    In Holland birthdays are celebrated by decorating the living room with colorful garlands. The children also get their family's presents at the breakfast table, and as the birthday child enters the room, the other family members sing the equivalent of happy Birthday. Lots of fun! I carried on that tradition with my own children (I married an American and moved to the U.S.). The birthday child often would get to choose what they'd want for dinner and most always they would ask for pancakes. Often these are also served for the children's birthday party. Anyway, I love the kagemand tradition! I may make one for my grandson's next birthday as he is 1/8 danish :)

    My children are 17 and 15. We have had all the theme parties. They went to a private catholic school so I baked 50 cupcakes and my children would
    Walk around the whole school and hand out cup cakes to all their classmates and then to all the staff. The sisters, janitor secretary. It was wonderful. Then we would have a family party and then a kids party. Mostly home but at roller rinks and bouncey houses. Whatever they wanted. Now I always carry I. The tradition that they get their favorite meal and favorite birthday cake from scratch of course. My husband loves brownies so I make him a brownie cake:). Thanks for sharing

    In the Netherlands kids normally invite about 5 children (the friends you are always playing with) for a birthday party, existing of doing something together and have a meal (chips/fries, pancake or pizza). On the cake (taart) there will be a burning candle with the figure of how old you are now or there will be small candles, as many as your new age, and the one who has the birthday gets to blow them, all in one go.

    Another explanation why the Danes are so Happy!!! Everything is always fun... a birthday party in a snowy forest... unforgettable!
    Really love how all kids are included in the party celebrations.... a sensible way for kids to learn to accept all others regardless of how alike or different they are from each other :)
    What a divine idea for a birthday cake... danish pastry with marzipan!!!! Sounds absolutely magnificent! Hope you all enjoyed indulging in that deliciousness and that dinner was just as wonderful... Tyllikke to your DS18 Diane! :) Helen

    You're pretty good for tourism :) I want to visit Denmark now - never was on my long list of countries previously. So many countries to visit!!! My main reason of following you is the kick up the bum and motivation you give me as I try to prepare our small cluttered unit for evaluation to pay it off fully this month. I've also quit full time work to study again (I'm in my late 40's) so I'm hoping clearer spaces will give more serenity and calm for my busy partner, our active 10 year old and myself.

    Happy birthday to your son Diane. I looooove the cake man and cake lady idea, how awesome and Danish pastry, could it get any better, with marzipan and chocolate icing, all it needs is either a coffee or a cuppa. Have a good one xoxox

      It may be your ancestors traditions too. Moeller is a Danish last name. We spell it "Møller", though. Mølle means mill, like in wind mill. Møller is the name of the person operating the "Mølle".

    Hi Diane. You always have such a good energie wich makes me smile everytime I see one of your videos :-)
    Thank your son for beeing good this year...we had sun all the way to jylland :-)
    Do you know the tradition where the birthday child is sitting under the table while the parent cut pices of cake and he or she says which guests should have it?? And when the head is cut off all the children screem?? thats funny to.. :-D. I think we do it so no child should feel that they got less cake than the others. (med vilje).
    I have a cleaning question-can I write in any video? and may I ask in danish? (my spelling you know :-P ) Thanks for YOU.

    That was very interesting! I love hearing about your traditions! Do you make the cake or buy it? Is there bakeries that keep these on hand since everyone celebrates this way?

    • @whiteedk
      @whiteedk 6 років тому +3

      Donna Wiseman most People order them from a bakery. Danish pastry is so hard to make at home. But sometimes they are made from Cheux pastry and that is mainly the homemade ones.
      There are also more traditional layered birthday cakes with thin sponge cake layers with jam and pastry cream in between and decorated with freshly whipped cream

    I'm obsessed with that clock!!! Where can I get one??!!
    Also, I've read that when the birthday person is cutting the head off the cake, it's tradition to scream while doing it. Is that true?

  • @suem6004
    @suem6004 6 років тому +2

    Very interesting. Is the danish cake like a kringle? Are there special fillings you can get?

    • @whiteedk
      @whiteedk 6 років тому +2

      Sue M yes it is. In Denmark there isn’t really choices when you order Kringle. There are primarily the marzipan paste in Kringle or maybe pastry cream, but otherwise in Danish pastry there is just raspberry jam

  • @estreetangel

    My daughter is 28 now so I don't know the current fads for kids' birthday parties, but when she was little, the big thing was bowling parties. The party would meet at the bowling alley, bowl for awhile and then go to a party room for pizza and cake and to open presents. Miniature golf parties were also popular. And of course, house parties are never out of fashion.
    Also there was a rule of thumb on how many kids you'd invite of one child per age of the birthday child. So if one was turning 7, he/she could invite 7 kids to his/her party.
    In my day it was funny to sing a slightly rude version of "Happy Birthday":
    Happy Birthday to you,
    You live in a zoo.
    You look like a monkey,
    and you smell like one,too!
    I have no idea if kids still sing that. lol
    BTW, I am in the US.
