Only Craig would take a match against himself. Danaher could coach one of Craig and Gordon would have to coach the other. Then we could find out which Craig is better. But it would have to be a five minute match to cut out all that hand fighting and crotch grabbing.
Totally agree on the long matches. I get that these are super high level competitors, but I saw the last 2 hours of the event and I believe I remember seeing 1 maybe 2 subs.
These videos are epic. Seriously Craig, don't stop doing these. The 2nd best grappler in the world breaking down top tier grappling matches ... only Gordon couldn't stomach these
@@littlejohn6101 Kaynan being a weight class up and making zero credible sub attempts doesn’t exactly make a strong case for him over Craig p4p…lay and pray doesn’t make you the GOAT.

Driving that 2022 Corolla around for as long as Gordon did probably had a lasting effect on his mental health. No one should be expected to recover from that level of suffering, he might never be the same
There are pros and cons to short matches. The main problem with short matches is you have the guys that arent fighting to win, they are fighting to score, so you get no submissions. The problem with long matches is that they can be boring, especially for someone who doesnt know much about jits. On the other hand, long matches show who is truly the best.
Lots of people watch marathons. But I get your point. However rounds are stupid (in my opinion) and having longer matches is nice because you see who is the most complete grappler. However I think 20 min max is good.
I don't mind the occasional no time limit. it's such a different kind of match that it doesn't really compete with much faster paced matches. there's a place for it
Although I personally enjoyed the 'no time limit' format (allowing me to wrap my head around the interplay of strategy and technique) - I have to agree with Craig. As one of the best competitors in the world - Craig's opinion carries a lot of weight. Boxing went through a similar evolution - moving away from the 'no time limit' format to the 12, 10 or even 8 round formats. In Muay Thai - five rounds is enough to accomodate both the 'warm up' (betting) rounds and the 'deciding' rounds. Whether we adopt a multiple or single bout format - I think Craig is right; it needs to be limited to 30-minutes or less. Cheers from Geelong Craig.
Every championship match should be SUBMIT the champ or you lose. Can't do it within time limit, you go home no matter how well you did. Challengers would be out there like animals and champs would have to fight for their lives.
With super matches like this i lrefer long matches. These short ones would be guys just trying to score and not finish the fight. With the king or no time limit there is no doubt who is better.
There isn’t an issue with no time limit because it forces those who stall (Nicky Rod) to eventually have to do BJJ. If they didn’t stall every match and actually did Jiu Jitsu there wouldn’t be a need for a no time limit. If you watch Gordon pass, he is doing Jiu Jitsu. It’s constant pressure with no back steps. If you watch Nicky Rod pass it’s maintaining a distance, in and out, try one pass and back up. The issue isn’t no time limit, the issue is everyone stalling in every rule set that they aren’t required to actually do Jiu Jitsu.
Totally agree on long matches I just find my self skipping forward a couple minutes and they will literally be in the same position. I find they rather need a new point system which involves both parties to be constantly moving around a bit more. I agree with possibly having rounds. But yeah nothing good happens after 3.
Completely agree regarding the time limits. Ten minute matches and start aggressively giving stalling penalties like they do in judo with x amount of penalties meaning you are DQd. You get loads more action (and loads of matchs decided by DQ but its worth it imo).
Thoughts in having 10 -15 minute matches sub only. If no sub then it's a straight draw regardless if an opponent was holding a dominant position, having passing success and sub attempts it would still be considered a draw (even though the crowd and competitors would know who won). This completely takes out judging/ref decision. And have incentives for competitors like a win bonus $$$5 - 10k (maybe more for bigger names or if the promotion can manage more depending on federations budget etc) Thoughts?
That's the most logical step towards making BJJ more realistic and entertaining. Nobody wants to see 2 guys grappling 1 hour for points. People want to see submissions.
Pretty sure Metamoris tried this. Ofc, they had a whole host of problems that caused the org to fail outside of the rule set. They actually brought in judges at one point because lesser known guys would stall against the big names to have a draw against a name vs a loss. Im also pretty sure competitors were only paid for winning, nothing to show. I don’t know if that’s what you are suggesting but seems tough to attract names to risk not getting paid to grapple someone that won’t engage. Flo typically does win and sub bonuses. Personally, I would like to see aggressive penalties that after 2 or 3 they take money off the fighter’s purse. They are paid to show and put on a performance, not eek out a victory through gamesmanship.
Hope Nicky and Felipe got paid. They saved the event - especially Nick. Mad respect to Nick for coming in on short notice, hope he got compensated for it!

I feel as though a no time limit fight is how you really find out who’s the best. With a grudge match like GR vs Peña I’d prefer to see no clock but almost any other time 15 minutes would be perfect

Long matches is fine, but do rounds like every other sport like boxing mma etc. 5 minute rounds, 30sec rest, time for coaching, wipe athletes and mat off between rounds.
I like this idea a lot. We should cut it off at six rounds though, equating to 30 minutes. I like the EBI rules at that point. Having it end with regulation or points is never definitive because people can work point systems and stall. no one wants to see a decision based on someone’s subjective opinion, we want finality
They did that. Matches where boring as fck. They just did the bare minimum to win a round and then stall the rest of the time. The organization decided to stop investing in bjj. It was gi only if I remember correctly.

Pena vs Nicky was boring because how the two guys competed, not because of the rule set. Grappling events need to come up with a way to SEVERELY punish stalling which is probably easiest in a points rule set. Give out negatives, encourage action at all time. Sure, Pena was being a supine sloth but Nicky's posture alone when in half guard tells the story of how little he engages unless he can lock a body lock. Hips super far back, hand weaved through the leg and just pushing himself away from the guard player. I do think Nicky should've gotten that decision, based on the last sub attempt and the nearly solidified passes earlier. Pena got good looks at the back and the other leg locks were not close at all. Not a robbery imo but still think Nicky should've won. That being said, grease aside, that was a stall fest and I think that's why the judges may have given it to Pena. Nicky was way too cavalier about disengaging all the time. A lot of back tracking. Gordon actually put it pretty well. Nicky's too opportunistic instead of creating opportunities through actual pressure
There was actualy something like that: ACB JJ 5 rounds x 5 min 1 min rest. It was the last time the Gordon Ryan lost... to Vinny Magalhaes. I find this format much more applealing, there is more action as athletes have time to rest and rehydrate between rounds.

nicky ryan is so gay, i love it!

Seriously though. Once is a mistake, but getting accused of it multiple times, by multiple competitors isn't a good look.
