Ya Olympus love ❤ sometimes this channel feels Lumix centric ❤
I use this alllll the time, you can get superb results hand-held with wide-angle lenses. The OM-1 seems to work better for me than the EM1x, but both are great. On Pixel phones you can get a similar effect by using the night-time setting and keeping the dot within the small circle: that would be a great addition to this mode on the OMS cameras.
I would love to see more videos like this. There is more to cameras than just sensor size, autofocus, image quality, which in my opinion, is so good for all modern cameras. It is nice to see the nits and bits that make cameras different from one another.
Thank you Emily. Love the channel
Love this kind of educational video. And showing examples of how to use certain feature is very motivating to go out and experiment. I'd watch more of that.
One thing to note about live ND, if you're in very bright settings and you need to use 1/100 or faster shutter speeds to get a proper exposure, the Live ND results can look quite odd with jagged edges and discontinuous streaks on moving objects.
Ooh that's a really interesting tip thank you - I haven't yet run into that problem as I've only ever used the feature in the gloomy UK and Faroe Islands. Definitely worth keeping in mind for sunnier situations!
I’ve just been using the high resolution mode for blurring out the people instead of using the nd filter.
Great demonstrative video! I always love these more than gear-related videos as they help me be creative and enjoy the art of photography more! Thanks
Great video, thanks!! More please 🎉
I liked the very creative shot of the still couple with people moving about and blurred.
Thanks
Thank you very much! 🙏
@@MicroFourNerds I learned something very valuable, so thank you 😊
I like this type of video because I just got my OM-1 mk2 and want to go into more depth about the computational features. Your explanations are easy to follow and nice to see examples from your efforts. Thanks for doing these!
One aspect that's being ignored by reviews for LiveND is that it effectively raise the dynamic range by 2-3 stops according to Photons to Photos, because of image stacking that improves signal to noise ratio. That's actually one part I don't understand Olympus. They might have advertised this feature wrong. Calling it LiveND is like a gimmick to a lot reviewers. They are better off calling it "equivalent ISO-32, ISO-16, ISO-8", which should bring huge attention and people would look at it much more carefully, because theoretically it is collecting much more light by stacking and it does achieve equivalent ISO effect, minus some read noise which is mostly negligible at the use case for LiveND anyway
Nice tips Emily! I do like the one with people walk around adding to the composition the most. Cheers.
I too love the carousel image and do appreciate you sharing this!
Feature explanations with examples are a great way to see what different models offer.
Hi Emily, thanks for posting this video it’s helped m a lot, also the nighttime long exposure one. I’ve been a subscriber for a few years now and just have to say you are looking in great shape. Please keep the videos coming , always enjoyable kind regards.
I think all the micro 4/3 UA-camrs should have an end of year or beginning of year or end of year, broadcast together like did other years with Rob and other OM systems & Panasonic.
The cityscape strikes me as more interesting than the carousel. That having been said, the carousel pic is quite nice.
Fantastic video, a very detailed explanation on how to use this feature. Much appreciated, would like to see more of this type of content. My favourite is the carousel.
Excellent video! More along those lines. Your distinction between Live Composite and Live ND was great! I have not explored those features yet. I have a new OM1 MKII .
Each time I see these videos, you make it more and more easy for me to trade in my Nikon z6iii back for my OM-1 system.
Subscribed because of this video. Thank you for your style!
Emily, LOVE IT! Okay, I have used composite live to do star trails and Live ND to get Birds on a pond (Ducks) which were either sleeping or just making little movement. I like the results of both, but I think the Live composite is my choice for my personal tests. You video and stills are superb .
