  • Rotator recovery OVER a wall on the freeway. Watch as I use Hulk, my 50ton rotator, to fix a messy load shift on the freeway. The customer was hauling a 10ton crane counterweight that flew off the trailer, hit the back of his cab, and landed in-between the trailer and the wall. My first instinct was to park parallel to him and do the recovery from his driver side. Then I had the thought to take it up a notch and do the entire job from the freeway onramp on the opposite side.
    By positioning my truck here, I was able to work the entire job without having to close down any additional lanes. Using the 5 degree tilt feature on this Miller rotator, I was able to level out my truck for a stable platform despite being on a steep embankment. The job was very fun with my usual out of the box thinking, and in no time we got the load corrected. The driver was only going to the next exit and made it safely.

    I just can never get it in my head that those straps can lift that much weight.

      Straps are commonly used in the construction field by cranes a magnitude bigger than Hulk. A big 5/8" Grade 10 chain has a working load limit of just under 25,000lbs, and weighs a ton. Technology is amazing, isn't it?

    • @timothygeiger437
      @timothygeiger437 3 роки тому

      I do flatbed, I secure equipment all the time. You can't always use straps, but many loads you can. The straps I have actually have a higher working load limit than the chains I have. The reason we use chains with some loads, the steel chain doesn't stretch, & metal against metal creates a "friction" which stops forward & rear movement. Obviously some loads like skidsteer loaders & similar must use chains. Straps are much lighter & alot faster to use though.
      Scientifically nylon is stronger than steel, which is why the straps have a higher working load limit!

    That slick over the wall was amazing. You made a lot of people happy. DOT, Law enforcers and all of the commuters who didn’t have to deal with two closed lanes.

    Nicely thought out to keep the freeway open and the motorist rolling One thing I wasn't a fan of was Dave spending way to much time In what I call the kill zone Everything Dave did could of been done while being on top the trailer Be Safe !

    You got me in this video, full center at 20:48 !! 😂 I drove by this recovery and from a distance saw the boom on the other side. Immediately thought 'This is crazy, feels like a Pepe's Tow" and then saw a guy in orange standing on the trailer, thought "this body, shape, height, gotta be Dave, no doubt". Where am I? in the silver Dodge Van (classy car for a guy, right) in full frame as you pan the camera, perfectly following me down the freeway. 👍

    20,000 lb counter weight with just 2 small chains?? That explains why it fell off the truck. Thank God it fell off there and not into traffic!! Good job with the simple/not simple save!! The beauty of the remote controls, you can operate the truck without being able to see the truck itself.

    • @PepesTowingService
      @PepesTowingService  3 роки тому +4

      Correct, two small horizontal supports but no vertical! As to operating the truck without seeing it, that's the beauty of knowing the ins and outs 100% of your truck. I know damn well Hulk could lift that much off the side at that distance, and with my platform set up I knew I wouldn't have to monitor it. Still, I would be able to "feel" it or see the boom in case it was having issues.

    Lucky that brick wall didn't fall over from the vibrations from HULK. The only thing that appeared to be holding it up was cobwebs.
    Can't believe that those counterweights were so lightly chained straight to the floor of the trailer!!
    That was an accident ready to happen. That guys chains were like shoelaces.

    Just a stupid question; you now damn well what your truck can do.
    But don’t you want to have visuals on the truck (even if only with just one eye) to make sure traffic doesn’t run into your truck? I don’t want to imagine what would happen if that would be at the moment you have 20.000lbs on your truck. No sight would mean no time to react I’d think?
    Or is that the choice between closing two extra lanes on one hand vs a little risk on the other hand?

    Teslas are the new Prius’. Can’t tell you how many times I run into a Prius or Tesla in the #1 lane tooling along at the speed limit, milking the most efficiency from the electric motor. If you have a Prius or a freaking Tesla and you want to work your mileage mojo, don’t do it in the #1 lane and block the flow of traffic just to show off. In reality, we hate electric cars because the drivers are for the most part, self righteous pricks.

    You always make it look so easy! Quite elegant, this. Well done!
