As a airline lost baggage agent I always told everyone to put their name/address/email/phone# along with the details of where they will be going with the dates where they will be on a piece of paper on top of the inside of their luggage. Once we opened the bags that had no tags on them we immediately forwarded their baggage. Even with a great tag like yours I would still take a few minutes to write and enclose details.

I made several of these for all over. My favorite is my camera, with this tag, you'll never lose it!
Nice project!! I have been meaning to buy luggage tags, but since I have all the materials in my stash already, I might as well make some... oh and a nice little trick when you are doing button holes is to place a pin at the ends of your stitching to act as a stopper... It will keep you from accidentally cutting through your stitching when cutting the button hole.

Making these tags is a great idea.
Cordura fabric would probably make great luggage tags as well. Cordura is often used to make luggage, backpacks, etc. It is usually made of nylon, it doesn't usually fray. It comes in various weights- I would think a lighter weight would work well for this.

Great idea! I'm thinking you could also cut it just a bit bigger than needed and apply the vinyl on top of the finished tab via zigzagging on three sides.

Loved this. I think I will make these for Christmas presents for my sorority sisters.
Suggestions: 1) baste vinyl first, will make it easier to sew around and turn in bottom, 2) when sewing bottom, sew narrower seam allowance in the final area to be turned in - makes it much easier to turn inside and fits better, 3) before cutting opening use a seam sealant to prevent fraying and strengthen stitches, 4) suggest bias tape instead, or in addition to, folding top edge of vinyl as vinyl tends to weaken quickly especially when exposed to heat and sun on a warm day. Optional: add Velcro to pocket for reusable open and close. Consider pocket on both sides. One for destination and one for returning.
If I ever fly, I will make some of these up! I think this is a great idea. I am not afraid of heights, but I sure am of flying!! I would like to go to Ireland some day, but I think I will have to be medicated first! LOL

What a great idea! I'm wondering what gauge vinyl you use and how do you keep it from sticking to the foot as you sew on it? Also, how about using the Crossroads denim fabric...would that work? They have really bright colors which would stand out for easy identification.
Janet Borchers I have a roller foot but I find that using a piece of tissue paper (like the kind you wrap gifts with) works best when sewing vinyl.

How do you Jeep the business card/address info from falling out if you don't stitch the vinyl closed? I always put my destination in the luggage tag and it would seem if not secured somehow it would get lost.

I will make one like that to mâche my strips around logadge but I will do extra cover on top so nobody see my name and on back extra pocket with number of flight ...I always forgetting gates number and worry that I loos my documents .....I hate flying and I do this only if I end to and railways in UK a pain in ....everybody knows ....and expensive like ....everybody knows hahaha.
