The sonnet form is old and full of dust And yet I want to learn to write one well. To learn new forms and grow is quite a must, But I will learn it quickly, I can tell. And so I sit, today, with pen in hand, Composing three new quatrains with a rhyme. The rhythm flows like wind at my command. The A-B-A-B form consumes my time. But I’m not done until there’s fourteen lines. One ending couplet, after three quatrains. I’ve tried to write this new form several times. The effort’s huge; I have to rack my brain. But I persist, my fourteen lines now done. I wrote my poem; my sonnet work is won.

Hi, thank you for the video. I am new to this, I am trying to count all the syllables you have used and trying to map that to iambic pentameter. Did you stick to the 10 syllables per line. It would be good to see it mapped out. Great video and sonnet.
Josie! I have benefited from your form videos. Today I wrote my first sonnet after months of trying to write in iambic pentameter. This is not a perfect sonnet, but it is purposely imperfect-- therefore perfectly imperfect :) I'm so proud of it and myself that I feel now that I'm indeed a poet. Thanks for your influence and your tips, they've culminated with other lessons that have resulted in this: my first sonnet: Sonnet I: My Inauguration In isolation, I wrote some “poetry” - an inner surge of pathos. Rhyming cringe ideas wrought from immaturity atop Mt. Dunning-Kruger. In pride, I’d binge my couplets meter-sans, cliched, and false inspired. Ignoring form, ignoring close enjoyment of other poets of whom I was not among- disconnected so. -But now, being haunted by the hand of Keats; and tortured by the tulips with Ms. Plath; and ribboned by Milton’s iambic feat; and taught of Emily - to tell it slant; With this heroic couplet, I now claim Today, through sonnet form, a poet's name.
Hi Josie. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I loved the word maps! I think it’s really gutsy of you to read your sonnet to the world at large. I think I can tell you’re not happy with it and I believe I know why. As you explained to us you can play around with the structural format of the sonnet but I think that you have to respect the emotional format. Humour and being tongue in cheek, to my mind, don’t work. So, go deep or go home. Sonnets work, in my opinion, when they have drama, passion and emotions, even grief. All the best!
Interesting take on emotions in a sonnet - I'm not sure I agree that they have to be deep though. I think my sonnet is bad for a myriad of other reasons - perhaps I should try re-writing it with a new perspective
I have to do a sonnet poem for my class because It due and my teacher is trying to explain it and he's horrible at showing us how to make on so thank you for helping us.!
Hey there could you Please write a short poem in Iambic Pentameter. Your poem must be at least 4 lines long ( you can go longer if you want to) and show the scansion.for my English class I’m very lost
