I'm a native of Denver, I grew up Northeast Denver (Lafayette St)and a 1989 graduate of Montbello High School. I grew up going to Juneteenth and took my daughter to Juneteenth every year when she was little. I remember when there was NO light rail running through Welton St and the community was stronger, but the Black History in Denver is still relevant! Thank you for sharing your travels to Denver!

Genetics the separation of pairs of alleles at meiosis and their independent transmission via separate gametes.
My grandmother is featured in this video. She is sitting at the table with the cigarette with her friends. She passed away in 2009 in Denver, Co. My mother's father had a record store in the 5 Points off Welton st. 'Salmen Records'. Thank you! God bless
I grew up in Park hill, born and raised, I loved that you are adding Colorado to your adventure, so glad that you are representing the five points, very important park of our history, and the red lining the black folks had to experience, and how it has been gentrificated all through the neighborhoods.
I was born in Brooklyn, New York and raised there. Moving to Denver is an eye-opener for me and my family and the beautiful mountains that I never even thought about Black people living in Colorado. Thank you for sharing black culture and history of Colorado.
Born in Chicago, raised in the Five Points area. Denver is HOME to me. When you showed the montage of black businesses on the Points, I was having flashbacks as a child going in them during the 50s and 60s. I was hollering with joy, back down memory lane. I no longer live in Denver, this was simply wonderful and thank you so much.
Oh wow! That means a lot to us that we were able to bring back those wonderful memories for you. Denver’s Five Points History is definitely a story that should be shared more. Thanks a lot for watching!

I'm from Denver. My dad was a major businessman in 5 points you showed his old shop several times in the vid. My uncle was a plaintiff in the original case to de-segregation the Denver public schools. As a young black musician, I played several of the Black clubs before they were gentrification. You put out a lot of great info. a lot of black folks, new to the city. don't get because many move to the burbs and never even find the"hood". they don't learn about the city. It was a great place to grow up in the 60's. A small ( by Eastern standards) but vibrant, safe, positive black community. Great concrpt for a youtube channel. Keep up the good work!
Right on! It means a lot getting props on our video from someone who not only lived the Black History we shared about the city, but also comes from a family that contributed to that history. Thanks for watching!
You totally nailed it. As a Denver native I am always surprised when black friends don't know about 5 points area, Montbello, Park Hill and Aurora and the rich black history of those cities.
Montbello and Park Hill should be covered. I'm not Black, but I grew up around there before a lot of the gentrification. I love this city and I'm glad you're covering the history that's been erased🙏
Right on! Yes we didn’t even get hip to Montbello or Park Hill until people commented about them on this video. It sounds interesting and we definitely are going to check them out on our next visit. Thanks a for watching!
I'm a Native of Denver Eastside and I'm 3rd Generation. My family has been here for over 100 years. It was cool to see y'all travel and speak on it. The 70's and 80's were really cultural. Gentrification destroyed that starting in the late 90's. Denver is turning into Central America now. I didn't know about the two Black owned spots. I'm going to check them out.
I live Terry Gentry. I used to volunteer at the Black American West Museum. So glad you all got to learn and experience the rich black hiatory of Denver.
Wow! Yes we love Terri she was a great resource and we were lucky to have met her. We going to definitely check the museum out on our next visit. Thanks for watching!

I LOVE THIS!!! I sit somewhere super central downtown next to the South Platte/LoHi/RiNo/5 Points. You painted a beautiful picture of these Denver Gems. As an StL Native till a permanent move in ‘09, I still struggle to love that long, straight shot from Colfax back to The Lou to see Fam; but I appreciate you both taking the time to make & share meaningful stops that more people should have the opportunity to consider, ponder & appreciate. Some of these spots for years have left me happy, grateful, well fed and even less homesick at times. This was beautifully done. I hope you do more for CO. It’s getting better, but there’s so much more BA Black history to Colorado that I’m still loving & learning about and it deserves so much more recognition and awareness. We have family in Aurora but we’ve never been to Montbello, but a lot of folks are telling us that it too had a large Black community. Thanks for watching supporting!

