The perfect accompaniment to your morning coffee is, unsurprisingly, a confection known as coffee cake. Containing no actual coffee, it is instead a lightly sweetened pound cake that's essentially just a vehicle to get streusel into your mouth as quickly and efficiently as possible. Maybe just make the streusel part and eat it by the spoonful if nobody is around to judge you.

When you had guests in the afternoon, and served coffee, these kinds of cakes would be brought out. They were always considered "for company" and so were verboten to kids for everyday eating. Originally, they weren't usually super moist, and the coffee balanced out the cake flavors very well.

For the UK, 'coffee' cake over the pond means cake you eat with a cup of coffee, NOT cake flavoured with coffee. I made that discoverly a few years back and am still finding it hard to overcome the disappointment. .
