    Love this footage, everything I could hope for from you guys at the competition! Would really love to see you guys get some translators on your staff and chat with the Chinese/Korean/Russian speakers. I know politically you might not get much out of them, but having these quick chats with people is really great for that tiny bit of insight.
    There seem to be a lot of North Korean weightlifters named "Ri - 리(?)". I wonder if that's just coincidence or there's some family magic involved there.

    Concerning the Bak/Lee battle. I believe Phuket was Lee’s 1st comp at 73, he’d been 67 for quite a while and I remember thinking why did he wait till the last comp (for Paris qualifying) to move up. It seemed he could have used more time to get used to his new weight. Now he’s had most of a year; things could be different this time around.

    Kinda fucked up watching the North Korean athletes destroying their bodies for the sake of their oppressive country. It's a different perspective to watching an athlete push through an injury for the love of the sport. It's hard to know if the North Koreans enjoy competing or not. I'd love to see an interview with one.

      What you need to understand is this is world championship competition. When it comes to this level any sport becomes no fun but only winning and record creating. All the athletes competing at this level is for some legendary moment it doesn’t matter to which country because that’s the no.1 of 8 human being. This is why white people like Aussies cannot win in such a sports because the spirits behind it is like what you described as fun to compete or fun to lift. Sorry chilled guys, this level is not for fun.

    Idk is it just me or is North Korea being allowed to compete kind of make the notion of a cleaner IWF a fucking joke?
    Look, it's naive to think that certain athletes are automatically clean by virtue of coming from certain countries, but there is a world of difference between countries that lack transparency and are most definitely running state-sponsored doping programs (like say North Korea and other authoritarian/countries that are more prone to corruption) and those that don't. Now I'm not that "everyone from a western country is clean," it's that the odds of someone getting past the testing process in a western country are far far lower. There’s a difference between someone acting in bad faith on their own, and a state-sponsored sponsored doping regime. Especially in a country where anti doping can’t even reach you if they tried. And if you think these kinds of countries aren't running state-sponsored doping programs, oh my innocent sweet summer child...
    When the anti-doping agencies of some countries are proved to actively work *for the dopers* time and time again, why should we even entertain their bullshit? This is the exact sort of BS that got weightlifting removed from the olympics before being reinstated.
    Now to cap it off, I think its awesome to see such strong athletes that are breaking records, and just pushing the sport forward overall. I mean who doesn't like to see records being broken? But to keep up the pretense that somehow the IWF is cleaner with countries like NK present is a joke and that's what I have a problem with, that there is somehow a perception its cleaner because when countries like NK can compete, it sure as hell aint. I guess this brings up the whole argument of whether or not anti-doping as a whole is effective or if we can ever be close to a 100% clean sport, and just how it could be done? Because its impossible to have the same standards of testing or ethics when there are so many different countries with different systems and values.
    I can go further with this and say that the olympics in general shouldn't allow countries like North Korea to compete at all, because of how repressive it is. I mean why can they compete when apartheid South Africa or Taliban-led Afghanistan were very rightfully banned? Where is the consistency here?

    • @miljanmandic9633
      @miljanmandic9633 7 днів тому

      they cant just ban them because they don't trust them. They will almost surely get banned again soon enough but international federations have to go through processes to be legitimately fair.
      in terms of politics its even more complex. One for the north Korean people it would only hurt them to straight up isolate them, and would only build further resentment and help the government in the long term. Very few North Koreans get to see and interact with the rest of the world, sports its one of the few opportunities to show good face. It is hard to get through the propaganda especially in North Korea but when you look during the cold war the exposure was definitely a net positive despite the propaganda value of winning. Also just banning them would be used as propaganda as it would seem they were just banned for being too good.
      another important factor which separates NK from apartheid South Africa or Taliban-led Afghanistan is NK does have international friends. These are international competitions, if you start removing lots of countries it wont be international anymore. Having situations 80 and 84 are not good for the legitimacy of international competitions.
      The best thing to do is ultimately just trying to be better. Olivia Reeves beating song was definitely a huge blow.
      The west does have one very important advantage... money overall money and populations size are the most important predictors of success. The countries with better anti doping also tend to be much wealthier, which levels the playing field.
      There is no easy solution just gotta do what you can.

      @@bb-6359 i think the answer to your sharp question about whether anti-doping as a whole is effective is self-evident from the commentary you provided - including your comment about wanting to see strong athletes breaking records. We all want to see big lifts. Maybe the real question is what is the purpose of the IWF? to increase viewership and entertain the public, or protect the safety and security of the athletes? I think the answer might be hard for us all to swallow, given that we are all complicit in this giant charade
