    Bo says... "I don't want to get into the technicalities because my small brain... *poof*" After starting to give a technical explanation. Lol He's being very humble. He's had extensive hands on experience with more newer synths and equipment than most people ever will have. Yet he's always down to earth and takes time to explain things without making anyone feel stupid. I enjoy all of your videos Bo!! I'm even binge watching all the older ones just to learn more. Keep them coming please. :)

    He y Bo... Greeting from the U.S. I love your channel... now that I got that out of the way, ;-) , This is your top three synths... What would it look like today if you were to re-do this list?
    Also, and most importantly to me, you mention "Hydrsynth" in the list below, as part of the text description of this video, but where does the hydrasynth fall with regards to the others?
    I've been eye-balling desktop synths, and the Hydrasynth seems to offer a lot for the money. While I did watch your review/first impressions video, I was wondering what thoughts that you have about it. Since you made the Hydrasynth Video several months after this one... I was just wondering where it might fall in the list now.

    Good to hear your thoughts on favourite synths BoBeats! The Novation Peak sounds lovely. The Minilogue XD is on my list, I'm using Diva for virtual analogue atm. =) But it's so much more fun to have hands on tactile control. Electron Rytm looks neat too. Hi Bo, would you say the synth by korg is a good beginner device? I am looking forward to get into synthesizers

    • @ToyKeeper
      @ToyKeeper 5 років тому

      The Korg Minilogue and Monologue are intended to be good beginner devices. Their waveform display is a nice way to help people understand the effect each knob has. However, they have some pretty distinct limits so it's not unusual to bump into the ceiling while using them. They're also not the only choice for a good beginner synth. Depending on personal taste and budget, one might also consider: Bass Station 2, Microbrute, Minibrute 2, Neutron, Grandmother, Sub Phatty, a Roland Boutique, Circuit Mono Station, DeepMind, MS-20 Mini, ... there are a bunch.

  • @spankenheim
    @spankenheim 5 років тому

    Nice to see some love for the Novation Peak. My two favorite synths are both digital/analog hybrids as well. The Peak (of course) and the Ambika (6 voice SMR4) both of them have an incredibly broad palette of sounds. They can go from cold and thin to incredibly warm, fat and "analog". My third favorite would be a tie between two virtual analogs: the King Korg and the Roland System 8. The Korg is a better gigging board and you can mix and match filters and oscillators from various legacy machines, and it sounds great. I use it as the controller for my Peak and I frequently mix them together for huge sounds. I like the System 8 because it fulfills my need for all of my old Roland stuff without the repair bills. I only wish they'd do a Jupiter 6 plug out because my JP6 is broken.

    I'll be in the market for a poly (mainly for pads and freaky sound design) when I've paid off my Digitakt. Has anyone got an XD+deepmind 12+peak? Is the XD versatile enough to justify £50 more than the 12? Is the peak a better than a 12+XD combo for about the same cost?

    • @phazerbrains

      ben1210
      I had a minilogue and monologue and I have a 12d.i also have a digitakt and I’m probably buying an xd. I would say after playing the prologue for a couple hours at a synth shop that the minilogue xd is a better intro into hands on synthesis. If you are looking for low end smooth sounds though the minilogue is probably a risky choice. The Deepmind, reface cs, and modal skulpt all have the low end organic sounding lush smooth sound. It’s really about what kind of music you make. I use my Deepmind and used my minilogue with my digitakt quite easily. I think if the minilogue is your main instrument than it is a great choice. I play guitar and bass and write chill hop and singer songwriter stuff. The Deepmind sits in the mix without effort. The minilogue never did. The prologue lacked the original minilogue’s filter and apparently so does the xd. That definitely helps with the low end but the minilogue is not smooth or lush any means. The minilogue is fun and very useful in creating music. It has the best interface I have ever used and it is very rewarding. Hope that helps.

    Bo, I always have to laugh at my reaction whenever I hear my own prejudices and preferences reinforced by an expert's opinion. Initially, I get this feeling of complacency and self satisfaction that I, then, become almost immediately suspicious of. But, in this case, when you put the Peak on your list followed immediately by the Minilogue Xd, I just sat back and gloried in my own deeply perceptive abilities without questioning my unconscious motivations at all. Thanks. ;)

    My Top 3: Waldorf Blofeld, DSI Prophet REV 2, and Moog Little Phatty. Nothing beats the Blofeld for sheer versatility, but the REV 2 is a close rival with tons of modulation options. As for the Little Phatty...well, I've owned about twelve different Moog synths, and there's just something about the LP that's special. Sounds soooo good in a mix and you can just tell that Bob put a lot of effort into what would be the last synth he designed.

