Thank you Gary! Very helpful concise explanation of the various ways to drag and drop. Just got a new Macbook pro in 7/22 (my previous Macbook died just shy of its 10 year anniversary BOO) and been struggling a bit getting used to some changes in trackpad behavior.
Kinesthetic subtleties (how hard is a tap vs a click, what is the timing between clicks that evokes different outcomes, etc.) are generally underappreciated and under-discussed and probably because kinesthetic language is under-used most people find it difficult to represent what happens kinesthetically leaving it under-discussed and round and round. Thank you for taking a good shot at a difficult subject. My clients and I appreciate the work you put in to make these videos available.
Oh thank you I found how to get my lovely gesture from Windows - double tap and drag. But it is weird because I had it by default on Windows and here are I need to go through 4-5 panels
These are some great tips. I'm going to rewatch several times, so that hopefully the next time I encounter a need to drag and drop, I can employ these methods. Thank you.

So that’s the distinction between tapping and touching! I don’t have a trackpad but I think this explains the difficulty I have with iPhone touch, assuming iPhone functions in the same way.
thank you so much!!! i just bought the m2 air, upgrading from a 2011 MacBook pro. I have no idea why they would disable the dragging option in future models. i was worried sick cause lets be honest, click & drag is ridiculous!
What annoys me about dragging in Monterey is dragging between full-screen apps, e.g. dragging a file into a browser form, which is open in full-screen mode. On my old Mac with Catalina installed it works seemlessly simply "picking up" the file with thumb and pointing finger, holding the thumb down and swipe to the next full-screen space with 3 or 4 fingers. In Monterey it often jumps back while performing the swipe and then I need to lift all except for one finger (except the pressed thumb) to "finish" the swipe
Hi Gary, don't know if you look at comments from your older videos. I've been using 3-finger drag-n-drop on my laptop ever since you showed it to us here, it's fantastic. HOWEVER, just now I discovered something else: when it is enabled, you can ALSO use 3 fingers to drag-select text, without touching any modifier key! I've tried it on EweTube and in Pages, and I assume it works everywhere else. Neat!
Thanks Gary for this very useful video! I have a question about the "Without Drag Lock" mode: is it possible to reduce or eliminate the delay when you lift your finger? I know you can just tap on the trackpad to prevent further dragging, but using even Windows laptops it's hard to get used to two different drag and drop modes. Thank you!
you should also explain quick drag and drop from Desktop to the Finder. or somewhere else. or Sending a Drag and Drop file to WhatsApp. or other App (specially from Desktop)
Drag and drop used to work with Control+Click (full click) but that quit working a couple of months ago and the behavior changed to some Spotlight Preview idiocy. I looked at Apple forums and most solutions suggest restarting in safe mode and then I quit reading because I recognize stupid when I see it. The Macbook needs Clippy, "Oh! It looks like you're trying to drag-and-drop".
Are you trying to drag out of the results of a Spotlight search (using the Spotlight menu, Command+Space)? If so, don't Control+click, just a plain drag will do it.
Do not forget to tell about the tap delay you will get when enabling dragging. Thats the reason I am not using this, your work really gets slowed down when enabling dragging. Every single tap (click) gets delayed then.
One thing that I really LOVE about Mac track pad is the 3-finger drag. I was just wondering: is there a way to make it work if you get to the edge while dragging?
Thank you Gary, it's a bit awkward and uncomfortable, but seems like if I "click" with three fingers and then drag with another finger, it does the 3-finger drag. The only downside with this is that I need to anticipate if it's gonna reach the edge or not (but I guess that's also the case for the "normal" case reaching the edge)
I got a Magic Trackpad with my M1 iMac, but I never use it because of things like this. I use an external mouse instead, but I understand the appeal of the trackpad on a laptop. I just find the mouse easier, and with extra side buttons, I have access to Launchpad, Mission Control, App Expose and Show Desktop. Still, good to learn the trackpad because there's a Macbook in my future anyway.
