- After a poor run in the wet on the second night The Darling of Alexandra Park, Delightful Lady, was faced with a "must win" challenge to make the Grand Final. Probably the best race of the carnival, certainly for home town fans, a tense home-straight battle ensued as The Lady made it in a time of 2:42.3, a New Zealand record with a mile-rate of 1:58.7 for the 2200 metre journey.
My greatest memory of being at "the Park". The huge crowd were raucus. Spine-tingling stuff and still today watching this again stirs up emotion. Thanks so much.
Incredible effort by Delightful Lady to run down Gammalite in the shadows of the post, after giving Gammalite at least 2 - 3 lengths at the top of the straight.
