    I've found that by using calculated shipping that people don't come back and say it is too expensive due to shipping. They know right away what actual shipping is and they'll either make a choice to buy or pass. I don't have to worry about losing money on shipping anymore. Works great.

  • @cincinnatipicker

    This is a great practice. It's really a case by case basis and I've definitely lost A TON of money in the past by not doing calculated shipping.

    I don't get why Ebay gets fees from our shipping charges as well. How is this legal. I don't make money off of my shipping, but ebay gets cut off my shipping fees too. Such a rip off.

      Michael K Goode you can credit ebay charging fees for shipping to people who would charge 99.99 shipping for an item and sell it for 0.01. They started doing this to combat that nonsense.

      Ebay started charging fees on shipping because they where getting scammed by sellers. Remember the early days when somebody would sell an small item that weighed less then 12 oz for $0.99 then charge $30.00 dollars to ship it? People knew if they did this they would pay less or next to no ebay fees, so ebay got smart and decided to add fees to shipping. So blame the people not ebay on added shipping fees.

    I'm a new subscriber to your channel. Your awesome. I started dabbling in Ebay when I got my first iphone (because of the camera) with one! item for fun. Spending about 10 hours a week I average about $1k a month. I deal in a specific item. I will buy these items on Ebay for a cheap price because the seller didn't market it or make it look better than they should have. A typical example - I'll pay $10. I'll spruce it up, clean polish and most importantly my photos are pro grade. I will sell that $10 item for about $70. I'm constantly amazed.
    I've noticed if I list an item for buy it now at a high price and nobody buys it, but had plenty of lookers,,, after about a month, I'll relist it as an auction starting at .99 cents. I will always sell it for close to what I wanted to and these auctions I will always have a very high shipping fee!

    You are AMAZING Lindey! I just subscribed today and I can definitely relate to you. I started my business on Amazon in 2011 and I am successful as an online bookseller and also as a "Pro Seller" with Amazon. I made mistakes in the beginning, but learned from them as well just like you! When my mom became ill, I changed my account to an "Individual Selling Plan" before massive Amazon changes. But WOW .... A LOT has changed! As a result, I ended up having to spend a great deal of time trying to figure out how to make the new changes work for me or figure out whether I needed to branch out into other platforms. Since my mom's recovery, I have upgraded back to my "Pro Seller Account" on Amazon. My listings were always there, but it seemed like they were just that...there. Now, I am making numerous changes but "in it to win it!" Change is good...right? You bet! I am never a quitter and I love a challenge. Challenges are opportunities! Moreover, I will make adjustments because I believe in the possibilities and in what I can do. I agree about what you say about not being complacent and also being willing to branch out into other products for resale. I am currently doing both. I am a book company and I am adding to my portfolio by branching out. I am researching at the same time, but also listing and working on my business and family life. It is so important to research and get the right products out there that people are going to love and that you can have a real business in. Hopefully, sooner than later, a person can decide whether they want a "hobby" or "real business" and the earlier a person decides the better off they will be. I love being an entrepreneur or mompreneur as many moms call it. Nothing beats working from home in my opinion! It is very important about what you said in many of your videos regarding patience and not quitting. Reselling is a viable business that people make a great living in every day but you have to do your "homework" and the work to make it happen. You've done that! It can feel so discouraging if you are successful in a particular platform and big changes seem to put you back at square one. Especially, if you feel like you have to put more in than you think you are going to get in return. However, I believe the possibilities are endless at the moment. The hard thing is not losing focus, managing time wisely and picking the right team or person to work with as you grow. I also believe that many obstacles in business are launch pads or incredible opportunities to "scale and grow!" I think resellers need to be careful about who they get advice from with the wealth of good and bad information that is out there and that is why I am so happy I found your channel! I love how real and helpful you are! Thank you for sharing what you know! It is much appreciated! I love this video about the various ways of shipping and offers too. I have always done free USPS Priority shipping, but with the price of shipping rising rapidly, I needed to hear what you had to say in this video. Additionally, I wanted to learn more about Ebay and have been holding back due to various negative videos about the platform and about paypal. However, after watching your videos, I am convinced that it is an excellent platform if you know how to ebay the "right" or best way. You are SO encouraging and FUN to watch too! You definitely have the experience to back up what you are saying! Keep up the great work! You are an absolute CHAMPION! :-) Always Your Goodnewzs- Teresa