Wow, that is such a cool feature! I would imagine another positive thing is that you don't need to adjust white balance like you would with a traditional ND filter.
Thanks!
Loved both the water and the carousel. Will try the method at some point. Thank you!
Wonderful clear explanation with excellent examples
Thats, what I was looking for. I bought an offer - OM 1 with 7-14. 2.8 for 1499€. Add to my still great Lumix G9. Expecting delivery tomorrow. Regards from Germany. A very helpfull presentation. Thank you.
Really good to see the creative benefits of Live ND. Really bad because I now may have to buy another yet camera.
Hi from Oz & thanks for a great video, I prefer the City scape photo, it turns the hustle & bustle of a city into quite a tranquil place.
PS, I've just subscribed 👍
fun and informative video. I think the long exposure function is very successful. I think the city photos are very successful. kind regards from the Netherlands❤
Great vid as always I enjoyed this type of video and the crowds on the street facing the church I must have a go 😊👍🏻
Excellent as always! One of these days I will bump into you around the city.
Definitely say hi if you do 😁
Informative and inspiring
I have to OM1 with several lenses, I think I'll head out this weekend and give this feature a try. 😊
Love your city, my dear. Great stuff.
Great vid! I for one would deff appreciate more videos highlighting features and how to use them.
A very enjoyable video.
I enjoyed the video. I think the one with the water is my favourite, but a hard decision as I liked them all! I’ve tried some ICM moon shots with LiveND, just focus on the moon with a long lens and move it left or right..a weird effect. I like the way it blurs people but can freeze that one person stood still talking on their phone or something like that.
I like this style of video!
Love all your videos - thank you!
Definitely like this type of video. Thanks
Excellent explanation 👌. Thank you 🙏
Great video, I've used live nd but learnt more by watching this! Thanks
Enjoyed this a lot. I don't have a camera with this feature but it does remind me to get a strong variable ND for my general purpose lenses.
Nice, helpful video, inspiring too, so thanks!
Great feature nice explained Emely 👍😀
Unfortunately my E-M10 (mk I) doesn’t have life-ND… 😏
I like the first image with the blurry pedestrians most… 😊
Yep; I'm out of luck as well with my E-M1 mk2. Didn't get introduced until the mk3.
I like the blurred pedestrian street shot the best.
Thank you! Loved it! Very helpful and understandable.
Even if you don't have an ND filter or Live ND, you can get a very similar effect by taking 5-10 normal shots (with a bit of time gap) and averaging them out in software. That said, the computational features available in OM Systems cameras are nothing short of amazing. (Incidentally, what's the brand of the tripod in the video? It looks neat).
Like it! More please!
I liked all of them!
Gear reviews are a dime a dozen so I really like the how to videos or have you used this feature on your camera
Fabulous - thank you.
Great video! More please.
Like the video and would like to understand how this works. If there is not a physical filter in the camera is it just lowering the ISO? Many reviewers never use the unusual features about a camera don’t even mention them! Would love to see you do a collab with other UA-camrs perhaps do a challenge how can you use the ND feature or some thing which both have, multiple exposure, focus stacking etc. compare and contrast how is handled in each system and how you have artistically interpreted the subject 😊
Excellent video, thanks so much! Will definitely try this out on my OM-1 II soon.
I do think it's funny how, early in the video, you talk about how you don't like setting out with lots of extra bits of kit like tripods and filters (which is exactly how I am) ... then all the demonstration photos you take later use a tripod! Would love to have seen how Live ND works with handholding, and how much of a limitation that would put on it. E.g. the carousel photos were great, but I wouldn't have a tripod with me to take them that way, so I wonder what would be achievable hand-held.
I was going to make a similar comment, would have loved to see the results and process of using Live ND while shooting handheld. Lovely format though, very engaging and fun to watch.
I have handheld Live ND shots without visible camera shake up to 2 secs.
@@jodeverill Thank you Olympus IBIS.

