I cannot hear this Schubert masterpiece enough. I think I have died and gone to heaven whenever I hear it, in fact, I do hope that if there is such a thing as life after death, this music will be heard from time to time reminding me of the absolute beauty of music and life!
This is great music and a great performance. Bush and son-in-law, or Serkin and father-in-law, it doesn't matter how you look at it. This is music at its greatest level - we should be happy it was recorded
The lyrical thread that Adolf Busch spins has never been matched by any violinist playing Schubert. He is in communion with the intentions and the fragility of the creator of this eternal music.
Not underrated, just not as well known as it should. For those who know the canon of piano-violin repertoire, this is considered one of the greatest work ever.
I know all the Sonatas and Symphonies very few of the quartets ,the song cycles but have never heard this amazingly soulful duo before ...unforgettable . How did Schubert write so much ? I hope we have some letters from him !
Wonderful music and performance which I have heard many times, am glad you posted it. Must say, I think that the piano part of the whole opening section of just about 3 and a half minutes duration would sound fantastic on Marimba especially with the tremolos done with very soft mallets for sustained, smooth (legato) kind of sound.
I was looking to try to "isolate" the "theme" since many years . 0:05 . Actually , it's impossible . The combination of an aetheral melody and incredible harmonies makes it not to be found ; the only result : Franz touching the very core of pain and despair .
A superior evidence, something of which one has the metaphysical intuition, the absolute, transcendental certainty of its existence, without being able to fully grasp or demonstrate it: a soul.
schubert died at the age of 31. he is now in heaven with his vieannese collegues hyden, mozart, beethoven, brahms, bruckner, j.strauss, schönberg, alban berg, anton von webern. ps. bush and serkin studid and where activ in vienna
Bush cannot cope with the performanc of Leonid Kogan -life in 1975.Rudolf Serkin on the piano remains one of the best and expressive for his role in this Schuberts Fantasy. The sound from 1931 has to be taken for granted.
He can and he does so well! With all due respect, it`s truly like comparing apples to oranges-really,what`s the need? Leonid Kogan has been my favorite violinist since childhood, hands down !! Having known his family personally and collected almost all of his phenomenal recordings, yet this is where one would have to differ in opinion with an aforementioned statement- Busch`s more lyrical, "singing" take on Schubert`s masterpiece to the ears of many is much more suiting to the essence of this music than Kogan`s more aggressive approach, that we both still admire and revere.
@@DavidWDNO Well said. Kogan is one of the most virtuoso violinists of all times - but Bush has a lyrical sound and by no means a lack of technique. They simply had a different ideal with their playing. Both are great - and the world would be less without having both of them.
The most exquisite performance ever!
Just one word for this magnificent piece, the perfection

Two great artists at their peak.

Fascinating! Thank you. Lovely performance.
What a fantastic rendition of this marvelous work!
A great performance!. Eric Shumsky
the introduction is a complete dream , and drama .... I'm paralysed every time ... Busch and Serkin playing from some other world .....
Beautiful interpretation!a cd that I've never been able to locate!!thank you so much!
Perfection. Thank you.
one of his most underrated compositions.
and one of the most underrated performances

I say wow.Absolutely fantastic !
First hearing for me today - I LOVE it when I find a piece that scores (pun intended) with me - I'm in love again.
The rest should be silence

Thank you . Great comment.
"Gross ist Jehovah der Herr" Schubert song
One reason that it's hard to isolate the theme is that there are several themes. Schubert created here an amazing piece that, is very theatrical.
@@danielscheinhaus5210
I don't feel this as "theatrical" ..........
Minute 9:00 Mozart sonata?
You mean one of his sonatas for violin & piano or piano alone? I hear quite a bit of Beethoven influencing this, as well.
The first movement of Mozart's famous A major piano sonata.

And Gustav Mahler
of Course sorry
No problem , you're welcome .
I think Schonberg, Berg and Webern are in hell...because only the devil could like their so-called music.
@@alex9920ro I can understand your idea .
But listen to their early works , and then further ....
You will see , they composed like Mozart .....
Busch was Peter Serkin's grandfather.
Thanks so much for that information!
@@danielscheinhaus5210 Yes, Rudolf Serkin (papa Serkin) married Adolf Bush daughter - and Peter is their son. Great traditions lives on.
