Nassar went all out, did 181 and attempted 224. He tried to push the WR up from 396 all the way to 405; he didn't play around with 397, 398, 399, etc... like many champs would. He missed but his spirit is truly admirable. Put the WR as high as you can while you can still do it. No matter how old you are, where you are in your career, you never know when injury will kick in and it'll be your last rodeo. Lift at every competition knowing you would have no regrets if it were your last. That's what I like about Nassar. China has many champions and many dominant lifters but we play around too much, inching the WR up 1kg at a time. Lu Xiaojun, Shi Zhiyong, etc... like to get a snatch WR then, lift just enough in the clean and jerk to get a total record and quit. They would only attempt a clean and jerk WR if the snatch WR failed. They never put max snatch and max clean and jerk together like Nassar did. I bet Shi regrets it now. He could have done 170+200 in his prime but he saved it and played with 1kg WRs until his time was up and now he has no choice but to watch younger guys take his WRs away.
The most important takeaway from this competition is that it seems Karlos has finally stabilized his snatch - 3/3, with a comfortable 181. It is a bit surprising that he missed the 224 c&j but it is not the end of the world, I guess that he has focused on the snatch considering that he has 220+ on the c&j anytime. If I am right, that's the much better strategy for the longer term. In Paris he will only need a stable snatch around 180 so he is at least on par with Yeison and then anything around 220+ and he will be untouchable for the gold. The records will come inevitably, it is not absolutely necessary at the Olympics - we wish but it is moreimportant to get the Olympic gold and to be healthy and keep himself away from troubles outside of sports. With this rate of progress we may see 185+ and 230+ some day which will put him in the company of all-time greatest in 89/90/91.
good point, Rahmat is good example of weightlifter that rely only on c&j and this time his c&j let him down, as a result he isn't going to the olympics, such a pity..
The name of the Bulgarian coach that established Colombian weightlifting on elite level was Gancho Karushkov, he was Colombian national coach for several years (around 2000). He was among the top coaches in Bulgaria in the 80s, among his athletes are names such as Asen Zlatev for example.
Another Bulgarian coach - Konstantin Darov, had been national coach for Venezuela, Dominican Republic and Mexico. But I think the contribution of Karushkov for Colombian WL was fundamental, I believe he even established a national sports school and was awarded honorary citizen title in Colombia
20 tons first training of the day, then followed by 70 in two more sessions as normal weightlifting day? Bulgarian lifting day. You must have hit your goal I am sure of it.

What those guys (as it is not only Karlos, but he is by far the most accomplished) is incredible. Karlos had to pay for the surgery of one of his teammates in the national team, as they delay their salaries 6-12 months very often.
