1984 NZ TNT Messenger Championship - Alexandra Park, Auckland: Roydon Glen

Unanimously voted NZ Harness Horse of the Year in 1984, Roydon Glen wins the premier race for 4-year-olds, The Messenger Championship, starting from the outside of the front line behind the mobile (#9) and breaking after hitting the gate. I was at the track that night and he got a great reception from a very large crowd.

I was there that night and after breaking at the start we thought that was it !! What a great horse and amazing performance..

Probably the earliest harness racing star I can remember. Absolute ripper.

What I have noticed in all these big N.Z races from the early to mid 80's there seems to be quiet a few horses breaking or getting knocked out of the race.
Maybe half the drivers shouldn't have been allowed to drive, very rough tactics.
Great win by Roydon Glen, really blossomed as a 4 & 5yo, would have been great if they had ventured over to Australia for some of the big races in the mid 80's.