    As with your "11 mistakes... ...." video, in this video, you offer very valuable insight for those who might venture down the same path as you. Your presentation is excellent and your presence is very impressionable. One thing that attests to one's intelligence is their ability to recognize mistakes, to learn from them and then correct them by changing their thinking. You are obviously very good at doing this. I love your "bubblelyness", if there is such a word. (and there isn't) You are a good person and it seems that you work hard at your craft; I wish all the best for you. Keep practising to say, "nine nine nine nine ... " even though you do it so well anyway. GOOD LUCK AND KEEP PUSHING AHEAD. ; )

    There goes that Pittsburg Mike influence. I started charging shipping on most of my jeans. Plus i'm imposing a 20% restocking fee if free shipping was provided and it's a fit issue. I'm tired of eating free shipping when buyers don't read measurements. The restocking fee will usually cover about half of the shipping cost.

    • @FloridaForForever
      @FloridaForForever 7 років тому +4

      Yep I am the same only I charge 10%...NEVER do free shipping its giving $$ away....I do a flat rate of $6.75 for 16 oz or less (first class) or 1-2 lbs is priority is flat rate $6.70, 2 lbs is $7.50, 3 lbs is 8.50 and so on..I do MOST times use a flat rate bubble mailer no matter the pound it weighs when I can for clothes etc.....We sell LPs too on another store..I charge $6.25 media mail for the first pound...CD flat rate is $4.75...the extra $$ pays for the bubble wrap, tissue paper, boxes, tape, ink, etc...We also sell other things that do require special fragile wrapping....

    Question....how are you going to know a shipping price for an item over a pound, and not fitting in a "of it fits it ships box" if you have no idea where you need to ship it to?

  • @ZefTillDeath8878
    @ZefTillDeath8878 7 років тому +60

    I've quit free shipping in December and it was the right decision. Ebay claims you get up to 11% more sales with free shipping, but I think that's just because sellers will tend to undervalue their items and miscalculate their shipping costs. The buyer will get a better deal (at your loss), so they are more likely to purchase the item.
    I will have to disagree with you on best offer though. It's great if you are trying to move inventory as fast as possible, but I think people see that and think "they must be desperate to get rid of this" and that devalues the item to them, when some would pay full price. I just gradually lower the price of most of my items by 10% every cycle until it sells. Keeps stale inventory moving and I get a better return than I would with best offer.

    • @lostintime8651
      @lostintime8651 7 років тому

      I mostly buy things that have the shipping included in the price. I hate the word free. Nothing is free. But sometimes I am limited to who is selling something I need and I have no choice but to pay for shipping. So if only 2-5 people have listed the item I am looking to purchase, then I buy either the cheapest one or the one I will get sooner.

      Joe H you might be over thinking the buyers mentality with the best offer. I've noticed I get more traction on best offer listings. I guess it really just depends on the item. If you have something that sells quickly and is highly sought after, there's really no need to include best offer

    • @faust310
      @faust310 7 років тому

      You can also just edit you're search results to item + shipping lowest price because the cheapest one's are usually not the FREE ones because the seller has to calculate the price into the cost. Like the comment below me says compare everything then go with the cheapest. Someone can still offer same day or 1 day handling time but not free shipping & still be cheaper & just as fast.

  • @LalaCats3
    @LalaCats3 7 років тому +2

    I think whatever works for you is what you should do. Personally, I only do free shipping, mostly because buyers can search specifically for it. I have tried auctions now and then, but they are high maintenance and a pain in the keester, especially when buyers don't pay. I also steer clear of best offer, though some people send me offers anyway. Sometimes I accept their offer, and sometime I counter, and it ends up good on both sides. What I am doing works for me.

