I like how this is an old school built layout with very detailed structures and hard shell landscapes . These techniques are still here today and I used them in the 80's also...nice video.

Thank you, Dale and Karyn, for letting us see Harry Brunk's amazing railroad. I've always loved the Clear Creek area just outside Golden, Colorado. I also had many hours of fun reading and dreaming about the area through Harry's articles in the Narrow Gauge Gazette.

Dale and Karen, you have the best videos on all railway’s. I claim to be a model railroader, but every time I put together a layout someone comes by to enjoy it and ask, would I be interested in selling it. Well if I can get anyone interested in the railroad hobby and make a friend, then it’s for sale.

We keep seeing video of OUTSTANDING railroads across the pond. Saw one just last night on the Science Channel. A steam rack rail in Wales. The summit is at 1100 meters. GEEEEEEE! Being a westerner I feel a decent hill is at least 10,000 feet. 14,000 and I'm impressed. No matter. What a great rack rail!!

I have seen this layout in person in Cheyenne. SWEET LAYOUT!! My friend help move and restore the layout and that was a lot of work!! Harry published the plans for the buildings he made. My friend and I have built many of the buildings for the Railworks (a computer train simulator) Clear Creek route which we have extensively modified with more work to be done. We use the Sketchup 3D program.

My response seems to evaporated! Not surprising. Anyway what it said is there is an upside and a huge downside to legalize and gambling to miss places. If they’re not careful they absolutely ruined these places. But it does keep cities like black hawk in central city from falling away to nothing for lack of money.

The other #71 in Blackhawk is from a Mexican Railroad and spent a good part of its life on display at Palmer Lake, CO. There's actually an article about its original railroad in one of the old Colorado Rail Annuals from the CRRM.

That is AWESOME!!! But...... Why not tell that locomotive's story?? About the Mexican railroad in which it ran on, and how it found it's way to Colorado. It's life on display at Palmer Lake, CO... Why it was there, and such. It's such a cool little engine!

  • @Mike-tg7dj

I realize that the UP wanted to use the new engines with the digital fill in the blank. You would think that they would have weathered the locomotives to look less new or like a toy. It still isn't chopped liver though.

When I was a kid, back in the '70s, #71 was "Stuffed and Mounted" at the end of track and the Ashbys were running the line with their old #40 (from Central America). When operations began on the Silver Plume Loop line, they moved their operations there, taking #40 with them. I think one of their old open cars is now up at the Como roundhouse restoration site.

If when UP finishes with 3985, maybe they can truck 71, 60, and 9 up to Cheyenne for rebuilding. They were UP property under UPD&G before they were CB&Q under C&S....so in a roundabout way restoring them would be UP heritage.

Harry Brunk's layout is awesome! I remember reading all the updates in Narrow Gauge Gazette.
The 71 ordeal is something suspicious. Someone or some group complained about them running the locomotive and that the operators were going to steal the locomotive or some such thing. And shut down the operation

I use to work at the Argo Gold Mill back in the 70's and 80's when Jim Maxwell owned it. Jim also owned the Hot Springs resort at Idaho Springs. We were tearing down the old cribbing and cleaning up the area around the Gold Mine back then, and sorta fixing up the actual building at the Argo.

They had an "idea" to open the tunnel and have a train to connect to the hotels at Black Hawk. Geeeee. What could go wrong? And what would that cost? Just a couple of comments for updates. The reason they stopped running the train near
BlackHawk was because of the casinos, they were afraid the vibration from it would cause damage to their buildings there. The railroad actually went on to Bakerville, which is is not far up I70 from SilverpLuke. The original plan of the UP (who had control on the Colorado Central at that time ) was to build a line to Leadville Co. And the loop was built. The UP eventually gained control of the Denver, South Park & Pacific which already had access to Leadville, through trackage rights through the Denver & Rio Grand, and the project was scraped. I think it would have been interesting to see just how the UP would have handled Loveland Pass. I thought, maybe a tunnel under the Pass then down through Arapahoe Basin righ through the ski area the natural grade through there isn’t that bad, and with a tunnel, you could avoid the worst of the summit. Snow sheds would definitely would be a must. If you have a chance, drive out of Blackhawk up to Navadaville, there are two structures standing there. The narrow gauge ran to a mill there. A lot of the streets around Central City are on the right of way of the Gilpin Tram which serviced some of the mines in the area. Just a little trivia.

    Hi guys! Great video!
I have some family that lived in Central City and when my parents would stop in I would head to the depot there. I have photos taken in the mid 1970’s of a shay just like your WestSide shay from the loop, even painted the same colors but was numbered 14 if I remember correctly. I believe Ashby owned the railroad operations there at that time too. Probably the same one you rode in the 80’s.
The railroad people knew me and I got to ride in the locomotive cab.
Anyway, I recently rode the loop and mentioned the Shay from CC with the different number and people weren’t familiar with it. In your travels, did you ever see a Shay in CC? Possibly a #14?
Thank you and have a great day!

I'm just an outsider looking in, but I love model railroads. The one thing that I always notice, however, when looking at overhead shots of towns, switch yards, etc., is the lack of color. In real life, life seems to take hold in every place possible. Weeds and grass grow everywhere it can, the sides of cliffs, ditches, any open areas with little or no traffic, etc., but in these models, you see large spaces of just dirt, with no weeds present. It makes for a very gray looking landscape, but when you look at real world photos of similar scenes, there is green everywhere. Just a tip for any modelers that are just getting into the hobby.

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  6 років тому

Really depends on the layout. Some are to colorful, some very bland. Take a look at Gil Bennett here on the channel. Very low in color, he's modeling mid November as he likes that look. But super real looking.

