you. 💙
I completely agree with you. It's not 10s or a fire bop but i would not skip it while listening to the whole album. It's okay, i get the demo-ish quality as well. I agree. I guess it works with the flow of the album after 3 more laid back slower songs and with Where Life Begins and Waiting both leaning more towards the jazzy hip hop side of things to switch it up with this house/ pop -Dance song. It has its fans though.
I don't remember hearing this track, but I would have enjoyed it on my 3 hour drive to Yuma today! And I love that it's got that early demo sound, too! Oddly, I think it would hit if it was released today!
After you do all your reacts to this album, go back and listen to it in entirety, all at once. It's the only way to appreciate this album imo. I personally love this song. But, I love almost every single song on this album except Fever (just because it's a remake) and the last song. Idk why I always skip that one. Nice to see you are doing well after having your bundle of joy. Lots of love and hugs, little mama. ☺️
Imagine your man being taken by someone so dull. And can you imagine Annette Benning was supposed to be Catwoman in Batman Returns but she got pregnant. That’s what she gets stealing peoples menseses.
@Tainted Life Wow CATWOMAN! ANNETTE AS CATWOMAN!!!!? Tim must have been high thinking that. Madonna was up for that roll too, but turned it down. Of course, the best woman won Ms. Michelle Phifer, but not Annette, lol.
Question - Have there been any Madonna tracks you didn’t think were fire but were so catchy you were humming them all day? Or songs you were not keen on the first listen but you grew to love and woukd re-rate?
@@EmpressReacts In the last demo (it's exist few demos of the song), she made a verse at the end of the song, but while Shep and Madonna mixing this album in september 1992, theses two decides to not used the last verse in the final product, ending with ''Stop Bi*ch, Now Sit you Ass Down'' instead.

Totally feeling you on this one Empress!! This song was always bopable for me but definitely not a 🔥bop. I did always love the sound of broken glass and her saying “B*tch at the beginning of the song though 😂
You’re right! I always this thought this could have been great if it was finished. Sounds like a demo. There’s a lack of back up vocals and production on a lot of tracks on the album which, by design, conveys a feeling of loneliness on the part of Madonna or “Dita”
Shep told that most of the songs in the final product was the demonstrations of the demos transfered for the final product (like this or ''Bad Girl'') and this was intentional by Madonna, since she wanted a dark, unpolished and raw production of this album.
I actually love the next song after this (“Words”) a lot! But both of these songs in particular really sound the most dated… they remind me of the iconic Streets of Rage soundtrack back in the Sega Genesis days. Very tinny and video-game like in sound, very icy and sinister in atmosphere. All I can say is, going from this album to Bedtime Stories will give you whiplash. They sound a lot further than 2 years apart.
I’ve always loved Thief of Hearts. The demo leaked by the way, and it has a more melancholy feel than this version, but it’s basically a stripped down version of the final version.
I think it intentionally sounds rough around the edges and scratchy and fits the tone of the album perfectly....its not one of the better songs but fun all the same 🙌
I think the Erotica album was attempting to ride high on the success of Justify My Love. Most of those songs sound very reminiscent of the two singles from "Immaculate Collection". As for this song... I sort of agree with you. As someone who dabbles in music production, I can hear so many things I'd do differently for this song. It does sound rather demo-ish. Not Madonna's best material, in my opinion.
I've never liked this song, but I've never skipped It like someone wrote here. To me this song and words are on the same level, quite fun but no so catchy. The only songs of these albums that I've always loved are Erotica and Rain, and a little less Bad girl and Deeper and Deeper. Not my fave album from Madonna of course. But I hope you are going to love Rain like me. Usually I warn you about some unteleased songs, and there are 5 or 6 songs from this album, but I didn't tell you, since they are absolutely forgettable 😁 Bye dear Empress. To the next song 🤗😘

But again, another one she never sang live.
You gotta bump it on the freeway to get the full experience lol. I think the reason why it sounds like an 80s song to you because the drumbeat is an Express Yourself/Vogue knock off. Which low-key gets used again in the next track 😩😩😂😂😂😂 Fun fact: apparently this song is about Warren Beatty’s wife Annette Bening… there’s some tea there about her being the reason why Warren and Madonna broke up. ☕️☕️☕️
@@EmpressReacts Heres the tea: Annette and Warren worked on Bugsy together which filmed while he was still dating Madonna. It’s a classic tale of the edgy girl losing out to “little Susie homemaker”. This song is definitely part of the influential vibe, but not revolutionary like the best on this album.

No her Erotica LP
She had me when the glass broke at the beginning and I did sit my ass down at the end. To me still a cool gem.

This song is a 10 for me, I just jam to this still and wish she had done a video so badly. Lol
A video prolly would have been cool
The brilliance of Madonna is not every song can be a '10' but give it a dubtronic remix n ther you go.another club banger!
@dubtronic is KING!!!
One of my favourite songs on the erotica album. The switch up when she started rapping is what made the song.
