- I was asked to help a lady open a window in her bathroom. I assumed that it was just stuck. When I got there I noticed it was PVC but also that it had no handle attached. Like most people in this situation I tried to put the handle back in its place and see if i could open the window that way. Unfortunately there were bits that had snapped off which made it impossible to open that way.
I have to resort to a few tricks I know and thankfully I do get the window open. I am sorry about the quality of the video but I hadn't planned on making one.

I have tried this but my window has a non-removable seal so I can't see a darn thing. The window is jammed on only one side and I still can't get a hook on the locking pins. Any ideas?

you need to use a paint stripper to prize open the gap. Its better than using a screwdriver as it will spread the pressure and not chip or dent the upvc

Thanks, I have a stuck mechanism on my window that opens from the bottom and was quoted £250 to supply and fit new mechanism. I decided to have a go myself and looked on youtube and found this video, I will try thiand if I window open I will buy a new mechanism for £20 and fit myself

You need to look at a working window first, mine was vertical on the handle so had to be levered up.

One side of my bathroom window wont open. The other side does. Same type of window as this. Opens at the bottom. Was fine yesterday
If it's the same as this one then it's really easy to sort. Just don't pull the whole rubber strip out as you can then add it back. Good luck
What do you recommend for a window with internal pins that engage with the verticals on the frame?

hi removed my handle to fit a new one but the opening / closing metal catch at the bottom will not move fully to the left as I open the window ?...can you advise...thx
Hi there. I can only suggest some WD40 to see if that will loosen it up. Other than that it's really hard to diagnose over the internet. Good luck my friend
I looked at other windows in house. Those windows when in closed position, I can’t move the lock mechanism , without using handle. So how could I possibly move it pushing Allen key down and shifting it!
This will work for certain types of windows but sadly not all.
What about if there's a casing that's over the mechanism so can't get the Alan key to hook on?
Is there anyway of getting anything under/in the casing? If not I'm sorry I can't help

DragonShotgun i have done a video on this somewhere. All i did was screw a cord into where the handle was and used it to pull the window closed. Not an ideal fix but worked temporarily. It should stop you getting frost bite lol. Where in the UK are you?
Thank for the quick reply, ahh tried that but it is a bedroom window and afraid if I pull it hard enough it will fall out because it looks like one side of the hinge is broken - it is +10 year old window I think the parts has rusty, probably needs to be replace by now. I live in London, started snowing in the area I haven't seen snow for awhile.
DragonShotgun maybe you could try cutting a bit of wood and some insulation to size just to cover the opening while its so cold. We are in wales and its the 3rd lot of snow we have had this year. If it gets any colder im affraid the chickens may be moved inside with us!! Good luck my friend
Currently the gap is filled with some Sponge Tape which I bought and some old clothes and lots of tape. Ah Wales must be worst there, I think the bad weather will last few days hope your chickens dont get too cosy inside ! Good luck to you too
DragonShotgun you have pretty much done what i would do. Just save for a window or make something. If yoy need a hand just send me a message/email. If the chickens start to enjoy the heat i will show them the oven ;)
So how do I close back the window????
MY window lock is shuck and l have mannered the vise grips and it will not open what will l do next ?

What happens if the seal isn’t removable?
Try and get something under it. Basically the reason it's romoved is to allow access to the latch.
Wouldn't it have been easier to just buy a new handle, fit it, and then open the window that way?
No because the whole issue with the window was the mechanism was locked shut. That's how the handle got snapped off in the first place
