- In today's episode, I discuss Philadelphia Eagles stacked, off ball LB, Ben VanSumeren. He is one of the best athletes in the NFL at the LB position. However, he is very much a raw prospect. He is still learning the position, but I do feel he just might beat the odds and not only make the roster, but potentially contribute by season's end.

Makes sense, but I do wonder why the Eagles didn’t even at least offer Shaun Bradley a summer camp invitation?
Why he hasn't shown any ability to play LBer in the NFL. Ben has let him compete with dean who I think is going to be a surprise cut at end of preseason
@@kenlewis5932 Ok, Nakobe Dean getting cut while an undrafted LB stays on the roster is as delusional as it gets.
I’m open to VanSumeran being a decent LB in year 3. I’m even open to the dude flashing, but stop with the BS of instant Pro-Bowler from being undrafted nonsense. The dude already got burnt in coverage pretty thoroughly when he got his shot.
With Shaun Bradley, he was drafted in a year when Eagles rebuilt the LB corp. with expensive free agents, year two he had a different DC and then sustained a major injury. It’s more than fair to say he didn’t get a fair shot at playing time.
Had he not been injured it would have been Bradley at the end of last year getting time on the field instead of VanSumeran. I have no idea what he would have done, but I would like to at least see the dude get a shot rather than get just get lost in the personnel shuffle and dropped off the roster.
@@kenlewis5932 To add even more this stinks like an analytics department decision when the analytics department shouldn’t even be making decisions on in-house personnel. They certainly can make suggestions, but even that is stepping over coaches and what they are actually paid to do.
@Imhotep397 have you watched dean in coverage? His last game played he was targeted then left injured (what's new) I am not saying BVS is going to be the best but upside matters and special teams will be important which he is better at then Dean. Dean will just be another bust 3rd round pick can't stay healthy and hasn't shown anything while he was healthy. I think the main guys at line backer for the future are White Trotter and BVS as top back up. Dean is listed as the same weight as Trotter or a bit heavier now we know that he isn't what's list more likely 215 pounds and that won't cut it as a LBer in the NFL
@@kenlewis5932 While it’s easy to just drop players and kill their careers it’s very unlikely that the Eagles give up on Dean after a single year. It’s just not going to happen. Aside from the upside when/if gets healthy and the years of experience there are far too many Georgia players that look up to him as a leader for organization to let him after such a short period time without destroying the locker room morale.
I agree, no way they let BVS hit the waiver wire. They will cut a player they know will make it through. With Shawn Bradley I figured his injury was worse than we thought or still has an issue.
I think the Eagles learned their lesson from Christian Ellis getting claimed to do all they can to avoid that happening again.
Hey Gate, i have a serious question. I think the Mekhi Becton signing is an extremely underrated signing in terms of depth piece behind Lane Johnson. Do you think he can Jeff Stoutland could develop him into a potential starter at right tackle after Lane retires
What's up Cameron! Mekhi is still very young, and the underlying talent alongside the measureables is an enticing pairing. I can't say the signing will 100% workout, but I definitely think it was a smart gamble. Not a lot of swing tackles floating out there with this kind of talent. He needs to take care of his body though, and we will have to see how he approaches this opportunity. I'm actually a fan of the Darian Kinnard, Mekhi Becton, and Matt Hennessy signings. I think we did a really good job of working the free agency market, and identifying young players with upside, that of course have some inherent risk. Still think this was a very good free agency period along the O-Line for the Eagles.

I thought he looked pretty good last summer but just needed to be coached up another year and has a shot this year
Multiple teams said his tape against the giants/colts was fantastic & he wouldn’t make it through waivers. It’s not as a long a shot as you think. If the eagles keep trotter over van Sumeren they’ve made a mistake. Burkes will be dropped & brought up from practice squad like morrow was.
Do you think Covey loses his roster spot this season being he only brings return specialist to the table. Especially with several rookies who have good return ability who aren't one trick ponies. J Ngata could possibly beat him out being outside of Campbell we are thin at back up outside Wr Depth.
Unfortunately I don't think Jalen hurts has the arm to fully take advantage of a guy like Ross
I love Ben and he will definitely not make it to the practice squad and they should of learned their lesson.