    • @royreynolds108
      @royreynolds108 5 років тому

Your point is well taken but consider the model railroad as to when it is modelled and the time of the year and where the location is supposed to be. Looking at photos of mining areas when the railroad was built the hills and mountains were denuded of trees for mine props, timbering, and other wood. It is interesting to view photos of the Georgetown Loop when built and varying years since as to the reestablishment of trees and other vegetation. This is interesting for any location where there are photos taken over many years.

Yes, I am so much more cool after seeing this! My last time in Golden was in 1985, way before anything got off the ground as it is now. The AT&SF obs car I road in from Albuquerque to Belin and back as a second grader in 1962 was there! That was also the same trip ('85) that I saw the Loop. It wasn't operational on the day I was there; but from the road up to Silver Plum, I got a good look of it. Never got to Central City or Blackhawk. Thanks for the warning. But, it's Colorado. The beauty is still there even if we humans continue to screw it up. That's why I chose it for the Rocky Mountain Division of the Pacific Crest Railway (formerly the St. Louis, North Park & Pacific Crest). Who would have ever dreamed the nation's sixth transcontinental would choose the Cashe La Poudre River Canyon to climb to cross the Back Bone of the World! It's crazy, but it's cool. A buddy of mine at the Museum and I FINALLY have some of it running in DCC. Hopefully y'all can come to the Golden Spike party. Don't start packing yet; it's going to be awhile off. Colorado wasn't built in a day.

Bobby Slater I was a mobile home dweller for about 35 years.. One of the mobile homes I lived in was old enough that it had the rounded ends! Another one was the vintage of the Detroiter mentioned here. These older homes were pre HUD, before the Department of Housing and Urban Development took over the mobile home business in 1976. Better building standards for mobile homes were established. Better construction, and egress windows.
My best guess on why the roof on this Detroiter began to cave in, was the removal of the interior walls, to accommodate the railroad layout. Mobile home roofs made from tin are known to develop leaks, and need to be sealed periodically. I’m betting those factors contributed to the demise of the. Home.. but thank goodness that layout was saved!
I’m hoping your mobile home is safe! They do make great affordable housing! I feel sad every time I see where another mobile home park is facing closure. Not everyone can afford a house!

Thanks for the info. Fortunately my mobile home is made by Vindale, which is considered top of the line. I do have the roof sealed every two years, but the land rent here has gone up to $800. My friend lives in a 3-bedroom high ranch and pays only $700.

Vindale is one of the best! Good solid construction. One of my favs in vintage mobile homes, is the Holly Park. One can usually spot them, as they have bay windows on the front and rear of the home. They also have the dormer clearstory windows in the living room area. They are longer.. like 14' x 75'/80 feet, and usually only have 2 bedrooms, which makes for a huge living room, and kitchen. These are some very well constructed homes for the era. (1973)
One of the mobile homes that I lived in was a 1968 Biltmore. Now.. talk about flimsy construction! When I learned that the home had aluminum wiring... Well? Anyway... Sold that! My most recent home was a 1986 Nashua.. 14 x 70... HUD approved... I called that home for the next 20 years, until Dale and i were married. I still love "trailers" or, mobile homes. Here in SLC... on State Street...and across from the Train Shoppe... there is an old vintage mobile home park (trailer park) that was established in the late 40's. All of the homes in there, are 60's and older. I remember that park when I was a kid, and we would visit Salt Lake. It's still there! But I often wonder for how long? The land is in a prime location.. Well.. I hope that trailer court stays... Ya know...

Mine has Anderson windows, but I'm sure they were added before I moved in. The front bay window was covered and converted to an alcove, which is where I display my collectibles. Since this park has been here since 1945 and the rent keeps going up, I'm sure it will be here for a long time.

YES. And get 71 going again. It runs! But no where to run it. I told them they should take it to Georgetown. But no one want these locos to leave, AND they have no railroad. And no place to build one.

Why did Narrow Guage Tender Engines have their fireboxes almost poking out of the rear of the cab?

    • @ToyManTelevision

To save space. Short is better in sharp curves. Sure makes them less comfortable to work in. But even small standard gauge locos did that. Check out "The Casey Jones" Tuesday. same layout.

Didn’t know. Sad. We will have a similar story this fall. Jim Harper has a buyer for his Proto 48 layout. The buyer also has an On3 layout that is also on this level of quality. So we want to follow the move and setup.

@@ToyManTelevision Thanks. Love your shows. I'm downloading most of them, especially the ones about history, places to go, and prototype and model railroading. Want to do a Toy Man Television video about standard gauge S scale? I'm in Manti. I'm retired Air Force, though I'm still self employed--I build harps. :) :) :) .

I could see the difference between the two 71's. on the original it easy to identify the air tanks on the top of the engine's boiler. I'm going out on a limb here in saying that the spark interrupters were no more than screens over the smoke stacks that prevented sparks from flying out. I would imagine sparks flying out would have a detrimental effect on the surrounding environment. Remember what Smokey the Bear says," Only you can prevent forest fires" or prairie fires. The one and assuming original had all of these articles where as the imposter didn't. It looked the have the spark inhibitor along with the number 71 but that was all it had. I'm guessing is some marketing genius came with that idea. I can just here it, " What if we bought an old narrow gauge engine like the one that represents the town paint the number 71 on it and place it outside the casino it would be a great draw bringing in the crowds!""It will like just like the historic 71!" Yeah a real marketing genius. For what its worth.

Marketing people all think they are a wit. And they are half right. The "fake" 71 is really a nifty little locomotive. Very much like a Rio Grande C-21. They could have even painted it as one of those. No idea what it really is or where they got it. Cuba? But giving it a fake C and S paint job..... stupid "idea".

Kind of wish you had spent much more time looking at every part of the model railroad, and had taken and included as many stills as you could of his models on display. you left far to much out.
