There were more laughs in these 3 minuets than in any sitcom on TV today. Why must everything be loud, obnoxious, dirty and uncomfortable today. Where is the writing the brought characters to life and into your home.
Mixed feelings about Reginald Perrrin, most of the humour was excellent (I watched it at the age of 9) and other bits less so! Still like CJ though, and Rossiter dying in 1985 was a tragedy!
@BaddaBigBoom I completely agree, modern sitcoms don't even come close. I do wonder when the program commissioners decided that hilarious, genuinely imaginative and original material was such a bad thing.
This show was so lacking in production values, but both great and super in writing, and CJ must have had such a riotous time playing his role ... I loved it when I used to watch it on KQED British Comedy Night in the 1980's. Wonderful show that sadly could not be done in America, at least not true to form or well.
Chambers Dictionary - de rigueur, adj, required by fashion, custom or the rules of politeness. ETYMOLOGY: 19c: French, meaning 'of strictness'. Hors d'oeuvre, noun (plural hor d'oeuvres or hors d'oeuvres), a savoury appetizer, usually served at the beginning of a meal, to whet the appetite. ETYMOLOGY: 18c: French, literally 'out of the work'.
Brilliantly written and brilliantly acted. John Barron never got the recognition he deserved.
I didn't get where I am today by being recognised.
@@ilokivioh, very good 👍
'What's de rigueur in Godalming could be hors d'oeuvre in Head Office'. Classic CJ line.
Timeless hilarious delight. Thanks.
Classic scene, especially considering, Leonard Rossiter (Reggie), wasn't even in it!!! Shows what a great cast & writing can do to hold a show
Very true

You sound like CJ
There's No decency or class. This was a must watch,in its day.
@@alanc1491 iamzbacku didn't get where is today by laughing at bad comedy.
the best comedy catchphrase ever
It didn't originate there , it was used in a Bilko episode in the 1950s and predated that too
Brilliant writing
And no clichés
I didn’t get where I am today with clichés
Neither Mrs CJ or I use clichés
A cliché to me is like a red rag to a bull
Absolutely brilliant!
Absolutely right as far as the corporate nonsense is concerned!!
This was a great scene from a very funny comedy series. John Barron was terrific as C J and wasn't Pauline Yates as Elizabeth gorgeous?
Elizabeth is stunningly beautiful. I didnt realise at the time!
She was stunning. And I also didn't realise....
Great letter David..........your best yet HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I didn't get where I am today by remaking legendary sitcoms!
I think the remake was quite good, if different- it simply lacked CJ
The art of the sitcom done properly - a genius series IMO
Super!
@BaddaBigBoom Excellent writing and a brilliant cast. Pure gold.

my dads fave comedy
There should be a new series starring Alan sugar as Reggie Perrun😂
Great, Super!
It wasn't till quite recently I realized how stunningly attractive Elizabeth was.
I've tried to stutter like that, and failed. Probably why I'm not an actor.

@HaniiPuppy LOL. I just watch a few minutes of the remake series, and it was terrible. It should never have been remade.
Yes, well, obviously a Cockup on the Catering Front.

Miles apart from the latest series with Martin Clunes. CJ is Priceless especially with the farting chairs in the Rise and Fall

i don't live in Godalming OR Climthorpe.
sigh.
Stella is sacked.
Goggle ming is Godalming-it's a small town in Surrey.
PBS in Maryland/Wash DC would rather show "As Time Goes By" or "Are You Being Served" in a neverending (expletive deleted) loop than this.
"as time goes by"has stuff bleeped out?im lost for words
mike morgan I didn't get to where I am today by being lost for words.
There's quite a lot of innuendo in "Are you being served" so well worth a chuckle.

Average actor and far too yooung for the role. Not a patch on the original CJ, just like the new version isn't a patch on the original series.