Wow! It really means a lot when someone living in the city appreciates our perspective. We definitely enjoyed our time there and can’t wait to come back. Thanks for watching!
I love this!!! I live in Denver and and moved here from New York buffalo to be exact! Thank you for sharing this about the black community here!! I’ve been looking for things JUST like this!! Thank you!! Just gained a subscriber!!
It's cool you guys do this! Most black people don't travel to these cities like this. I travel and am working on a food and travel channel myself. It's cool to see what's in states like Washington, Utah or Colorado. It's the final frontier! I love being nomadic and could never go back to living in a house, working the same job and living that American dream boring life. Traveling stimulates me and gives me a reason to be excited about life again!
Right on @seanivery! Yes to everything you said about Travel. The last two episodes of this series will really showcase some cities not high on Black travelers usual destinations (tbh two places not high on the list for most travelers). Good luck on your channel (make sure you drop us your channel name so we can subscribe). Thanks for watching and safe travels!
Right on! Yes there is a lot there that we didn’t even touch on. Hopefully you can check out the places we showed in the video too. Either way we know that you will have a great time. Thanks for watching!
Yes that is true. Aurora is where our family lives. But we had no idea about the Jazz Festival, we must have missed our fam mentioning it throughout the years 😂. It would be cool for us to go back and check it out one day. Thanks for the plug on the Aurora Jazz festival and for watching!
YES! Aaaaand Common showed up the last night at Levitt right after the Jazz Fest in 5 Points this year!!! I haven’t made it to the WP one, but I want to it never seems to disappoint & I’m still kicking myself for missing Maxwell.
Great Video. I use to live in Denver and still have relatives and friends there. My uncle was the first one to reside in Colorado right after WW2 which started a chain migration of other relatives. Colorado has a rich and interesting history of black Americans going back to the 1800s.
Right on! On this road trip we were amazed to learn how much Black Pioneers have contributed to this country’s settlement in the mountain west states, and also realizing how the military has always been a huge contributor to Black migration to the west (Buffalo Soldiers to Present). Thanks a lot for watching!
@TravelingWhileBlack1 you will love it - only an hour from Denver, very mountainous and higher elevation. Big military town. Black people sprinkled throughout.
Right on @MsColetha! We are glad it could be of some value to you. We hope you check out our others videos for some other ideas of places to visit if your looking for unique getaways. Thanks for watching!
The statement that you made about why Denver is called the mile high city, is because on Broadway where the capital is the elevation is 5280ft above sea level there is a sign that Marks exactly where it is a 5280ft which is a mile
I left Denver , where I was born and lived over 45 years. I'm mestizo, grew up in West Denver (ripped apart by gentrification). Thanks for reminding me of the rich heritages and blending of cultures our city had, even through segregation.😂
I’m from Milwaukee and now live in DC. I have traveled all over the world and, until recently, the one constant I would hear is, “There are black people in Milwaukee?” Not only are there black people there, it is the largest minority population in the city. I often feel a kindred spirit with black communities in cities outside of New York, L.A., etc. I know that we’re everywhere. Pretty much anyplace you’ve ever heard of has a rich black history. Let’s keep lifting each other up ✊🏾
I absolutely love this, and as a black Colorado native, but I think you were generous to give Denver a 7 for parking 😁. However, I love my state and I love Denver. There are a lot of beautiful and amazing places to see and go with Red Rocks being one of my favorites. Hopefully on your next trip you can experience a great concert there.
Made the drive from Florida to Denver twice. Can unequivocally say the roughest stretch was through Kansas. That being said, thanks for exposing me to some must see stops for the next time I drive through!
Up until I went to college in Illinois in the year 2000 people asked “there are black people in Denver?” with genuine surprise. It’s funny. The Air Force brought my parents to Denver from Chicago in the late 70s. All their children were born here. If it’s only 8%now I bet the percentage of black people 30-40+years ago was even lower. I grew up in Montbello.
Its so crazy that we was celebrating Juneteenth in the early early 80's in Denver! Lol! Now they act like they just "discovered" it! Lol! 5 points...city park! 😃 Back in thee day! 💪🏽 #parkhillstandup🤪
This is really nice to see because they've ALREADY LOST that neighborhood due to gentrification and uprising cost, SHOVING black businesses out, NOT creating more opportunities. If so, ITS FOR NON- BLACK PEOPLE, and THAT is the truth! 😏 #classdissmissed 🫳🏾🎤 #beblessed 🙏🏾💜
Yes that’s what it seemed like unfortunately. But hopefully there can be a revived effort to try and make it not be the case. Would hate to see our history be just a past relic within. Thanks for watching!
I was so surprised to see someone of color actually interested and making notes of what Colorado has for the black community! And the History of what was here before gentrification. Thank You. Both I really enjoyed your observation and report.
I believe Denver and Colorado Springs was part of the Chitterling Circuit both city had all black venues that black people work on their way to California in the Springs they talk about the Cotton Club and all the black paraformers who came thought most stationed there like Flip Wilson Bill Cosby Richard Pryor Red Foxx and many others
Wow had no idea Colorado Springs was included. We’d like to check that city out next time we’re in Colorado. Before going on this road trip we did not realize the large contribution to Jazz culture that Kansas City and Denver had. Thanks for watching!
@@TravelingWhileBlack1 That's the city of BlacKKKlansman also military town Black we would settle there after they get out the Military also I heard of a black community in Lincoln Nebraska some with roots from KC
I very much enjoyed this video because it comes with useful information, and my comfortability with both your personalities ranks high! 😂😂 I am a Denver native who moved to Los Angeles for 25 years and came back to Denver about four years ago. I am happy to be back, and glad that you visited our city, and highlighted our historical relevance here. I remember growing up we would frequently hear my dad and his brothers saying " We're running over to the Five Points!" It is a vivid memory that still rings in my ears! I will definitely check out more of your videos!
😂 Thanks a lot! It’s always a good sign for a place when people move back. Thanks again for your kind words and of course for watching. We hope you enjoy the rest of our channel and find inspiration for your next trip.
The Black neighborhoods in Denver were wiped out. Denver was sweet in the '70s and '80s. The Black neighborhoods got cracked out in the late 80s and 90s and a lot of Black people went to prison. Denver got gentrified under Freemason Black Mayors in the 90s and there is not one Black neighborhood left. Denver Blacks are strange.
@roddanlives2650 it’s interesting how on our road trip we see the same cycle when it comes to the historic Black neighborhoods (industry influenced migration > redlining > crack epidemic > gentrification) yet still we rose / still we rise.
@TravelingWhileBlack1 This is such a poignant observation. We have always strove to have community and financial independence and when we do it is destroyed. Blight has been used to destroy Black strongholds across America for decades. Such a great video. I love your series and have been here from the beginning!

