    Anyone wanting to make an automotive how-to video should watch this one and study it. This is a master class in how to make a video with the perfect amount of detail, explanation, length, and camera work. This is so helpful. Sincere thanks!

    Thanks for the video - I depressurized the fuel system by cranking the engine for a few seconds after disconnecting the electric connectors to the fuel pump, but before removing the fuel lines. 0 leaks or spray. The video was perfectly accurate and very helpful. It was a little bit more challenging for me to get the fuel strainer onto the fuel pump, but it might have just been a snug part that I got. Thanks again!

    Million thanks for the video. You saved me hundreds of dollars and the replacement is super simple. I opted to replace the float switch while I was in there as well. I completed the entire replacement in about a hour including seat removal. It was not necessary to remove the passenger side rear seat, just folded it forward and there was room to hold the carpet out of the way. Definitely one should depressurize the fuel system first, much more fuel came out of the pressure side than I expected. Had it covered with a rag, but still made an unnecessary smell/mess. Again, fantastic, spot on video. Thank you so much.

    all good just mention 1 safety rules with this job . 1. Make sure that you disconnect the battery first as a must! I can here the ding ding in the background just remember and small electrical spark and you will fly . do this when the fuel is very low . plus in addition DO NOT use any power tool around the open gas tank like drill even the brush-less one as they "brush motors" will create a spark for sure! be safe

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  6 років тому +2

      Sergo Pedro Khoch Thanks for the heads up. I do this everyday and sometime forget to mention things like the fuel level. I don’t worry about unhooking the battery on fuel pumps even though most manufacturers recommend it in the service manual. I just make sure the key is off and then unplug the pump. I prefer the fuel tank to be 3/4th or below just so the fuel isn’t at the top of the tank. Fire hazard might be higher with a full fuel tank but I think explosion hazard is higher on a low tank because of the concentration of fuel vapor in the empty tank. Not for sure about it just something that rings a bell from past readings. Thanks for watching and contributing.

      ThePracticalMechanic I'm actually looking for buying a highly reliable, spacious, safe, comfortable 6+ seater vehicle for family. Zeroed in on Toyota Alphard executive chair 3.0 3.5 ltr petrol mpv and Lexus lx470 (land cruiser 100 with nicer features). Not able to decide which one is better and if 10 15 year old vehicles are suitable or they will have troubles. I'm happy to invest in replacement of fuel water pump batteries belts etc to keep it in ship shape. Or will old cars always be a slippery slope and one doesn't know what fails next? Any opinions?
      Btw in UK land cruiser 3.0 ltr diesels are more popular but if the engine 10 15 years old, I'm thinking I should go for only petrol.

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  6 років тому +1

      Since we don’t get the Toyota diesels in the States I am not very familiar with their reliability or repair cost. The LX470 in the video has approximately 180000 and has some rust on the under carriage. The rust along with the age has caused rattles in the suspension and rear air conditioning line has a small leak from corrosion as well. The rear seats have limited leg room so a child would fit most comfortably. If possible I would find one that has been well maintained and has good records. Also the fuel consumption is terrible on the petrol 4.7 liter engine. I get 11-12 mpg with mixed city/highway driving.

    • @securemaple
      @securemaple 6 років тому +1

      ThePracticalMechanic thanks for the comments. I keep looking as I'm not in a rush to decide. Current seven seater Honda is ok, automatic, four wheel drive, chain and sporty. Market in quite muddy since dieselgate. So far I've always been with petrol vehicles.
      True the mpg on lx470 is atrocious, hoping it compensates for it with features and ride comfort. My first challenge is to find the vehicle as in autotrader uk you find none. Japanese import seems only option..and they can be well maintained I hear.

    On my 2000 land cruiser, the rubber hose came off of the fuel pump itself, on its own. Vibrations or sweet jumps must have done it. It would crank all day long but wouldn't fire because of it. Dumb issue, but that's what did it for me

    I have a gauge that is slow to show full.
    Takes it a solid 15 minutes to creep up to the true fuel level.
    I was thinking of cleaning the float sensor with some deoxit or something
    Thoughts?

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  4 роки тому

      It’s possible that the gauge in the dash is slow also. My 95 Toyota pickup take about 10 minutes for the gauge to rise completely. One way to check would to measure the resistance of the sending unit while it’s still installed in the tank with low fuel and the fill up and measure again. If the reading responds slowly then it’s probably a slow sender like your thinking of the reading changes quickly and the gauge doesn’t register that change then it’s probably in the gauge. They make the gauges slow on some vehicles so the needle doesn’t bounce when you accelerate and decelerate.

    How should I know when pump need to be changed?

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  4 роки тому +1

      Grigor Tangyan if the pressure is low when checked with a fuel pressure gauge. Mine had low power and a long crank time when hot also. Some will change it just to prevent future breakdowns but make sure you use a quality denso or oem pump. Other pump brands may be more unreliable than the high mileage pump currently installed.

      I’d you already have the the access cover off you you can just unplug the pump and try to start the engine up a few times. The pump won’t be able to run and the system will depressurize.

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  4 роки тому

      Paul Allen once you have the access panel off you can in plug the pump and then start the vehicle until
      It stalls. Crank it a few more times and the pressure will be low or even completely gone.

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  6 років тому

      So when you try to start the car it just cranks over but doesn’t start up? There is a good chance that the fuel pump has failed but there are a few other thing that could cause it as well. Sorry this might be a long post but hang in there. You mentioned the fuel gauge doesn’t work. I know it seems like a basic question but does it fuel? Also do you have access to a code reader? A camshaft position sensor or crankshaft position sensor problem could also cause a no-start. My brothers Lexus lx470 had a no start and it turned out to be a damaged wire on the camshaft sensor. This sensor is inside the timing cover on the engine but the wire exit the cover and are routed very near the serpentine belt and if not secured the belt will rub through the wires. If the timing belt breaks the engine won’t start and might sound like you describe on ETCGs video. I would recommend checking fuel pressure but Toyota’s don’t have a test port and you have to have special adaptors. You could try tapping on the tank with a rubber mallet while someone cranks the engine. If the pump is bad this will sometimes let the engine try and start. You could try and listen for the pump to run while someone turns the key on and then cranks over the engine. Also if the gauge doesn’t work you may also need to replace the fuel level sending unit while you have it apart. Hope some of that help and makes some since. Been up since 4am and it’s 10pm now so what makes since to me may not translate clearly. Let me know if you have additional question or need advice in other testing or if you have any results from the tests listed above. Thanks for dropping by.

      @@ThePracticalMechanic thank you very much for your detailed response. The problem seemed to have started after I replaced the starter. During the disassembly of the manifold intake (needed to remove to replace starter) I damaged some wiring plastic snap-fits. I should probably go back and check those. The vehicle starts just fine for the rest of the day. The first start is always the one that causes the problem.

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  6 років тому

      Any check engine lights? Hmmm... definitely check around the intake for loose connections and hoses. The camshaft sensor harness has a small clip that holds the wire away from the serp belt. If it wasn’t clipped in check for run marks on the wires. The next time you start it try cycling the key from off to on a few times before actually cranking it. If that makes it start easier then the fuel pressure might be leaking back to the tank or into the engine over night and then the pressure has to build back up before the engine will start. Does it run rough when it does start up?