Hi - thanks for the video. How come on my sidebar I am unable to click and drag my bookmarks? Whenever I click to drag it, it just highlights it to rename. However, I am able to click/drag items on my desktop and everywhere else. Thanks in advance! - Mary
I'm currently trying to copy a folder from an old laptop onto a USB drive but to no avail though unfortunately, so with that being said judging from what you've explained in this video here, I can simply copy and paste this folder onto my USB then? did I understand that correctly?.
I have a MacBoo Pro M2, and the drag and drop is not working. I am physically disabled md cannot use two fingers. I use to be able to click and hod for 3 seconds, then drag wth a trackball, the click again to release. This function stopped working with the M2. Is there a way to turn the drag/drop back on? Thankyou for your advice.
Once you have dragged into file. How do you save it once you dragged in a particular order to not go back to arranged by Jpg number order. I spent so much time dragging images in a certain order for video but when I sent to editor it was all out of order. How do you save in the order you dragged it in. Help😫
As files? There is no way to manually order files. If you want to send them to someone and have them use an order in a project, then supply them with a list of filenames in order, or rename them all so they are alphabetical.
Hey Gary, I’m a MacBook Pro owner and my charging cable has been damaged and therefore as a result I’m currently unable to use the laptop etc. Here’s the deal I’m currently in a country that’s under economic sanctions, my point is there isn’t easy access to Apple products here, so with that being said for the time being it looks like I have to rely on a close alternative charging cable though. When I plug both ends in with this alternative charging cable I’m met with a black screen and empty battery icon. With that being said, does that mean I should leave it to charge up for a while then?
Hard to say. If your Mac is recent, you can charge through any of the USB-C ports and use almost any charger. But get one with a decent amount of power. A small 5W phone charger isn't enough. Get one close to the W on the original charger.
I just bought a new M3 iMac. My windows go to the left in a column and I can’t drag and drop between windows. How do I fix that? I only ever have one active window at a time because the others sit in that bay on the left.
@@nicholashunt5230 The only update to iMovie was today and it was to allow importing of the new video project types from iMovie for iOS. So nothing new by itself. The new iOS version does have those two new project types, which look interesting, but not sure if I'll be doing tutorials on them. Have you tried them yet? They are basically "wizards" for creating video projects.
@@macmost Yes, I was referring to the iOS version of iMovie. The "wizards" are very interesting in how they work. Zollotech did a pretty good demonstration of them on his UA-cam channel.
Leave it to a Post-Jobs Apple to veritably shit the bed on a function that worked just fine for decades. The English language doesn't even contain enough curse words to allow me to communicate my sentiments on the current iteration of drag-and-drop via the trackpad on a MacBook. Unreal.
I want to be able to tap and drag with one finger without having to double tap first or use 3 fingers. I also don’t want to wait a fraction of a second for it to drop. Why is this so hard?
As a windows / chrome / linux user (with trackpads) I've tried MACOS on numerous occasions and noticed erratic behaviour with the double tap, drag implementation. Assuming we're moving a window / dialogue box, 1 of 2 things sometimes happens a). after an operation (i.e. 2x tap, drag, release), a fresh operation within a short time fails to grab the dialogue window. b). after an operation, the movable item still moves, as if draglock WAS enabled (but it's not). This has done my head in for last 10 years+... but after watching this, I now see it's an issue because of MACOS implementing PARTIAL draglock, even when it's OFF. Whilst this might be ok in the engineers eye's, anyone used to ALL other OS's implementations (and drivers) for the touchpad, this is totally unhelpful. I realise they prob think this clever, but it's actually deterimental to usability. If drag lock is OFF, it should be ALWAYS OFF
Meant to add, any NON mac user would likely enable double tap drag (without draglock) to mimic their previous (and the majority market share) devices. This was the settings I use and has to be enabled (as per the video) as a special accessibility option (which in itself beggars belief), as well as "tap to click" being OFF.... Why oh why.
Hey Gary thanks for the video as always man I had a quick question I’ve been looking at a whole bunch of videos and I can’t find the question anywhere every time I change A Folder from list few to icon view etc. it forces every other folder to do that I want each folder to be separate for icon list etc. do you know how to do that I’ve changed the finder preferences I’ve changed the general everything and nothing‘s working thanks man.