I went to college in Denver back in 2000, and then moved back for a job from 2017-2022. You guys are being too generous LOL. The Black American West History Museum is great. Also did you know that Madame CJ Walker lived not too far from Five Points for a little bit, although her residence isn't marked. The. klan history in Denver runs deep......and I wonder if that's why there is not the feeling of inclusiveness. Denver has has TWO black mayors, Welllington Webb, and Mike Hancock. However, it feels like the only time you see black foks out en masse was during Jazz Fest and the Juneteenth festival. And Iived about 6 blocks from Five Points and barely saw black folks out and about. Weird place! My best advice for folks visiting is to head straight to the mountains, the food in Denver is terrible and the city overall lacks culture.but the access to the Rockies can't be beat.
@@TravelingWhileBlack1 there’s good people here but the good/evil ratio is the worst I’ve experienced. They are insidious and perfidious. I’ve lived in So. Cal and the mid Atlantic area as well as overseas. If you stay more downtown it’s okay but head to the east of Powers it gets clany. I live in a newer neighborhood and have several black neighbors who probably relocated here as well. Across the street to the older part, there were people who flew the confederate flag and harassed a neighbor’s black partner. Look up El Paso county black ranchers for a sick story. A lot of people are afraid to trust strangers, again compared to where I’ve been, and you may visit and have a good time. Safe travels
Kind of native too … 30 plus years make me but more Coloradan then from Denver… never lived in Denver city … looks like our African American mothers stopped teaching their kids ? Be good and don’t steal… I am in a jewelry business… I hope you understand where I am coming from…
So many spots that I would move to but we can’t just keep letting the cops or any other Caucasian mob just harm us for no reason. I thought about Denver and Portland before but I like to avoid states with high rates of police aggression and near by sun down towns. I’m sick of feeling like I have to be carful about where to go in our own land.
I am a Colorado native, and Denver, at one point, did have a thriving black community. I would've never equated it to Harlem by any stretch of my imagination though. Now, all Colorado has is black history. It's not a place where the black community is thriving in any longer, IMO. Most of the blacks here treat each other terribly, especially the black women.
I very much enjoy your show and Hope you guys continue the good work period but please please please please change the wording of traveling wild black . you are not a color crayon. you are a nationality a true American a moor , Indian Or a tribe. When we use the term black we legally take away our inheritance.
That is wild to compare a kind of descriptive terminology to a simple crayon that didn't choose to be black but to become one of the most important of all color crayons. The base, the foundation upon which to build. America owes reparations, not an inheritance as if we are all Sally Hemmings's illegitimate offspring of Thomas Jefferson. When we use "Black" we honor the American slave, not the indentured servant pretending to be the family of an oppressor.
I am from North East Denver (Montbello), which used to be a largely Black community. Right on for covering my city 💪🏾
Thanks a lot for watching! We need to check out more on Montbello. You are the ump-tenth person that said they grew up there.
@@TravelingWhileBlack1 I still live there connect with me

