Bommai Movie Synopsis: A man falls in love with a mannequin and imagines it to be real. But things get messy when the factory owner exports it to a showroom.
Bommai Movie Review: Radha Mohan is known for making largely satisfying family dramas with realistic portrayals of female characters. His Bommai is drastically different from the kind of films that he has made before. While it takes a lot of courage to do something out of one's comfort zone, it's equally important to make sure that the writing is sensible and effective enough to hold the viewer's attention. This is where Bommai fails, despite having an unusual premise.
Rajkumar (SJ Suryah) is introduced to us as a teetotaller who works in a factory that produces mannequins. One of the dolls reminds him of his lost childhood friend, whom he believed to be his whole world. He starts hallucinating at work and develops a special connection with this mannequin that has a mark on its face. He thinks it's a real person (Priya Bhavani Shankar) and falls head over heels in love with it. Trouble begins when the owner of the factory exports the doll to one of the showrooms in the city. This not only turns Rajkumar into a murderer but also urges him to go in search of his most special doll.
The second half is all about him spending time with the doll in the showroom and how his life gets complicated even further.
The premise and the set up of this film, initially, excite us and make us believe that we are in for something that we haven't witnessed before. The core idea has great potential for some unique subplots to be built around it. But Radha Mohan decides to stick to the romance between the protagonist and the doll most of the time without actually getting into the complications. Of course, a murder happens, and Rajkumar even takes on the police officials in the climax because of this very issue, but these conflicts mostly stand apart and don't actually take us into the protagonist's world.
In the latter half of the film, we have Rajkumar joining the showroom as a sales person to spend time with the doll. While it's perfectly fine to show the romance between the man and the doll for a while to help the audience understand the emotions involved, things turn tedious when they start singing duets and talking poetically for a long time. The making is decent, and Yuvan Shankar Raja's background score, especially the reimagined version of the yesteryear classic Deiveega Raagam, is quite haunting and elevates certain sequences. But that isn't enough. The climax, too, is a big letdown.
The best part of the film is the lead actors, who have delivered their best. SJ Suryah's performance is quite realistic and intense, especially in the climax. He carries the entire film on his shoulders along with Priya, who looks great on screen. Overall, Bommai could have been yet another good film in Radha Mohan's filmography if he had worked a bit on incorporating some real conflicts.
