Earthworm Jim one of the best action-platformers of the nineties. The Genesis version is the original release and, compared to the SNES port, remains the best. Genesis higher resolution is a huge advantage and this reason alone almost seals the deal but there's more: better animation, more sounds, more levels... SNES might have a few added visual effects but on other hand lost too much during the transition.

    • @81giorikas

SNES has better colors e no dithering, sharper sound quality (fm synth on genesis sounds like fake midi crap from old computers. Voices sounds like voices, not like garbage. Genesis always struggles with that). The only thing inferior on SNES versions is the window size.

    • @Keystone-Keypers
      @Keystone-Keypers 4 роки тому +7

@@amakyusa no, snes has got muffled sound, Fm synth sound suits better here, hear the drums sound, its clearer, not to mention a lot of effects on the water stage that is missing compared to the Genesis. As for the dithering, it wasn't noticeable back in the day when most players used crt sets along with composite cable or RF. Fã boy do crl

Snes has a better voice capturer and is smoother to hear. The genesis had a a electronic crisp ro the voice sample. But I don’t see the differences.

    • @anen9332
      @anen9332 2 роки тому +1

@@Keystone-Keypers The dithering on Genesis was always noticeable on CRT. The SNES had much better variety and amount of color onscreen. This idea that it wasn't noticeable on TVs at the time is complete nonsense: I had both these consoles back then, and the SNES simply looked much better on average when it came to onscreen color output.
That's not really surprising when considering the specs of each console: the SNES had a palette of 32,000 colors and could display 256 simultaneously, while the Genesis had a color palette of 512 colors with only 64 being displayed onscreen simultaneously.
This game is also another example of the SNES managing proper transparency effects while the Genesis is stuck with a very obvious mesh "effect".
Nonetheless, I always considered the Genesis version to be superior for Earthworm Jim. From my recollection, the Genesis has more voice clips, more animation and an extra level. These advantages pushed me to buy it way back when on Genesis rather than SNES; there was always the sense that this was a Genesis game that was ported to the SNES.

  • @videogameobsession
    @videogameobsession 5 років тому +16

The SNES definitely has some interesting changes, and they aren't all bad. The added lens flare, for example, is kind of cool. I remember EGM raving about it when they played the demo at CES. There is overall a higher color count, and therefore less dithering used. This is also visible on Jim's close up shots are easy to see on his smoother looking shoulders and back.
There are also some backgrounds showing added parallax scrolling and more transparencies, as well as brand new backgrounds.
Here are some things I've noticed:
    1. New Junk City - ua-cam.com/video/eYaJke21s0E/v-deo.html SNES version has less dithering in BG, lens flare effect, but also looks a bit faded and less colorful. Conveyor belt has a neat texture to it, where as the Gen is a flat grey color.
    2. What the Heck? - ua-cam.com/video/eYaJke21s0E/v-deo.html - SNES version has multiple parallax BG layers, Genesis does not. SNES version also has far less dithering w/higher color count. Ground level smog uses transparency layers on SNES.
Boss stage has a background on the SNES. ua-cam.com/video/eYaJke21s0E/v-deo.html
    3. Down the Tubes - ua-cam.com/video/eYaJke21s0E/v-deo.html SNES version has a bit more detail in the bubble glass, but lacks the cool line scroll effect. Strangely this effect is also missing from the Win 95 Special Edition as well.
    4. Snot a problem - ua-cam.com/video/eYaJke21s0E/v-deo.html SNES version - has some nice clouds at the top.
Andy Asteroids - ua-cam.com/video/eYaJke21s0E/v-deo.html SNES uses transparent rings where as the Genesis uses verticle dither patterns on both the rings as well as the background. Other Andy Asteroids also use a red version
    5. Level 5 - ua-cam.com/video/eYaJke21s0E/v-deo.html SNES has multiple BG layers of parallax scrolling where as the Genesis only has a single layer, with more dithering.
    6. Buttville - ua-cam.com/video/eYaJke21s0E/v-deo.html SNES BG was made a little easier to see.

