    Just came back to say thanks for this video - based on it I picked up the same paint and a Magnum X5. Ceiling looks amazing and that X5 is awesome, I'm going to use it in a bunch of other projects. Thanks again!

    anyone looking to do this, i did it and it’s awesome. been about a year now. i used sherwin williams pro mar flat black. the taping around the upper edge is the best idea ever. but make sure to use frog tape delicate (yellow roll). i also primed duct work, wire and pex to help with adhesion. i have a graco vsp sprayer and it worked for a bedroom but took forever so used a buddies big sprayer and did the entire rest of basement in the time i did one bedroom. i also let it dry for a few hours and went over it again with a light second coat and then did touch ups few hours later. having adequate lighting helps finding blemishes you miss.

    If you want a crisp line after taping use the color you used on wall to go over tape so that bleeds thru, let dry, then spray 👍

    I'm in the process of painting my open basement ceiling using a mini-roller. Yes, I'm retired and have the time but you'd be surprised at how much you can cover in a couple of hours. It isn't necessary to doing any masking, etc. I'm using dark grey (Graphite) and think it'll come out okay. Just offering another option for consideration. Thanks for the opportunity.

    Looks amazing. I'm getting ready to use the Dryfall in my newly built detached garage with high ceilings. Instead of hanging drywall, i like the industrial look of this. 2 questions: 1) Lowes has an acrylic Dryfall that is $40 cheaper than the Lowes waterbase Dryfall. What is the reason for one over the other? 2) Who rents a sprayer? I don't want to invest in a sprayer that i will never use again.

    • @KodiakWoodcraft

    Once you put you first tape line on the wall along the ceiling paint from the tape to the ceiling with your wall color. Then you can put your tarp up with tape but keep that tarp tape line in the center of the first tape you installed. You won’t have to worry about the black or whatever color your using bleed through.

    First, this looks amazing. I just removed my drop ceiling and am prepping the lines, etc. for paint. I have some pink insulation at the top of the wall. What should I do about that? Do I remove it completely? Remove it and put it back? If I put it back then I will have the contrast of bright pink insulation against black paint.

    Did you need to prep ductwork to accept paint? Did you set up a fan to blow out fumes etc to outside? Did you need to use a vacuum or blower on ceiling to get rid of dust / construction dust debris before spraying? Thanks

    • @KodiakWoodcraft
      @KodiakWoodcraft  8 місяців тому

      I didn't do any special priming or anything. I did my best to blow the dust off and used an air mover to get it out of the basement. I think I used it when I was painting as well for ventilation, but I don't remember. Obviously, only so much you can do about all the dust up there. The paint accepted perfectly. A few years later there is no cracking or anything.

      Hmm. There were some areas at the top of my walls where I sprayed the insulation. It took a fair amount of spray to make it look good and it's kind of a hassle if the insulation ever gets moved to adjust wires or anything. If the whole ceiling had insulation I might avoid this project.

      Thanks Max! Some choose to prime the ductwork in order to protect it from cracking. I did not, and it's been fine so far. However, I may need to report back after more time passes. I didn't paint an electrical outlet box. I think that was the only thing I had to avoid.

    Great video! I will be painting my ceiling soon and was planning on painting before the framing and drywall. Thoughts on this? Also, did you have nails from the first floor coming thru and if so, did you cut them off first? Thanks.

    • @KodiakWoodcraft
      @KodiakWoodcraft  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks! I'm guessing that would be a great way to do things, as long as the drywall is installed nicely. Mine was never intended to be exposed at the top so I had to do some patching, etc. Then I used the "black line" trick to hide the imperfections. I painted right over any nails.

      Painting over the insulation works (2 coats were needed), but it doesn't look great if you have to go mess around with the insulation later to run new wires or do anything like that. If you don't plan to be touching it much, it's fine to paint in my experience.
