- I'll show you how to easily change the engine oil and oil filter on your (2005-2010 WK) 3.7L V6 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Don't pay the Dealer for something this simple. Watch this video to save some money and feel accomplished.
Oil Used: Royal Purple 5W-20 Synthetic (5 Quarts) - tinyurl.com/y7...
Oil Filter Used: K&N HP-2009 - tinyurl.com/y9...
Optional Oil Filter: Mobil 1 M1-209 - tinyurl.com/y8...
Oil Change w/ Filter Interval: 6,000 miles
Performed on MY 2008 - Laredo 4x4
After you finish these steps and start your WK, make sure you check the drain plug and oil filter housing areas for any leaks.

Oil plug size??
Royal purple is what's up! I have a 2007 3.7 and I run R.P in motor/transmission/differential fluid. Runs Damn good. I use to run Mobil 1 and still could feel the shifts but not anymore. Strongly suggest!
I've used a K&N filter for at least 5 oil changes and have no complaints.
What’s size was that plug ?
can you tell me what size bolt is on the bottom of the truck?
The oil pan contains all the oil except for that which is in the oil filter. If done the way you suggest by draining the oil first, you'll still have oil in the oil filter. It really doesn't matter if you change the oil filter before or after you drain the oil - No old oil is going to get into the new oil filter if you change it out first.
ever have problems with the filter adapter/block seal leaking?? Heard it's a pita.
It's Royal Purple - dyed purple. The dye that’s used to color the oil dissipates shortly after being put into service.
Nice video. I'm looking at getting a slightly used (abused) GC 3.7. The V8's in my fleet won't allow me to change the filter without going under the vehicle. As I don't need the towing capacity anymore I can afford to retire one of the V8's. I only hand tighten oil filters on my vehicles. I almost always need a wrench to take them off.
No complaints. It's good oil and you can usually find the required grade cheapest online at clubrsx.
Gotta change mines soon and should I stick w 5w20 or 5w30 for the upcoming summer heatwave here in Vegas?
Would love if ya just mentioned the socket size, im lazy lol

That was exactly my thought, drain oi first than take off oil filter...less of a mess. other than that nice video.
Is the oil drain plug in the front or the back
@jayguy173 Not everyone "works in a shop" and has massive forearms from installing oil filters on a daily basis. I've never had an issue with threads or the gasket. What may look tight to you in this video could very well be the same amount of torque that your forearm supplies.
How can I make it faster?
WOULDN'T IT be better to drain the oil out then take out the Oil Filter last?
No, draining the oil first won't make any less come out of the filter area.
Be less of a mess of having oil pour out of the filter and down to the oil pan. Less mess on the floor possibly.
The same amount of oil comes out of the oil filter regardless. You cannot minimize how much oil comes out of the oil filter by draining from the oil pan first.
Beside royal purple, what other oil would you all recommend?
yeah to kinda add on does your oil come out any cleaner since switching to k&n oil filter?
I would like to know how your experience has been with using royal purple ?
Not to fall off of topic but do you know how to remove the Dealer only cap for transmission fluid? i'm trying to add some transmission fluid.
Es aceite sintético?
Yes
What torque wrench does it take? 1/2 inch?
do you find the k&N brand oil filter is better than the royal purple oil filter? or is there not much of a difference, personally i've been using nothing but oil purple filters with my 2002 gts toyota celica.
@STFpolice1 2/3 of a turn doesn't seem like that much. I've personally never had a problem with any oil filters with how much I tighten them and we are talking roughly 100 oil changes. It might look like it's really tight, but chances are my forearms aren't all that strong.
Is your Jeep AWD??? I just bought one and courious how it performs and if there's anything I should look out for as far as maintenance
mannn ive been checking out your videos for a while now since i have a 06 wk v6 im running mobile 1 oil and filter i was wondering what other mods have you done besides your aftermarket wheels and tires?
Some other mods I've done include:
SpiderTrax 1.5" Spacers at all corners
Royal Purple Gear Oil in front & rear differentials
Stubby Black AM/FM Antenna
Factory Remote Starter Install
Factory Tow Hitch & Wiring Harness Install with Painted Cutout Bumper & Trim
And the K&N and Big Bore Throttle Body you already know about.
Ive done the stubby antenna also may I ask what do you mean oil in the front and rear differentials? Can't wait to get my tb in December
sweet vid! im changing my oil soon and was wondering if I should use a mobil 1 oil filter or a k&n? any opinions?
also thinking about using mobil 1 5w-20 but ive always wanted to try royal purple. how has rp been treating your cars? thanks!
I been adding new oil n new filter into old oil ! What to do ????
It's not necessary if your body is small enough to contort itself under for the drain plug. Otherwise, your easiest bet is to just roll it up onto ramps.
Nice vid! How do you turn off the light?
Thank you. You'll want to check out my other video to turn of the oil service light - HOW TO: Jeep Grand Cherokee - Oil Change Interval Reset (2005-2010 WK) ua-cam.com/video/kiuNZGneTr4/v-deo.html
what brand rims are those? I just picked up my GC last weekend
+Sean Gillen Cragar Soft 8
+Dungeon Motorsport thanks a ton.
Actually one more question, what tires are you running on it and do they rub?
+Sean Gillen They will rub without a lift. And you need a minimum of a 1/4" spacer up front to clear the brake calipers. I run 1.5" SpiderTrax spacers all around and a 2" OME HD Lift with minimal rubbing in the front. Tires are P255/70R-17 Michelin LTX M/S2
do I need to replace the gasket on the drain plug?
only if its shot. i have to change the gasket after about 5 oil changes usually
Did you have to lift the car?
Alex Z no the car is high enough so that you don’t have to. Only if your car is lower
@STFpolice1 Thanks for your input. Like I said before, I've had zero issues with how much I tighten it. I also don't use cheap oil filters.
@dungeonmotorsport 2/3 turn will meet and exceed the oil pressure capacity the filter is meant hold. As i remember that's over 300psi. your oil pressure will never get anywhere near half of that to draw on that seal capacity. These things have been engineered to realize specified criteria and objectives. not for every Joe, dick and harry to give their opinion on it.
Diy crew right here lol
@jayguy173 Can you make a video?
Dam that's some expensive recycled oil lol. putting some royal purple in my truck today
@bonecracker1123 As for the filters, I've used both without issue. You can see me taking off a Mobil 1 and putting on a K&N. The only thing I can say is that I've used about (6) Mobil 1 filters and only this one K&N that you see me putting on. The K&N has roughly 4,000 miles on it right now.
I've used Mobil 1 Oil in the past, but decided to switch to Royal Purple. I've sent Blackstone Labs samples for both and results were slightly better (more life left) w/ RP than they were w/ Mobil 1.
@dungeonmotorsport
thanks! ill try rp out!
Mobil 1.
you tighten your oil filter too much you can damage your O ring doing that. you are just ment to turn it 2/3 of a turn once the O ring makings contact with the mating surface.
Man I wish royal purple was cheap ...lol recycled oil
