    Can we all take a moment to realize that the drum scan file for this print was "only" 19.5 MP? I really wish more photographers would make big prints from their images rather than wondering if they need to upgrade to some sort of 50+MP camera.
    Great video, beautiful print.

    • @grahamphotos
      @grahamphotos 2 роки тому +20

      It looks like he made a typo in the video overlay. If you look closely where he's editing in Lightroom, you can see the resolution is actually 23190 x 8185, so 190MP.

    • @chriskola3822
      @chriskola3822 2 роки тому +6

      @@grahamphotos Good catch. However, I'll stand by the comment about wishing more photographers would print big. I'm regularly surprised how good 20-25MP images look when printed large. Heck, I've had 6MP images that look great (at reasonable viewing distances).

    • @TRD_Kyle
      @TRD_Kyle 2 роки тому +2

      @@chriskola3822 I frequently print 24x36 inch from a 24MP camera. So far the largest non pano I have done and they look amazing. I definitely want a 40+ MP camera but talk myself down from it whenever I think about the print sizes I have already been able to make with 24. Also can't really afford to print larger than that.

    • @AmorLucisPhotography
      @AmorLucisPhotography 2 роки тому +1

      @@chriskola3822 Yes, there might be 19.5 MP in an image, but you're forgetting that it is a 2x5 pano. To capture that ratio image on a standard 2x3 ratio sensor you'd need something like a 44.6MP (5456 x 8185) sensor. Given that the lengthwise dimension is 23190 pixels, though, that would require a massive 358MP sensor at the 2x3 ratio. Of course, just because the digital image has that number of pixels it does not mean that the lens plus sensor (or film in this case) can resolve anywhere close to that.

    • @chriskola3822
      @chriskola3822 2 роки тому +3

      @@AmorLucisPhotography I'm not forgetting the format. Of course, if you are going to try to crop a 2x3 format to a pano this size you need a very large file. Hard to do digitally. Of course, with a bit of luck and some good technique you can often stitch images into a pano and have a very large resulting file. Not easy , but technically possible.
      However, not all large prints need to be panoramas. Still worth it to print big in my opinion.

    I have seen it all before and I did know before you uttered his name it would be Nick. And that is because we all absolutely love these films. Hint... do more idea to shot to process to print to frame. My guess they would make a very popular series. They are the ones I watch over and over, from you mate, and Mr Nick C. It's art and info. Great print and video Thomas.
    I am printing pretty often for/with photography clients. Not Canon printers but large format Epson's (up to 48inch wide prints). In those printers you can easily change ink cartridges in the middle of printing without seeing any quality loss (providing you use the same type of ink). I would be surprised if Canon does not offer the same feature on their professional line printers.
    Cheers from LA.

    Thomas, Thomas.....if you think Simon's printer is big, you should make a visit to a printing trade show one day. The size of some printers would blow your mind :P :) When I started to work in the digital printing industry in 2010, I went to FESPA in Munich with my new team. There I discovered printers with 5m long bed, able to print crazy sizes I've never heard of, huge flatbed printers, huge roll-to-roll printers.... It's a fascinating world :)
    And congrats for the print, it looks fantastic! :)

    I recently composed a one-sheet triptych from three similarly-themed images. After trimming the pano paper I printed it on, it's 13" by 30". Not massive, but the biggest print I've ever produced. It cost a mint to mat and frame but it's worth it, as it's now the centerpiece of my living room wall.

    Hi Thomas,
    Very interesting video !
    I'm working in a printing lab AND framing shop in France.
    We work with 2 (and 1 more to come) printers, one can print 60" large and the other one takes 44" rolls.
    You're absolutely right regarding the non-reflective glass, when you print a piece of art it's a must-have, it does protect the print and it's nearly invisible if positioned well on a wall.

    I agree Thomas, the process of shooting to print/frame is fantastic. I learnt many years ago to NEVER skimp on your LARGE PRINT producer or your Framer. If the print is on your wall, the last thing you want to see every time you look at it are errors made by the printer or framer. Some great advice in this VLOG. Thank you !

  • @AmorLucisPhotography

    But Thomas, you *can* actually now print larger than A2 on the P-1000, thanks to a firmware update. From firmware update 3.010 you can now print up to 1.2m length! You're still restricted to 17 inch width ( or height for a pano), so not quite as large as your print, but still a really decent size for a pano. I've just bought a roll of high quality baryta (just yesterday in fact) precisely for printing big landscapes on my Canon P-1000. Yay!

    Beautiful print, Thomas. You will enjoy it for many years to come. Funny thing, I did two bird prints in Jan. First prints I've done in a year. One was a great blue heron standing on a log in a pond and preening at sunrise. The top and top sides of the print are all black reflections of willows. The GBH is almost a silhouette but with some feather detail and a bit of color in the bright highlight of the rising sun on the water; and the rest of the water is all red all the way to the bottom. It is 18x26 inches and I entered it in our gallery's annual regional photography exposition. And, yes, I did have it dry mounted on archival board and custom framed with a two-toned wood frame. I also used Museum Glass for the same reasons you did. Can't wait for the reception tomorrow night to see if it won an award. But....., there is freezing rain headed this way with an accumulation of 3/8-inch of clear ice. Enough to break tree limbs and electric lines, so I'm guessing there won't be a reception tomorrow night.

    When I was in university, I had a part time job in a photo lab. The lab had a Epson Stylus Pro 7800. One day I had to print a huge photo for a customer. It took a very, very long time. When the printer was finally done, I took the print to examine it. When I bent over close to see if there were any streaking or any weird stuff the printer had done, a single drop fell out of my nose. I quickly tried to wiped of, by instinct. Big brain move when it comes to fresh ink prints. Well, I had to print it again.