ADOS history is not BIPOC history FACT!!!
Denver is such a beautiful city, and I plan to tour in the near future. Thank you for the video 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🤎🤎🤎🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Right on! Yes there is a lot there that we didn’t even touch on. Hopefully you can check out the places we showed in the video too. Either way we know that you will have a great time. Thanks for watching!
Aurora Colorado has a lot of black people as well; also there is an amazing Jazz Festival in Winter Park annually
Yes that is true. Aurora is where our family lives. But we had no idea about the Jazz Festival, we must have missed our fam mentioning it throughout the years 😂. It would be cool for us to go back and check it out one day. Thanks for the plug on the Aurora Jazz festival and for watching!
Thanks for replying. The jazz fest is a few hours away in Winter Park CO
Been in denver 20 years
I m a Chicagoan that lived in Colorado Springs for 8 years and visited Denver all the time. My best friend was born and raised in Denver.
That’s what’s up! We want to visit Colorado Springs one day. We hear it’s nice. Thanks for watching!
@TravelingWhileBlack1 you will love it - only an hour from Denver, very mountainous and higher elevation. Big military town. Black people sprinkled throughout.
I have been here for a short time and I appreciate this video to help me as I acclimate 🎉
Right on @MsColetha! We are glad it could be of some value to you. We hope you check out our others videos for some other ideas of places to visit if your looking for unique getaways. Thanks for watching!
The statement that you made about why Denver is called the mile high city, is because on Broadway where the capital is the elevation is 5280ft above sea level there is a sign that
Marks exactly where it is a 5280ft which is a mile
Right on!!! That fact was actually included in our first script draft but had to be cut due to this already going to long 😭 😂 Thanks for watching!
Let’s keep lifting each other up ✊🏾
Nice work guys, gonna be tuning in!
Right on @cantbeatthecool! We appreciate it. Thanks for watching.
Right on! Btw a concert at Red Rocks is actually one of my bucket list experiences. Thanks a lot for watching!
Made the drive from Florida to Denver twice. Can unequivocally say the roughest stretch was through Kansas. That being said, thanks for exposing me to some must see stops for the next time I drive through!
Right on! Yes definitely check them out. Thanks for watching!
Right on! It’s interesting how the military has influenced a lot of Black migration to the western states. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for featuring our beautiful city! We got it ALL. LeFrench DTC location is our favorite restaurant! Proud native here!
Glad I found your channel! Very inspiration. Great job!
Thank you for your support and watching!
Wow! great video I recognize some family members in this video
Thanks for the video here in Denver and ill check out five points area gratitude ❤
Great video. Totally enjoyed
Thanks for watching!
Love to see a great review of my hometown 🥰
I live in Cheyenne! Can’t wait to see what you think
Hey have you had a chance to check out our Cheyenne episode yet? We were curious to get your thoughts 😄
I'm not going watch to the end but great to see dope looking couple.
Its so crazy that we was celebrating Juneteenth in the early early 80's in Denver! Lol! Now they act like they just "discovered" it! Lol! 5 points...city park! 😃 Back in thee day! 💪🏽
#parkhillstandup🤪
😂😂😂
Yes park hill good times
This is really nice to see because they've ALREADY LOST that neighborhood due to gentrification and uprising cost, SHOVING black businesses out, NOT creating more opportunities. If so, ITS FOR NON- BLACK PEOPLE, and THAT is the truth! 😏
#classdissmissed 🫳🏾🎤
#beblessed 🙏🏾💜
Yes that’s what it seemed like unfortunately. But hopefully there can be a revived effort to try and make it not be the case. Would hate to see our history be just a past relic within. Thanks for watching!
Excellent video! Great content...very educational! I'm really enjoying this series! Thank you for sharing!😄
Right on! Thanks for watching!
Great video!
Thanks you. Thanks for watching!
Gabe!! 🙌🏽🙌🏽
Lets go Lincoln Hill!!!
💯 thanks for watching!
I was so surprised to see someone of color actually interested and making notes of what Colorado has for the black community! And the History of what was here before gentrification. Thank You. Both I really enjoyed your observation and report.
I enjoyed the content. Especially the fact you said Kansas City about a million times in this Denver video 😂
😂 our previous trip there must’ve had an impact lol. Thanks a lot for watching!
@@TravelingWhileBlack1 that's awesome I'm glad you were shown hospitality I watched it after watching this one.
Black power ✊🏾
✊🏾
There is no Black power in Denver.
@@roddanlives2650exactly blacks or hated in Denver
BLACK POWER! ❤️🖤💚
@@roddanlives2650 Mexican power she means
Great content !
Uncles lived there. Railroad after. Korean War. Black middle class ❤❤❤
I am from the East side in Denver. Which is now considered RiNo pre-gentrification
Welcome to D.C

