- "Irony is confusing. Saying one thing and meaning another; it's illegal in Germany."
Jan Böhmermann to Seth Meyers on the Late Show:

Of course, this was meant to be ironic. But, I've seen it many times in Germany, and a lot of my students have told me the same: people in Germany sometimes find it hard to spot irony in English. Irish and British people don't always make it that easy to see.
In this business English video tip, I'll give you 3 tips on how you can spot irony or see when someone is being ironic. Then, you can practise by watching your favourite TV shows in English and seeing who is being ironic. Hope you enjoy this video.

I am a regular commenter on an English-language website. It happens very often that a native speaker replies to me and I really can't tell if he actually means what he writes. So, I have to inquire, "Is this meant seriously or as a joke?" I am angry with myself for not being able to figure it out.
I would say the more you read and comment, the easier it will get to spot if the person is being serious or not. The only other way to do it is to ask. So, asking is not such a bad idea.
