- Reviewing the Roku Streaming Stick 4K, the best budget-friendly TV streamer boasting Ultra HD, plus Dolby Vision and HDR10 Plus support. With the latest Roku OS 10.5, strong app support, an upgraded mobile app and improved visuals, the Streaming Stick 4K boasts a comprehensive set of features. It's certainly my favourite smart streamer of 2021, for under £100.
Setup is straightforward, just a few steps and you're in. Those visuals have been improved, with DV added to the HDR smarts, and full Ultra HD support for the best viewing experience. Providing your TV can handle it, of course. All of the major apps can be found on the Roku Streaming Stick 4K, as well as a lot of just plain weird and some slightly terrifying ones.
That Voice Remote Control is as excellent as ever, despite the app shortcut buttons that can't be customised. You've got cross-platform voice search now, while the Roku App for iOS and Android also works a charm.
So what do you reckon, is this really the best budget streaming box around?

Yeah I don’t like the thin square shaped size, constantly slipping out of hands or taking a dive between cushions

I spent the first couple minutres frustrated because I wasn't getting a signal and it turns out the powerstrip I was plugged into wasn't working. hehe

I Have a Roku Streaming Stick Plus, came out in 2019, HD, 4K, & HDR I Love It. This New Roku Streaming Stick 4K Plus Is the same thing i have already. It's Just Package With a new Look. I Also Switch Out My Roku Remotes That Originally Came With The One I have To The Roku Rechargeable Remote, You Never Have to Worry About Batteries Again. I Charge My Roku Remote Thru a USB Port. Don't Waste Your Money If You Have The one i have. Roku Just Gave The New 4K Plus A New Face Lift. Happy Streaming.

Is the wifi range better on this? It is advertised at "up to 2x better", whereas the ultra is advertised as coming with their "best wifi"

i avoided roku for YEARS thinking the remote was dinky and the tvs were cheap. finally got two roku tcl tvs a couple of months ago and i cannot believe how much i love the platform! everything is so nifty and user friendly, even the remote. I am so mad i bought these crummy android sony tvs all these years. and the roku original content/free tv is a super cool bonus. they have lots of older shows that i love. i have a sony bravia in my bedroom and i am replacing with roku tv as soon as the new roku tvs (actually manufactured by roku) come out this year
Bought one last month.
Could not make it work on my 5Ghz hotspot. Also it ran very hot (80°c from day 1, not good for the electronics?)
Spend a week trying to set it up, returned it, bought an Amazon firestick (£20).
Booted, found the 5Ghz hotspot, entered the password.
Worked.
And it runs cool.
is the firestick a one off payment? which apps come with it - bbc, itv etc.? can you use moviebox?

Hello, first of all your video and very informative, well organized and has given me the information to make the choice to purchase this Roku. Before I go on and buy it, I have a question, a question that may or may not be a rare thing.
Basically, my Samsung smart tv for some odd reason always disconnects from my WiFi upon being powered on.
Once I power it on and go to an app like Netflix, it lets me know that the tv is not connected to WiFi, so then I have to re connect the tv to the WiFi. Rinse repeat sadly.
If I buy this Roku, and once I connect it to WiFi through the Roku itself, will it suffer the same issue as my Samsung tv or no ?
Please let me know, as I really want to buy a Roku because sadly my Samsung smart tv has had the issue of constantly diss connecting from my WiFi. And before anyone asks, my WiFi is beyond fine and has no issues. I’m getting roughly 600 mbps. And rarely have outages.
I was having the same problem. I didn’t “fix” it, but if I power the tv on using the power button and wait a minute before trying to open an app it will connect. Anytime I hit the Netflix or Amazon button to power the tv on, it says no connection.
I have no idea what that guy was saying... but it seemed like a good review!
I hope it does a better job with channel support on the 5ghz Freq than the streaming stick plus does!
Personally I'd prefer it if they had more new devices with an Ethernet connection.
One design flaw I see is the power connector why not make it in the back of the stick so it does not come in the way of other hdmi connectors.

Hey, does the Roku Stick 4k support H264? I see that on the website they only mention HEVC and AV1.
I ordered one for an after Christmas thing.
Can I use my blu ray player and Xbox one with this thing since that would be helpful to learn!
The Roku Streaming Stick 4K is not compatible with UA-cam. You have to set the Roku to 1080p.
so if the tv isnt 1080p it wont play youtube?

i dunnno, i watch youtube on my roku 4k streaming stick all the time. i have a sony bravia 4k tv 🤷♂️ never had problem
Yeah these streaming devices keep getting better.....I always end up watching Netflix or the like.
Pleased they made the power cable longer, I've got the old + and that was a pain. Just picked up a firestick max and think id go with that now, being able to sideload apps means I only need that for everything I need
The trick (if you have an hdmi cable?)
Get an HDMI extender socket (about £2.50 for a pair on line)
Plug the HDMI into the TV.
Run it to a convenient power point.
Plug in the extender then the stick.
Easy.

Do I need a need an special extension hdmi cable for 4K or will a standard work? I don have room to be able to connect directly to the tv.

Worth upgrading from my Roku3 box (now almost 10 years old) Also, can you plug this into one of your surround receiver HDMI ports, ie, Blue Ray, etc? or can it only plug into your TV's HDMI port?
If your device support passing through the HDMI and HDCP then yes. But check your receiver's max resolution, etc. so you get the best experience.

What are watch lists like? Can you add programmes from BBC, ITV etc?
Plug into Stereo receiver input to hdmi output to TV.... Full stereo out for speakers.

how big is the memory vs the cheaper £20 stick you have to remember to get 4k you have to have fast internet and unlimited as it will be larger files to download for what you are watching.

Roku IS supportive of both free and paid UA-cam TV, at least 8n the USA
How is FuboTV on the Roku? Fubo has always looked band on Samsung TVs for me, whether the native app or through Apple TV, but I heard it’s better on the Roku stick.

No, unless you get certain apps (channels) like netflix etc. But if you don't want those there are lots of channels free.

sorry for the antiquated question, i don't watch tv but my daughter does, i'm assuming you have to pay extra for the netflix, spotify services? why get a stick if your tv has this connection? i'm trying to understand if we need one or not. thanks.
Actually, if your tv has already those apps you don't need that. People buy it so they can have apps that the tv doesn't have. I advice not to buy it if you have already the apps that you use.
My telly has these apps, but the interface is slow and clunky. I use the Roku because it's a better experience. If your happy with the apps on tv, though, you don't need this, but it's nice.

I would advise anyone who wants a far superior stick or small device that plugs into your HDMI with 4k and Chromecast built in, meaning you can get pretty much anything AND sideload stuff which is far more user friendly, look no further than Google TV 4k. And if you buy a usb hub with power input you can have as much storage as you like and have 3 or 4 spare usb ports and ab SD card port. For only around 60 quid. Maybe less.