    Behringer Deepmind 12 - my first Big Boy synth. It's great for pads and plucks with sliders galore to mess with.
    IK Uno - huge sounds from a small box. I wish it had a few more I/O options though
    Behringer Neutron - my goto synth for farty burpy flurbles
    And may I be so bold as to introduce a category called 'Regrettable Purchases'? For me that would be the Arturia Minibrute 2S. I can't make head nor tail of it.

      Hey, the ModX caught my interest for the wavetable thing. Not sure I like the tactile thing, the less screens I have to deal with the better in my book. I have a blofeld which does cool things but is pretty much all screen. Money aside... I want wavetable, ModX or Blofeld ?

    • @caydilemma3309
      @caydilemma3309 5 років тому

      Pierre Faure well MODX only does samples and FM, no wavetables if I recall correctly. You can definitely import wavetable-like wave types in as single cycle waveforms but you won’t be able to scroll through or modulate them like you could on Serum or the Blofeld. If you want hardware wavetables then your choices are basically the Blofeld, Audiothingies Micromonsta, Novation Peak, and Access Virus TI2 (and if you really tossing bands then Waldolf Quantum)

    I literally hadn't heard of the Novation Peak until now, somehow it just slipped under the radar for me (probably because I can't afford it) but god that thing is cool! Give it a few years and it'll be nearly half the price used like Behringer's Deepmind and I'll start considering it haha

    • @ToyKeeper
      @ToyKeeper 5 років тому

      It might not go down in price any time soon, because it's unlikely to go obsolete for a long time. Instead, its price actually went up recently. It is extremely versatile, and its only major functional drawback is being mono-timbral. So, while it can do virtually any synth sound, it can't do them all at the same time.

    • @JDStoneCreations
      @JDStoneCreations 5 років тому

      @@ToyKeeper Ah bugger... I'll stick to figuring out how to use my MODX instead then haha

    • @ToyKeeper
      @ToyKeeper 5 років тому +1

      The Montage DX is a pretty decent music workstation, and it should be capable of doing virtually any sound. It's very deep. And it can do many parts at once. But it'll be a lot harder to learn than a knob-per-function synth, and it relies an awful lot on touchscreen menus to configure things.
      It's not lacking in tech capability. I suppose the main question is what you personally find fits your style the best.

    • @JDStoneCreations
      @JDStoneCreations 5 років тому +1

      @@ToyKeeper Well I bought it because my Triton Extreme is getting a bit dated, and since that is a workstation and doesn't translate to live use very well, the MODX is filling its shoes adequately. As you say its a big learning curve, but I like touchscreens and menu diving thanks to the Triton, so its going pretty well so far!

    • @ToyKeeper
      @ToyKeeper 5 років тому

      Sounds like a win. :)
      My general impression of Yamaha music workstations is that they're very practical and powerful. They get right down to business with none of the fanciful frills found in other brands. It's a tool to use for Making Music, not a toy to entertain one's self with. TBH, I could really use something like that, because I keep hitting my head on the ceiling of what my devices can do.

    • @ToyKeeper
      @ToyKeeper 5 років тому

      I hope so. It'd be awesome to have something better than a Peak, with 16 timbres and more voices than a Virus. But I haven't found enough info yet to know if the Kyra can actually do anything except treble pads and plucks. Demos so far are really lacking in variety and, in particular, bass.

  • @innerspacerace9196

    A take another approach, I randomly toss my synths in a pile and the top three become my top three synths. This save a lot of mental decision making straining. With the exception of my Roland SH 7 it has a lot of pre digital patch memory hair on it.

    Whilst its amazing you get to play with some fantastic gear. No doubt. The average bo bloggs( sorry - jo bloggs) has no real way to afford all the gear. What id really like to see if you could only choose three favourite desert island synths. Assuming you had solar electricity on the island and youv'e been abandoned with a enough food for a fewweeks What three instruments would you take ? I suggest this because you would choose a very different three. you would want synths that cover a few more genres, it would be probabl y more musical in tone as you would want to take anything that was was a one trick pony etc. .
    Now thats a better list. a desert island synth list.