For down the tubes, the line scrolling effect was actually done with a Megadrive hardware feature. I think it's called column shift or something like that? It's shifting different columns of tiles up and down in waves, which is something the SNES couldn't do.

    • @videogameobsession

What surprises me is that the SNES was inferior to the genesis in terms of cartridge storage space and nobody mentions this. the SNES ROMs lose a lot of space to the sound samples needed for the music. Its a common theme for SNES versions of games to lack sound effects, songs, and entire levels due to all the storage being taken up by music sound samples on top of larger capacity cartridges being more expensive to produce on SNES.

I'd rather stick with the 16 bit versions any day unless I'm running SEGA CD on an emulator, which cuts the load times significantly. lol.

There are too many missing sound effects [That can't go unnoticed unless you never played genesis or win95 version].
And those missing SFX actually ruins the immersion.
And there are missing animations, but that is not as noticeable.
Then the 3rd level "Down the Tubes" contain wrong music on Snes for some reason. It's dev's fault though cause the music isn't missing, its there in the Snes on Level 5.
Now the musics are totally preference. I like the genesis music but then again I like the music of last 2 levels on Snes better. But normal SFX are too much muffled on Snes.
And then there's one level missing.
The backgrounds on Snes are much better though [The sun glare effect totally kicks ass]. Transparency effects are also missing on Genesis [As you can see on What the Heck level].
Snes port of EWJ 1 felt rushed [Unlike EWJ2].
I played the Windows 95 port first which was the best one possible [Since it contained everything]. Colors were much better and all there were additional levels and animations. It was basically a port of Sega CD with enhancements. Then again, I don't like the music from Sega CD/ Win 95 version. And it still missed the sun glare effect from Snes.
And then there's this another PC port, talking about the MS Dos port. This one's available on Steam. Avoid it at all costs. It is a port of Snes [Misses Intestinal distress like Snes] but it doesn't have sun glare effect. But that's not the reason its trash. It's the controls. They are unresponsive and barely functional. Choppy at best. It's the worst, trust me.
And then there's the cringy HD version on Ps3 and Xbox 360. Gameloft ruined it. Avoid the HD version too unless you like cringe and lame voice acting and presentation.
*In the end, if you wanna enjoy Earthworm Jim 1. Then you may try Genesis, Win 95, Sega CD or Snes port. Yeah, even though Snes port was lacklustre, its still better than other trash like Ms Dos and HD version and you will still enjoy it since the controls weren't compromised.*

