      Forget about Liquid Metal and start using something better: Honeywell PTM7950 Super Highly Thermally Conductive PCM Pad , and you're not going back to that crap that is Liquid Metal , Already most good services in Europe use it in PS5 and earlier models , Works very well on laptops too .
      Thermal Grizzly paste is not suitable for PS5, the best at the moment is Honeywell PTM7950, in our service it has already been tested on 323 PS5 units and 457 PS4 units and after more than 9 months they all work perfect.
      Thermal Grizzly paste is not even comparable to Honeywell PTM7950. it's a waste of your money to buy a Thermal Grizzly. Just remember to buy only the original Honeywell PTM7950.

    Why is no one talking about the fact that liquid metal doesn't leak like water? Has anyone ever used it? Those pictures are suspicious. Please look up liquid metal application and see for yourself the density of it. The foam protectors are there so when you press down on the heat sink it doesn't squish too much to the sides. It looks like user errors to me or possible factory defect during LM application.
    Looks like the article was retracted and it was debunked. What a suprise it was basically clickbait... Enjoy your ps5s\future potential PC builds guys.

  • @RJforYT
    @RJforYT Рік тому +1

    I posted this on your 1200 model tear down video and I want to post it here as well because its more relevant to this video.
    Everyone, I'm pretty sure I know what the issues is with the liquid metal. First I'm a machinist and we deal with silver plated pins for satellites, etc. Every time the Plate company returns the pins there is a "dog boning" effect (edges of pin are a thicker than the center of the pin).
    So I believe this can effect every model of console. Whats happening is there probably plating the heat sink vertical which causes more nickle material to attach to one side. This would have a "mound" effect, a 0.001 or more thickness difference between one side or the other. If there not smoothing or granite stoning a smooth even thickness afterwards there will be uneven pressure between the die (APU) and the heat sink surface. Over time the liquid metal is squeezed out of the higher pressure area and spreads to the less pressured area causing a dry spot, eventually leading to a hot spot and overheating. I would love to see TheCod3r take a square edge to the heat sink and the die to see just how flat those surfaces are? My bet is the hot spot ones are not flat.
    This to me is going to effect the 1000, 1100, 1200, models in time. How many have uneven plating? Who knows, but there will be many that will not have uneven pressure and there will be x number of consoles that will.

  • @eathenalexander2836

    Reason Sony uses liquid metal is because their over clocking the hell out that chip to get everything possible out of it( also sound good for marketing). So it needs to be sufficiently cooled. For another model they can use a more powerful chip that doesn’t have to be pushed so hard to get the same power. So normal thermal paste can be used instead of liquid metal

    I'm no expert, but surely the fault lies within the part that keeps the liquid metal sealed in? If it's leaking out then that means it's not being contained properly, regardless of whether it's in a vertical position. Gravity shouldn't have an effect on it if it was contained properly.

  • @TurtleTracks84
    @TurtleTracks84 Рік тому +3

    05:20 seems that you made the liquid metal seep to the left when tearing the foam off. The liquid metal was sticking to the foam, so when you teared the foam off a little drop of liquid metal was dragged to the left.

    • @TheCod3r
      @TheCod3r  Рік тому +5

      You're partially right there, indeed. However, the liquid metal was, as you say, to the left and on the foam. It should never have to hit the foam. And trust me, the LM was already seeping under the foam too

    • @kamani6820
      @kamani6820 Рік тому

      @@TheCod3r wdym it should never touch the foam? Isn’t that what it’s there for? If you remove the foam ofc it’s going to leak out, all you wanted to do was make a video fear mongering for views

    • @TheCod3r
      @TheCod3r  Рік тому +3

      Well if the liquid metal was contained properly it would never seep to the left, and should never have to hit the foam in the first place.
      If you think about it this way: The foam is indeed there to help stop liquid metal spilling onto the board, granted. However, over time, the liquid metal gets soaked up into the foam and eventually there's not enough on the SoC to actually effectively cool the system. Either that or it soaks so much into the foam over time that it causes the foam to become full, to the point it will no longer effectively do its' job (meaning it'll no longer be able to actually soak up the liquid metal) so it would eventually run over and onto the board anyway.
      Now, if Sony actually designed a good system and didn't have to overclock the SoC, they would never have needed liquid metal. If they didn't want the system to look like something from the 2050s, they would be able to put a better heatsink in and effectively cool the system with thermal paste rather than with liquid metal. LM isn't designed for consumer electronics, it's designed for overclockers. Overclockers take precautions which includes a lot more than a little piece of foam.
      What Sony should be doing if they want to use liquid metal, is build a proper wall with a proper gasket around the edge, and have the heatsink sitting inside the wall rather than just on top. Sorry but anyone with a brain cell can see that this is going to cause an issue. Gravity will win hands down 100% of the time. I don't care how smart the engineers at Sony are, they aren't as smart as nature.