It is all about how you are traveling to the "other folder." For instance, if you open up 3 Finder tabs looking at 3 different locations, and you set the first tab to Icon View, and the other two to List View, then you'll see different views in those different tabs. But if you dig down from one folder to another in the same tab, it will stay in Icon View.
At the end of the day, the only viable way is to use the thumb and index finger. I do realise though that many people have trouble getting used to it, especially when they have to use a mouse at work for example.
Hi, on older macs you could click in with your thumb, drag a file with your index, and then release your thumb click and the file would drop and you could start moving your index finger without having to lift your index finger from the trackpad which would then move the pointer so you could get on with your next task, now with the newer macs it seems you HAVE to release both fingers? This is most noticeable to me on Google maps when I am looking around on Streetview which I do quite regularly. Can you confirm if there is any way to tweak this or am I stuck having to lift both fingers?! It's far inferior from a user experience point of view. Thanks!
I usually release both fingers. I don't think it would work with one finger still dragging. I mean my index finger is barely moving a millimeter up so it isn't an issue.
@@macmost thanks for the reply. My last macbook before this new one was the late 2013 model, honestly you should try an old one and compare, it's so much better! Let me know if you do try it! Or come across a way to tweak the new ones to operate like the old ones did. Thanks very much 👍🏻

@@patriciapinto6208 Oh, sorry, I misunderstood your initial comment then. If you don't have a backup, then you are probably out of luck. Remember to start a backup ASAP so it doesn't happen again.
OK, maybe e I missed it, but you never discussed how to do this with a mouse… some of us do not like track pads… I have Ventura, and out of nowhere a few days a go it stopped working… which is a real pain… I currently have to screen cap on my computer, then drag it into a folder, then it will let me rename the file… oh, and I also can no longer drag a URL and save it… the only way past this is to share or mail the url (if available) and copy paste the URL from the mail, and then copy paste it onto an indesign file… what a pain… help? if you can, much appreciate it
This is a video for those having trouble dragging and dropping with a trackpad. (See the description). Not sure what the problem could be from your description. Go out and buy a Logitech multi button wireless mouse. With rechargeable batteries. Then you can mess with the software on the mac. Then I can drag-and-drop switch things on and off. Do whatever I want without taking my hand off the mouse.

👍
Thanks very much 👍🏻
I prefer to use 1 finger drag, how do i enable?
One finger drag? Nothing to enable, you can do that if you want.
@@macmost for some reason i cant
No. it doesn't work with me in online drive :\
I am in deep trouble and wonder if you can help me. Yesterday after a made an factory reset on my iMac I have accidently deleted all my data and emptied my bin. So I don’t have any Time Machine point to go to. Can you advice me a trust software for me to recover that data. I am desperate. I know that it’s not free but I just lose money and keep the problem.
Sorry, I don't have a recommendation for that. But you said you do have a Time Machine backup? Just restore from that. Go to the Time Machine drive in the Finder, look at the top right and you'll see "Enter Time Machine."
@@macmost I do not have a Time Machine backup. Ty anyway
Sounds like you certainly know how to drag and drop, just that you changed something and things aren't working now. Check through your Mouse settings and Accessibility settings.
@@macmost Didnt see the track pad part, just the drag and drop, my bad, well I've been dragging and dropping for decades… I used to screen cap everything, till I discovered the drag and drop… anyhow, apparently this issue is an issue, unfortunately so far, the suggested fixes dont work… guess apple is next… thanks
when i drag and drop files into a folder, the folder opens with this action. is there any option to stay in the previous screen? thanks.
A quick drag-and-drop shouldn't open the folder. Maybe try a different Finder view?
@@macmost thanks.
Still... boring solution for dragging an insta printscreened file (option+shift+3).
It used to be much simpler... just moved from my Mac Air 2012 to a new a Mac Air M2. I thought my trackpad was broken.
people want to know how to decrease the inertia? delay with one one finder tap to drag method... because its way too long
Go out and buy a Logitech multi button wireless mouse. With rechargeable batteries. Then you can mess with the software on the mac. Then I can drag-and-drop switch things on and off. Do whatever I want without taking my hand off the mouse.
You the man, Gary!