    Piece of jewel!!!!
My first choice would be the Sega Genesis version.
Those of us who know programming know and are very clear about the following:
    1) the genesis had twice the processing power capacity of the snes.
It is very fast and never slows down.
It makes the game much smoother and more enjoyable to play
    2) the famous mode 7 of the snes and the 3d rotations, the genesis could do them without the need for special chips for that, and that is clearly demonstrated in many games of the time.
    3) By the processor could achieve much more moving wallpapers and Sprites on screen etc...
    4) as everyone mistakenly believes, the genesis did not have a simultaneous color limitation and its available color palette was not 512, in fact that was the base and more colors came out of it, reaching almost 2,000 available colors, and about 200 simultaneously colors in moving images.
    5) the famous transparencies of the snes genesis could be achieved without any problem with the light and shadow technique and had two other techniques to achieve it, dithering and by frames.
    6) the sound of the genesis is much clearer because it does not use samples, but instead generates the audio itself with an internal instrument it has, and generates it in real time and could also play samples such as voices in a completely clear way, being able to achieve not only one but three channels of samples for it sounding at the same time.
The quality depended on the quality of the sample that was introduced, that it was more or less compressed.
But it did not depend on the machine.
    7) While the snes only worked with samples and for that reason they were totally compressed samples and they sounded very bad, to save space.
That's why most games sound very muddy and sound like they're inside a box or behind a wall.
To understand it better, it was as if it had an internally compressed MP3 player, but it did not generate its own sound as the Sega Genesis did.
I only know of very few games that have good sound.
The only positive thing that the snes has in terms of sound is that it had a special internal system to achieve reverb and delay, so they could achieve a little more depth in the sound.
Although the genesis also had techniques to achieve it but it was more complicated, that's why the sound of the genesis sounds drier to us, but that is easily solved by taking the audio from the genesis to a reproduction equipment and adding that delay or reverb effect of external way and problem solved.
    8) the aesthetic appearance of the Sega genesis is incredible, classic and elegant while the aesthetic appearance of the snes is actually horrible, it looks like a cart, only the wheels are missing.
    9) a higher screen resolution, the snes is seen with less resolution and more blurry, not sharp
    10) the only advantage of the snes over the sega genesis is that it is much easier to program for it and many things could be achieved more easily.
That is why I see the Sega genesis as an exclusive console dedicated to only experienced programmers, the quality depended on the programmers and not on the machine, the snes is one more console of the trade, but even so the genesis broke the face of the snes in European territory by far.
That's why I say that the snes would be my second option, and I'm not detracting from the fact that it also has incredible games.
    All the best

Let's get one thing straight once and for all!In multiplatform games the Megadrive/Genesis is absolutely the better version 80-85% of the time. The games almost always run a lot smoother, have better animation, more paralax scrolling, and are simply faster without any slowdown. Most of the time they also tend to have bigger sprites. If there is something to be sacrificed SEGA will always do it for a smoother and more responsive gameplay,SNES will always sacrifice something for a better visual quality(it seems this is what is most important to them,it doesn't pay off,to say the least). In short Megadrive/Genesis games are always "more playable" than their SNES counterparts.
Most people in the US are blindly supporting SNES because it sold a little better there, while SEGA Megadrive/Genesis was dominating in Europe and Japan.
You hear "SNES is better" mostly from americans because they are the most vocal about it.While here,in Europe this is not even a question to discuss,SEGA is the absolute king.In fact during the 16 bit wars many people(including me) didn't even know there was a war!We just knew "SEGA is the thing!",and for a good reason,I might say!
Many US people defending SNES in multiplatform games probably never tried the Megadrive/Genesis version.

    Un saludo

      @novastorm2 2 роки тому

Well, to be fair, the SNES not only has more colours in almost every single scene, but it usually has an extra full background layers too, plus proper transparency in many places that's simply lacking on the Genesis. And there's times where the SNES could have been utilized even further to do stuff that simply wasn't possible on the Genesis, like it that later level with the huge electrical lightening sparking across the screen: Every time it flashes the SNES version could have used colour math to give the entire screen a slightly lighter glow that matched the color of the flash, which would have looked really nice. And there plenty of times where they're not using the full 3 background layers or transparency on the SNES when they could have. Also, it's very clear the music and sound fx weren't specifically optimized for SNES because they too could have sounded even better. Really, it's only the vertical view where the Genesis should have bettered the SNES here, and everything else could and should have went to the SNES.

Sound is always the funniest thing.
One of the most hilarious realisations I had recently is because of how the snes handles in-chip cartridges, and the available pinout, it's technically feasible to cram a YM2612 into a cartridge.
Obviously there are a long list of reasons why nobody ever did that, but it's technically possible, and since the audio output would be mixed in with the output of the snes audio chip, you could use both in parallel.
I can forsee a homebrew dev doing this if they really wanted to mess with people's heads.
The YM2612 is after all a standardised part that it might surprise you to learn is still in production and in fact can be bought for dirt cheap on ebay and other sources right now...