Blacks born and raised in Denver are strange. They are so strange that I only befriended Blacks from other states.
@@TravelingWhileBlack1 There are too many homeless Black people too.
Much of what you said is true. The black political leadership has been pretty bad.
@TravelingWhileBlack1 This is such a poignant observation. We have always strove to have community and financial independence and when we do it is destroyed. Blight has been used to destroy Black strongholds across America for decades. Such a great video. I love your series and have been here from the beginning!
noun: segregation; plural noun: segregations
1.
the action or state of setting someone or something apart from others.
"a model that perpetuates the segregation of older people"
the enforced separation of different racial groups in a country, community, or establishment.
"an official policy of racial segregation"
2.
Genetics
the separation of pairs of alleles at meiosis and their independent transmission via separate gametes.
Wow! Right on thanks for all that dope insight. We will definitely be back. Thanks for watching!
❤
Watch out for Colorado Springs or I should say be careful. Unfortunately some very closed, cult minded groups call it their home
Right on! Thanks for the heads up. We were actually considering Colorado Springs as one of the stops on our return trip to Colorado.
Try boulder. University area.
Denver is ok in some part. It needs a face lift especially in the downtown area.
Can’t argue with that. Unfortunately that seems to be the case for a lot of downtowns across America. Thanks for watching!

Most of the blacks here treat each other terribly, especially the black women.
oh yeah all the Black people moved away in the 90s
Wow! Lol! I did! Lol! 🤦🏾

I very much enjoy your show and Hope you guys continue the good work period but please please please please change the wording of traveling wild black . you are not a color crayon. you are a nationality a true American a moor , Indian Or a tribe. When we use the term black we legally take away our inheritance.
Thanks @herudevinvi2861 we appreciate your perspective. And thanks for watching!
Tru indeed. Talk to them. 🤎🪶
if yall come backkkk, please try the food trucks!! ppl swear we have bad food
Yall do!
