Looks like the instructions are very clear, and your performance when opening the box was entirely unnecessary. And had you looked at five year old UA-cam videos the speed with which you scanned the paper would have been evident. Nonetheless I've given this video a thumbs up because you have provided a really useful idea of how not to use the equipment. Thank you.
To me it looked like you made the profile on really cheap copier paper then used photo paper for the final print. This will not work as you are profiling the type of paper with the inks used etc. Every paper has it's own ICC profile and all setting should be kept the same. I really think you would need to have some understanding of colour management before purchasing such a device.
Yeah I think you're absolutely right
Exactly, that's also why you don't name your profile "Chris" (at 6:45), but a combination of your printer and paper type, like "HP 6234, glossy paper", so that you can select the correct ICC profile later in Photoshop/Lightroom.
running the scanner on the 'yellow' desktop behind the sample sheet may have helped put the 'yellow' bias on the prints....neutral gray or clean white background may help... photo paper is not opaque and some of the under color will be included in the scans.....
I had a chuckle watching you go through the process. A few errors in setup like not selecting the recommended settings, not using the photo paper, one calibration for each paper. Wish you had looked at the cd
I've since realised some of my errors..... It should come with instructions, not a CD. It's 2019.... What laptop has a CD-ROM drive? 🤦♂️
I've no experience with the Print Spyder, but had seen a manufacturer's video on using the gadget. So I had an entertaining minute or three watching you stumbling towards the method of reading the printed calibration chart! I'm sure there were as many goofs when I learned black&white printing all those years ago. Interesting conclusions!

I agreed about the CD. The newer iMacs don’t have even a CD player. We still learned a lot about the product and tedious calibration process so a big thank you. If I was producing prints for sale, it could be worth it.
lol love this :) This video should maybe renamed to 'An example of what happens when you don't read the instructions' ~ don't worry, I did my first cal' last night, it's like driving along an unlit road at night wondering where the next turn is. Thankfully I did read some of the guide and didn't crash my 'car' as much as you ;) I just need to practice more at making individual profiles now for my different print media/papers etc. My first print did turn out good. This printer profiling plus monitor calibration is definitely recommended. Why spend all that time in your preferred image editing if the end result is a tearful mess on paper.

Were there no download able guides last year? There’s a ‘Quick Guide’ & in-depth guide for each unit - have a look if you’ve still got the products, also there’s a free guide on colour management somewhere on their website- worth a re-try
@@petemcdonald8894 I'll have a look, at the time though all it simply stated was that the program would guide you through it.... So I trusted it
I've used Spyder products on my screen, never knew till this video there was printer calibration tools as well.

I could literally see every step of what you were doing, and thinking I wonder if that horizontal block thing was actually key to this, good on ya for being so honest, I think it's great to see that even the best ones can struggle, do they have any instructional videos?
There was no manual, only a quick start guide which only said callibrate your monitor, download the software and plug in the device... 🤷♂️
There is an online guide, see 4:30. They also have a practice module so you can get used to the speed and so on.
you have to profile the printer to the paper. I use several types of paper and use a different profile for each. Print out the test sheet on the photo paper you will use when printing and save that profile accordingly ie "hahnemuhle - baryata 315" "epson - prem luster", etc.. Doing this should give you much better results, cheers.
oh yeah, and don't forget to disable color management when printing your target sheet, otherwise your printer is changing the colors slightly and then your reading them with the Spyder and it is expecting something that hasn't been changed and you end up chasing your tail :-)

@@ChrisGouge That's wrong. The manual is in every single step of the software wizard. It even links to an extensive help file which was installed along with the software.

You cannot place color table right on the brown table. You must put on 10 of the same sheets as printed color table. Next you need to measure the white color which is in the holder before scan. I mus to say FAILED.
I'd be interested to know when you showed us the two examples at 15:21, does the colours match up to the video as well to help us know if there's a true representation of how you described these afterwards?

2 years later, what do you think of it now? I just ordered one. have experience with the X-rite. I bought this to have in my own tool box.
I've not used it since but I've since learned how to properly use it at least so I'd be and to use it more effectively if I needed
You know that CD that's pretty useless to everybody. The manual is on that CD. REad it

Interesting review. Do you think if you had printed the test sheet out on proper photo paper that the colours would have been better represented?
I have indeed wondered if that's where I went wrong too. I just didn't want to waste photo paper if it wasn't necessary. But you're probably right given that's the paper I'd be printing on. Again, they should really provide some better instructions then it would probably be easier to get the right results
Completely agree with you that there should be instructions provided. Maybe those are on the DVD? LOL!

Your comment is quite old now, but anyway I would like to point out that the printer's gamut (which is the device's color space) is always depending on the printer, the ink and the paper used to print the image. Printer profiling is color correction/balancing within the printer's physical limits. And the limit on normal plain paper is quite tight.
That should teach Datacolor to not send their nice products randomly for review! Poor Spyder Print!! That must have traumatized it beyond repair...
I guess the spyder print is a no goer, as even if you get a nice print out; you can never know how to tweek the photo to get the desired look.
I think you just need to know how to use one in advance of buying one. It was user error in my video but there was nothing instructing me on how to use it 🤷♂️

This is hardly a review... it's more of a "begginer tries SpyderPRINT without reading instructions" kind of video xD
Why not take 10 minutes and read the "quick start" or the manual? Watch a video maybe? This is not a skateboard to try and figure out as you go along. Its a measuring device with specific parameters to do it. I own this device, and watching this is truely painful. I cant even make out what he is doing. The guy is doing color calibration/correction with his screen and window open with sunlight pouring in. LOL...Its like swimming with a suite on. LOL Poor guy. The more I think of it the funnier this is. But for you personally, you'd get better results sending it out. I cant imagine there being no instructions, or bad instructions.