    Makes sense! When I shop on eBay I filter by lowest price w/ shipping rather than just searching for it w/ free shipping. I don't care how the total cost to purchase is divided between item cost & shipping cost. I just want the lowest total price for what I'm looking to buy, period.
    Also, when you offer free shipping & a buyer wants to return it & they're required to cover the return shipping, how do you do the initial purchase price refund? Do you just eat the original cost of shipping since it was included in the price?

    • @kathyrice3015

    I'm just starting out so right now i'm doing free shipping with low prices (so I break even) but most of these are personal items that i'm just looking to get rid of. What I intend to do once I establish a bit of history is offer free shipping at a certain price point. I've noticed that retailers will offer free shipping at $50 - $100 and not even as a standard as they used to. Now they will do it typically when they're running a sale. I intend to follow that model and see how it does. I will only do that for my new with tags items though I think.

    I agree with you, as a power seller then TRS for the last 11 years i stopped free shipping as the customer ALWAYS pays for return shipping (for my items anyway). with free shipping there is more of a tendency for returns. plus when they return (only for changing their mind, not defective products) the shipping charge isn't refunded.
    Remember Final Value fee's are on the items price NOT including shipping so $15 plus free shipping has a fvf of $15 vs $10 + $5 shipping has a fvf of only $10. obviously pros and cons of both

      Lilly V LA Uh yeah you are the reason why us sellers are having to pay fees to ebay on our shipping too. overcharging on your shipping is costing all of us sellers. EBay not only gets a cut of the item a person is selling, but the shipping charges as well. They started doing this because morons like you are making profit off of your shipping and not the item.

    Hi Lindey, I made the huge mistake of listing a couple of items internationally without seeing the costs first. A person from Russia purchased a pair of ski pants, the shipping was $62. I cancelled that sucker. Another was to England, a tee shirt, $13 dollars but I had put down $10 to ship so I sent that one. It's all about learning every day. Thanks for your videos.

      Michael P Use the Global shipping program. You only pay for the shipping to Ebay headquarters in USA. EBay ships it to them from their headquarters. it's as easy as clicking one button on your listing.

    i did free shipping for about 2 months. i went back to the old way. i lost money on several items during that 2 months. id rather make less than straight up lose money. i first started doing all DVDs all the time and nothing else.....i always did free shipping on those because they all cost the same pretty much to ship......give or take 20 cents. my sales may have dropped 5% or so each month when i stopped the free shipping.....but nothing notable.

    I stopped doing free shipping and just do flat rate for all items. I only sell retail arbitrage though. So all first class gets $3.99 and all Priority gets $7.99. Unless it’s heavy like shoes...then maybe $8 or $9. But I haven’t had any issues. If it’s a really small item going first class sometimes I’ll offer free shipping. But you have made me want to look into both opening up to Offers and Auctions. I don’t do any of those. I’m a very Fixed price seller. Hmm 🤔. Thanks for another great video! ❤️

    Another great video. I LOVE my best offer. That's where 90% of my sales come from. I also price my items about $2-$3 higher because 1. I ALWAYS have a good sale running and 2. When the buyer sends a best offer its closer to the amount I am willing to take!! I also do the same with free shipping, if I offer FS I do NOT accept best offer. And I only do FS on first class items or really expensive items that ship flat rate.

    This is why I donated everything under $20. I do not have a listing below $59 and my average is $80 w/ free ship. I pay no more than $5 for items. Even at 50% discount I never lose money. I usually set my best offer criteria to reject anything 60% lower than asking so I don't need to deal with those low ball nuts. I have no emotional attachment to my items. I buy them to sell. If I get a $100 offer on a $139 item I paid $5 for I accept and move on.

      if you have a brand new account you will be restricted for 30 days. After that you can very slowly request increases in your limits. eBay wants to make sure that you aren't a seller who is opening multiple accounts to sell a flood of merchandise to buyers, taking their money and never sending merchandise (among other things). It takes a good 90 days before they start cutting you some slack.