    • @gabegillette9647

I'll defend the SNES version. It may have a lower resolution, but the way it handled it results in the game being blurry, making everything blend together works in favor of the organic hand-drawn style the game was going for. The SNES also has a higher color depth as a compromise for the resolution. All these factors combined results in the SNES version looking stunning on a CRT. It looks like an actual cartoon. The Genesis version on the other hand looks almost too clean and very video-gamey. My critique of the Genesis music is much in the same vein, it sounds more chip-tuneish. I'm not going to knock someone for subjectively liking that style of music, but as compressed as it is, the SNES music sounds more like recorded music, not only that but it sounds MUCH closer to the Special Edition soundtrack, which is more or less the definitive version of the music. The SNES version is indeed missing some stuff, but so is the Genesis, the Evil fight just isn't the same without the demonic backdrop. Additionally, the Japanese version of Earthworm Jim on the SNES has reworked level design that improves the difficulty curve, as well as new graphical effects such as shells flying out of Jim's gun and trails of dust. The JPN SNES edition is probably my overall favorite version of the game.
At the end of the day, every version seems to have unique content and compromises, there really isn't a definitive version unfortunately, aside maybe the Win95 SE, but that's hard to find and almost impossible to run.

The version of Super Nintendo has shown better, in several stages has 3 and 4 plans of moves while the one of Genesis has only 2.
But some stages of the Genesis proved better like what happens in 15:16 with foreground and 29:00 with double scroll while the Super Nintendo has in the foreground static scroll.

Well, lets end this debate once and for all.
Conveyor belt is more detailed on SNES version. Sound effects for mini boss are different. SNES will use these SFX alot, the devs seemed to loving giving everything the explosion sound when they couldn't import the orignal sfx.
19:19 looks like they ran out of time here and finished the details on the SNES version. No background and a floating blaster. DOS version also has the background but nothing propping the blaster.
27:16 Taking advantage of Mode 7 and giving the circles a different color
Down The Tubes as a wavy effect on the whole stage on Genesis (which also shows black at the very top of the screen) but this effect is only in the background on the SNES version. Tubes have been redrawn for SNES making the tubes look naturally connected. They changed the whip hooks making them easier to see. The SNES version's assets are more detailed. So you can throw that argument out the window. The Genesis resolution doesn't really help with the timed areas because those areas are narrow and they redrew the areas to fit the SNES, They actually made the SNES version harder by moving a refill tube farther from the exit. They also put in some small background art they forgot to the genesis version. Down The Tubes is the most different from the two versions. It seems there was alot of feedback received from the Genesis version and they made changes accordingly and took the time to update some art while they where there.
Snot A Problem, SNES version has a unique background at the top, this is a theme with this version. Major Mucus has missing pixels from his hurt animation in SNES. Genesis version is the case and point on sound effects.
Level 5 and the secret level are fairly the same with once again, sfx sounding cleaner on the Genesis, SNES version has enemies placed is less annoying spots and adds a 1 up in a secret area. While not shown in this video, Monkey for a Head laughs when hit in the SNES version. I dunno if its the Genesis's sound limit as the reason he doesn't laugh. SNES version barrel chicken has a unique sound effect when hit compared to the Genesis version stock sfx.
For Pete's Sake seems to be another area of interesting revision. Where to start? Again this might be due to resolution changes and feedback. The palette was changed to cool colors for the SNES making everything softer on the eyes. The planet was changed and the background are new(SNES background scrolls). Both have more detail than the Genesis. The SNES version has a front layer at the bottom of the screen. This is completely new and unique to the SNES version. Even music has a completely different vibe Items are in different spots or changed, this is likely due to feedback. Pete's sound effect changed from a cut version of Jims "yip" to the first levels dog hurt sfx, likely for comedic reasons. The launch pads have a different sfx. Pete's home door was reversed from the genesis version its clearly programmed to not move with the scrolling screen even though you can see it moving.
well there the level that was likely removed because of the following, Nintendo of America strikes again or they actually ran out of memory as they calmed (its NoA).
Buttville has a different palette for SNES, likely to make everything easier to see. The Genesis resolution helps alot with platforming here more than any other level. Snot is no longer animated on the SNES :c
They changed order placements of who appears first in some of the credits and show they picked up a new artist, which is likely where the new art came from and got a new company for the Sfx which is why their different.
The Genesis versions unique sfx are cleaner and has more sfx but sadly the limited sound chip hold them back from really shining, which is likely why they made the special edition. The SNES version lacking detail is clearly untrue as they took time to update and even add detail as with overhauling Down the Tubes tubes. What version has better music is personal opinion and I fix Jim's blaster sfx to sound better on the SNES. The palette changes where likely requested by NoA as none of the other versions use them. The SNES version was seen as a revision, even though it looks clear they ran out of time again when looking at how they barely touched Buttvillie in terms of changes.
Thanks for doing this, its cool to see the little changes and end the arguments once and for all.