Wonderful !
great video!!!!!!
Thanks Emily, never tried Street Photography bevore
OM system have got some really cool photography features! It's a shame the Live ND doesn't work for video, because then you could effectively say that it has an internal ND (kinda...)
Thanks. Nice video. Have you tried Live Time vs Live Comp?
I learned something new today - that you can turn the live preview off! I briefly tried this when I got my OM-1, but hated the "laggy" look I was getting. Now I definitely need to try it again with the preview turned off.
One thing that I'm wondering about - how would it fare with panning style shots? One thing that I've found when doing airplane photography is that I have to stop down too much when wanting to do a panning shot, which significantly degrades sharpness. It would be excellent if I could use this feature to bring down my shutter speed without stopping down.
can you make a challenge for that video you are gonna make on the Lumix Leica 15mm f1.7 ? 😊 make something fun with that lens
I like the church image with the people churning around. Funny, I already own all the OM Systems hardware in this video, no sales for me!
Thanks Emily, great video. Also, are you able to share the tripod details you used in the video? Seems to be easy and light to carry around.
Sure I love it!! It's a Siuri one, and it weighs under 1kg. I bought it to take camping with me but found it to be so good I use it for most things 😊

Thank you as always. What about sunset / sunrise composite / ND?
I'm disappointed that Lumix cameras don't have Live ND. I was just thinking about using the Live Composition mode as a replacement when you brought it up in the video
Great video once again…I like the ND option (have never tried) but perhaps I am the odd person out as I generally dislike water images that are blurry, simply preferring photos of what waves and waterfalls are really like.
I totally get that! I think both choices are totally valid. I think it comes down to the type of scene... if you want a bit of drama and energy, it's best to freeze the water in place. If you're after creating something a bit more tranquil, then longer exposures can work well.
Oh, and the obvious follow-up to this video would be doing one on Live GND! (As found on the OM-1 II.) I know it's basically a way of doing Live ND but only on part of the scene, e.g. from the horizon line up to cut down on the brightness of the sky, but would love to see some examples of how best to use it, plus also some creative other uses for it that aren't just the most obvious thing.
I found this video very interesting. I didn't know there was a difference between Live ND and Composite mode. Are these features uniquely an Olympus thing?
Amazing info! Thanks a lot. I think this exists in om1 and om5 but not em10..
The less limited B(ulb) mode is something I miss with the G80 and I really love this feature on my Pentax K100D. I don't know what's the reason of the Lumix limitation (60sec) is - is it arbitrary in the firmware, a problem with the noise level of the CMOS or was it easier to implement with the old CCDs? (yes, the old Pentax adds up noise, but I like the brown-ish look of the result)
Too bad, there also is no open firmware extension like the Canon CHDK to add more sophisticated shooting modes and parameters. I can imagine, something like that might become the next big thing with system cameras.
Emily - another excellent video. Which APSC camera would you say has the most M43-like feature set? (EVF, IBIS, sealing etc.) :)
I'll be in your neck of the woods tomorrow, going to get a few photo's of HMS Prince of Wales from Birkenhead.
Hi! I've been watching your channel for awhile and just found out about Kidamento brand cameras and how despite being toy cameras for children, they're micro four thirds. I was wandering about if you'd be interested in doing a review on the K model. I've already purchased it for my toddler daughter, but noticed there aren't many reviews.
I just misread the title saying "Take day long exposures..."
Thanks for the video.
Just been using the high resolution mode instead of the nd feature for blurring out the people.
Live ND is a feature I would use. I’ve started doing intentional camera movement photography . I’ve tried ICM by turning the ISO down, the exposure compensation to -3, and aperture to f16. On a bright day these settings are insufficient. I need to use a ND filter.
I just purchased a G9ii at a smashing price so I’ll not be buying a new camera anytime soon. Too bad my EMD1Mii doesn’t have this feature. Love the 12-40 pro lens. I liked image #1 the most. As I like the motion blur I’d prefer if the blurry people were closer in the frame. Cheers.

Can I ask why the church scene was being shot in f4.5 please? Presumably, depth of field wasn't too much of an issue over such a large distance (or maybe it was) but then you could slow down the shutter speed further by using a smaller aperture instead of using the ND filters? Is the ND method better than making the aperture smaller?
Great video, l love the system and now am ready for a wide angle landscape lens, I am in between the 7-14 f2.8 or the 8-25 f4?
Oooh they're both excellent! The decision is: fast or versatile? If you have a lens covering the more conventional focal lengths, I'd say the 7-14mm 😊
@MicroFourNerds I have the M.Zuiko 150-400 for my wildlife, Then the 90mm f3.5 and the 12-40 f2.8,So which would be better for me to choose?
Hi Emily, Why not buy a remote trigger for your OM-1? An Om System RM-WR1 is reasonably inexpensive. It makes your life so much easier.
Have you ever done any Infrared photography? I just bought a Lumix FZ28 full spectrum converted for £45 waiting for it to arrive but IR looks really cool.
I did! I made a video on it recently 😁
ua-cam.com/video/doQuvIoQBC8/v-deo.html
Do you think that would work just the same with a ND filter attached to an analouge camera?
If you crank up the ND factor enough, you can make all the moving people disappear as if the city is deserted. Did you try that?
Hey beautiful, I just got Gh7 because I owned the sigma 18-35 sigma and the speedbooster, but I kind feel that the S5iix was the one but full frame lenses where too expensive for me, what do you think about the Gh7 for cinematic work?
Left field, but I have to ask has Lumix specifically my G85 have an equivalent.
I need to pick up an Olympus camera. I only have Panasonic cameras.
For this feature only? Buy some ND filters instead. They are cheaper than buying a new camera.
Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
My E-PL3 doesn’t have this😢
It's a bit less fancy, but if you wanted to give this technique a go, you could get some physical ND filters for your camera. I don't so love that with Live ND it's built in though. As I always forget to pack accessories haha
@@MicroFourNerdsI’m wanting to get e-m1 mk 1
@@MicroFourNerdsthe E-M1 was so far ahead of everything else when it debuted. I liked MFT since it was almost a clean sheet design.
@@tori8380 Another poster wrote this feature first appeared in the EMD1Miii. I own the Mii. A big difference between the original and Mii is the later has PDAF. One can buy the EMD1 cheap as chips for a very competent body.

Hey wait a minute.... My OM-1 doesn't have this feature... Oh hold on a minute..lol
When you shoot like this, with people in a city, do people approach you and ask what you’re doing, or is everyone cool with it? At least I assume you don’t know them?
I like the watery cityscape best, probably because there are no people there that would make me feel awkward. ;)

I really like olympus stuff. It's your fault, for a part.
Can this be used in any mode or is it only in manual mode?