    I’m new to selling on eBay and just had an issue with free shipping myself. I prefer to be able to offer it, I know as a buyer I’m more likely to go with something with free shipping. But I had several extremely lowball offers on an item over the weekend. None of my counter offers were excepted, the buyer even waited out the time until it ended then sent another lowball offer a dollar different from their previous one! I declined and removed best offer and relisted the item at a lower price with paid shipping. 24hrs later the same buyer purchased the item, the total was exactly what my original listing was for. Now I realize the buyer is not thinking about how much I’m out for shipping, only what it’s costing them to purchase. I’m going through all my listings now and changing the prices and shipping so no more of that! I also sold an item for a great price just before all of that and had free shipping which ended up costing over half the amount I got for the item, saddest moment in my eBay selling so far!

      Danielle McGrath You have to get more sells and feedback. they will up your limit. a quick way to do that is sell some items cheap an easy. Like coupons, recipes. easy stuff like that. EBay will keep upping your limit. you got to show you are trustworthy!

    I've tried both and dislike "free" shipping in general. I think it's misleading. I also don't like shipping gouging. I think it's better that the buyer sees exactly what he / she is spending. I still have few items that have free shipping but they are the exception.

  • @johndriver7260
    @johndriver7260 7 років тому

    I vacillate back and forth on giving free shipping or not because I see more overall views and believe you receive favored item placement in searches. But on some items like jeans and shoes have never given free shipping. Mostly on shirts/tops, hats, DVD's, CD's mostly light weight items. I think changing your listing in some way helps views also and so the change from free shipping to not can have that effect also.

  • @wcgems

    I use free shipping if the markup is crazy high. Like if I pay 1 or 2 dollars and can sell for somewhere around 14 or 15 and weight isnt too much. I have started selling high markup item with personally discounted shipping. Kind like half the cost of actual shipping. I build my half into the price and the buyer thinks he is getting a deal of shipping.

    How do you figure out the shipping cost? You don't know what area the customer is buying from til item is purchased. Do you come up with shipping price based upon area of country where you get customers from the most? Also would like to see you do a video breakdown of how to calculate your profit after item has sold. Want to make sure I'm doing it correctly. Love your videos. Thank you for your suggestions.

    • @princessshay77420

      if your items are 16 oz or under, and you use first class, then the shipping price is based on weight, not distance, so it's important to weigh items in the packaging before listing in order to determine the appropriate shipping.
      If you use flat rate envelopes or boxes, then your shipping price is a flat rate no matter where it's going.
      If you are shipping heavier items and don't/can't use flat rate, then you use can calculated shipping which will be based on the buyers zip code, the weight & measurements of the package, and shipping service.
      She has a Total Profits VS. Individual Profits video and a profit spreadsheet that you can download-just check her videos list. You would calculate your profit by subtracting what you paid plus all the ebay & paypal fees and shipping (if you did free shipping)

    • @muze2012

      Thank you for this info. So to calculate the profit for example if you bought something for $4 and sold it for $30.00 you basically subtract the $4 from the $30.00 then subtract shipping, ebay fees, and pay pal then you would get the profit? What is the difference when you charging shipping? Thanks once again for info.

    • @princessshay77420
      @princessshay77420 7 років тому

      when you charge the buyer shipping, it does not count towards your total profit, because it goes towards shipping.

    Shipping is ridiculous in Canada flat rate is for 5kg and under, the cheapest is letter mail but max height is 2cm, only option is small or light parcel which starts at about $10.70CAD and weight restriction is two kilos. Light cheap items are hard to sell in Canada. I have items for sale $4.99 and shipping costs more than my item :(

  • @teafortwo9307

    • @LindeyGlenn
      @LindeyGlenn  7 років тому +1

      Amber Griffin ebay will get their fees on the total the buyer pays. so if the buyer pays $14.99 and free shipping they take their final value fee on $14.99. if the buyer pays $10 plus $4.99 shipping then ebay takes their final value fee on $14.99 - how it's divided up doesn't matter. all that matters is the total purchase price with shipping included