SNES has a yucky sound chip like there's cotton wool over the speakers and slow cpu so less responsive and slightly slower pace. People often say samples are clearer on the SNES but here you can tell the samples on the SMD is so much clearer and punchier. The music has the SMD as a clear winner. SNES has a wider colour palette and proper transparency but has worse resolution, cpu speed and sound.

Actually the Mega Drive had a higher resolution of 320x224 to the SNES's 256x224. SNES had a higher resolution of 512x448 but it was never used as it was limited to 16 colours. The video out's on the SMD were also much better. Also a real actual professional fm synthesizer dude! Using only samples gives you a potentially broader range of musical instruments but you lose clarity and alot of the time they are sampling fm synthesizers so it's just a muffled version of the SMD's fm chip actually making the sound at source. 100% fidelity dude. I'm not a fan of the orchestra hit instrument played at a 12k sample rate so that rules out 75% of all the music on the SNES for me.

    • @tskraj3190
      @tskraj3190 6 років тому +1

@@iwanttocomplain Actually that is technically wrong. The Mega Drive/Genesis had a fixed resolution of 320 x 220 and the SNES had a default of 256 X 220 but had a programmable display of up to 512 x 448. Most developers excluding Nintendo and a few others left the SNES display at default before the big class action lawsuit filed against Sega in 1994 for breaches of contracts with developers for agreed compensation. The contracts between the developers and Sega had detailed anticompetitive practices. After Sega settled for $3.8 million to those developers. Nintendo filed a lawsuit against Sega for Anticompetitive practices. In fear that Nintendo would do the same to them, the developers signed contracts with Nintendo stating they will no longer add any exclusive features to the Sega ports and not remove any features from the SNES ports. Sega lost 90% of their developers after the lawsuit, and games were being developed on the SNES in 400 x 254 or 512x448 resolution. Nintendo dropped the lawsuit in 1997 but by then the damage was already done. This is why the Saturn and Dreamcast failed because most developers stayed clear from working with them.

    • @iwanttocomplain
      @iwanttocomplain 6 років тому

@@tskraj3190 No games run above 256x220 on SNES. You can probably count them on one hand and the sure won't be moving very quickly. If Nintendo filed an anti-competition suit against Sega that is very rich. Also scaring developers away from Sega is hardly fair play is it?
The SNES cpu is tepid. Sega struck a deal with Motoroller to get the 7Mhz 68000 chips at 1/8th of the cost if they shipped enough units. Also, the integrated circuit on the SMD is far more efficient at moving Ram around the chips with a strong focus on a fast bus. The tight circuitry and overpowered cpu means it knocks the socks off the SNES in terms of raw processing power in sound, audio and computations.
The limited cartridge sizes in the 16bit era meant a 16bit pallet and pcm sound would quickly hoover up space and although slower moving games can look genuinely beautiful, it cannot achieve the amount of action on screen and retain a broad colour palette, complex music and demanding computation with it's limited bus speed and shared sound and main memory.