  • @zebular
    @zebular Рік тому +1

    As someone who has applied liquid metal to damn near everything that has a nickel plated or copper heatsink, I can very much tell you Sony went WAY WAY overboard on the PS5 application. I've used liquid metal on Nintendo Switch consoles and laptops (obviously they will be in all sorts of different orientations) with zero issue. You basically want to apply it so as the whole die surface looks wet and that's it, no pools etc. Granted you may have to do a 2nd application to copper heatsinks due to it absorbing into the copper creating an alloy, but after a 2nd application you should be good.

    I have used plastidip to conformal coat boards in the past. At around £11 a can it is very cost effective and I was able to apply 3 coats to one PC motherboard.
    However I have only ever used it for one customer who had desktops in an industrial environment that were vulnerable to moisture and it worked very well, the customer was very pleased as faults were far less common.

      @@KarlUKmidlands I looked at it in my electrical wholesaler, but £24 for 400ml was a bit excessive.
      I was using it on Pentium desktops that are borderline worthless, I was selling them spare units for £70 with their software preinstalled, that they could just swap out and basically throw away.
      I offered them the conformal coated workstations for £100 to try and that seemed to hit the price point and they are lasting lot longer it seems, but with second hand workstations it is hard to judge.

    At the moment I don't have a PS5, although I am getting one soon. As such, this issue doesn't concern me at the moment; it's just that when I do get my ps5, I plan on keeping it for at least 10 years, if not for ever! I don't want it that 6 years down the line, my ps5 just breaks(my parents probably wouldn't buy me a new one). Now sure, you could just place the system horizontally, but personally, I really don't like the way that looks; I'd probably just keep mine vertically. Anyway, thanks for the clarification on how serious of a problem this is. I hope that by the time I get my console(very soon), this issue is fixed, and a thing of the past.

    If it was unbreakable then how would you go to buy another one when your warranty expires?? This is how sneaky companies like Sony are nowadays. That's why your warranty lasts for only two years, because that's the actual lifespan of every kind of machine that they produce until it starts to break down slowly, and since I'm very sure that they are very much aware of what's going on in the Internet with all this new information about the frigging liquid metal issue and since they haven't yet responded with a nice excuse it can only mean one thing, and that thing is that they don't want to get exposed which is really stupid because they're already exposed anyways. Those two years that they give is the most tricky kind of policy they could find, because that's the exact turning point as this is when everything begins to occur, which means it's a very very f@cked up situation unless you're the lucky one. Sony must immediately let us know what's happening with all this because noone wants to spend another 700 euros on a second ps5 because our warranty expired 😒.

    Those who say it's all lies don't want to hear anything bad obout their beloved PS5, But let's think about this logically, you cannot defy the laws of gravity and liquid will always be pulled down.
    PC CPUs are built different from consoles as they have a heat spreader which covers the caps around the die, consoles have a bare die as that is the best way to dissipate the heat to the heatsink just like a laptops CPU/GPU, some will say "yes but some laptops have liquid metal and they run fine"
    Yes they do because the majority of the time they are laid flat so the CPU/GPU is horizontal.
    But the last thing I will say is that "consoles" are not meant to be portable and should stay in the same place and not carried around to your friends house and plonked on the nearest flat surface.

      Agreed, just because there’s a failure point, it’s quite a leap to say the design is fundamentally flawed. The Liquid Metal egress has only been witnessed in consoles needing service; that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the cause. It can be, but the circumstantial factors that caused the leak are highly subjective. I don’t think you can objectively call it a design flaw. It’s merely anecdotal evidence.

    2. If a unit arrives doa out of the box, why does the buyer bring it to a repair shop instead of reporting to the seller or Sony direct ?

Oh little Johnny was just playing with his ps5 and boom it caught fire all by itself. When really little Johnny got angry he threw his controller and it hit his ps5 and knocked it over.... I myself don't understand considering how you can say a PC and ps5 are different in terms of cooling. I have never ever had to coat my PC's motherboard when using liquid metal for starters. There are PC's that are extremely compact just like the ps5 and have big beefy gfx cards like a 3080 with 3 fans vibrating the crap out of it yet still no leaks... whilst I am not saying this doesn't happen I'm saying there is way more to this than a bad design

I have never used it, if I want to bring temps down I use water and in fact I have just given up on my Ryzen stock cooler for a Cooler Master AIO simply as the old cooler is good but not man enuff for my demands, I used to be known as a cryo and peltier expert once upon a time from my days of chasing the magic 3ghz single core Barton leaderboard, cryo was an absolute ballache because of condensing around the chip bye bye mobo/cpu, it was with a wide pipe water circuit and 240w Peltier I got the CPU down to very low temps and smashed that 3ghz target on a 1700 rated mobile AMD chip (lasted about a week before it popped) and even then I had to use gobs of dialectic grease as condensation would accumulate then freeze without it then on shutdown warm up and frazzle frazzle goes the electronics next power up cycle.

    I've had my console for over a year, I moved it flat because I'm a worrier. I understand metal expands when It heats up so it can move. But then again I do move it around when I clean it and take out the fan to spray WD-40 contact cleaner.. but I don't want to keep taking the fan out bc I've seen port snap off fhe board not unlike HDMI has endured.
    I guarantee ppl fiddling about trying to force it in is the issue.
