The Fantasy in C is a top-drawer Schubert masterpiece. I've listened to it countless times. My first encounter was via the Gidon Kremer recording - and 'the first cut is the deepest'. Lex Melnikov is wonderful.
Isabelle Faust plays the pristine "Sleeping Beauty" Stradivari violin of 1704 which lay dormant in a castle much of the 19th century. Both the instrument and Schubert's Fantasy come alive in her hands. Always a pleasure to hear her and this prize violin. (The instrument is in near perfect condition, still bearing its original neck. There is a frightening burn mark at the top of the scroll, indicating it was in contact with a very hot heat source long enough to have set it on fire!)
This fantasy shows quite another face of Schubert's genius than the outstanding Wanere fantasy, whuch present us this constructive genius at its top level (even the last Beethoven did not envisage such cyclic forms). Here, ware closer to the fantasy for four hands piano and even the lieder composer, 'lieder' being understood in the widest sense since here various moods are expressed (this is the very Fantasy spirit). We even have a variation section, which souns like a transition from Mozart's P.V sonatas to tBethoven's so-cl alled 'Kreutzer' sonata. This music is very well written; the soloist does not look after virtuosty but lyrism. Actully, Schubert was a pianist, not a violonist,, which is obvious in this Fantasy. The interprets are outsatnding here, as they are in a wide range of the P/V repertoire. This very beautiful work should find its room between the more famous sonatas of Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Franck or Debussy.
I would say this is the finest recording of this work to date.

I was googling the "Wanere Fantasy" hoping there there was a Schubert gem I hadn't yet heard.
