    How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a UA-cam channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin. Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like. These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
    How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

    i loved how technical a simple concept of 'break up corn stalks' has so much complexity to avoid excessive tilling and effective break down of organic material.

    Great vid. Cool to see how you go through the set up process and cool to get an "up close" run down on the VT Question: How would having a chopping corn head on the combine affect the need to VT the ground after harvest? Is there any need to VT the bean ground, or is that residue already so small as to not require a post harvest pass with the VT?

    We have landoll disk and a landoll vt and they have the same exact depth control and gauge wheels and they both level with a hydraulic cylinder on the hitch. only difference is the disks aren’t dished as much and are closer together and gangs are more straight and has rolling baskets on the vt. And the disk has harrows.

    Ryan Watching your VT video I was reminded of my father's old single disc. (as opposed to a modern "tandem" disc.) You pulled a rope and released a catch then pulled ahead slow and that "V'd" the disc. When done, for transport, you pulled the rope and backed up to straighten it. This was also a 3 or 4 way control for discing stalks or plowing. The hydraulics on your VT must do the same thing? Good video!

    I wonder if it was set to drift or oscillate side to side ever so slightly as to make wavey rows if it would grind up the stalks more aggressively?

  • @peteparker7396
    @peteparker7396 2 роки тому

    You also want to run at a slight angle and not the same direction as it was planted or chiseled every time. You are right it’s a great sizing tool. And by the looks of those coulters it’s about time to replace the front gangs.

    In central europe, we don't have the nolidge of a vt. I have worked with a disk. We have it in the 3point, on a 250hp newholland. Its not bigger than 3meters. It works really great. Jo

  • @rtz549
    @rtz549 2 роки тому

    When your discs get worn down to about the point of replacement; if you took a grinder and added more serrations; would that make the discs more aggressive?

    So are you using this basically in place of a field cultivator? Seems like many other farmers are using field cultivator’s in your region. Just curious if you made a choice to do this over that.

    • @markam306
      @markam306 Рік тому

      Craig,
      Field cultivators, offset discs, and moldboard plows are notorious for creating compaction layers just below their tillage depth. VT implements endeavor to avoid compaction by using a 0 degree gang angle. Blade goes straight in, comes straight out, no sideways smearing of soil beneath the colters. Many farms want more tillage than 0 deg VT provides, so many implements have migrated to variable gang angles. Tillage continues to evolve.

    Hey Ryan, Kind of cruise about other Farms that don't use the VT or do, In your area how many other Farms use the VT?, Reason I ask is this. I watch a lot of Farm video's and Your Family is the only ones I see Using the VT. So is it because the VT is that expensive or Just not worth the time to other Farms? I agree that it does a fine job of soil prep, But just makes me wonder what other farms are missing out on. And yes I know you can't speak for other Farms.

  • @rtz549
    @rtz549 2 роки тому

    Ever think about taking a box blade and dragging the tops of steep hills off and mellowing them out? How far down can you dig before you encounter rock? How far down is the bedrock in your area?

    • @markam306
      @markam306 Рік тому

      Bedrock is not the main concern, subsoil is not as productive as topsoil. Depth varies widely with location.
