- US President Joe Biden has said the Baltimore bridge collapse was a “terrible accident”, and that the federal government will pay for the bridge to be re-built.
"The federal government will pay for the entire cost of that bridge," Biden said in an update to the media on the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.
The president also said the search and rescue operation is the "top priority", and the army are on the scene to start removing the wreckage.
The bridge snapped and plunged into the Patapsco River at about 01:30 ET along with vehicles and people after a container ship crashed into it.
A huge search operation is under way for six missing people, authorities say, while two others have been pulled from the water.

St. Petersburg FL is my hometown and I was about 8 when the Skyway bridge collapsed. No visibility, no warning. So many people, including a Greyhound bus full of people, went over the edge and died. It's incredible that the captain was able to warn them & they shut down the bridge! Saved so many lives. The traffic situation is gonna suck for a long time, but it could have been so much worse.

It is looks like Electrical power black out occured just before the accident. Even if ship crew tried hard crash astern movement. It is very difficult to stop its forward movement due to the ship's huge mass and river water current force.
So if authorities had been warned and traffic to the bridge had been stopped, I don’t understand why there were still contract workers on the bridge and they weren’t evacuated before impact?!!

Weren't tugboats traditionally used to help avoid loss of control when entering and exiting harbours?
Sad that two professional harbour pilots on board didn't have the sense to drop all anchors when the ship lost all power the first time, stopping her and addressing the mechanical issues before proceeding to the most important part of the passage. As a tugboat captain this makes me mad to watch.
Can you drop an anchor without power on a boat like that? Generally hydraulic, right? We can on ours, but that's just a 45-foot sail boat. Genuine question.

Sure, I can give Trump credit for some things he did that seemed to help the average American. The NAFTA reform that Biden supported and even Elizabeth Warren voted for is one. He signed additional Federal funding for HBCUs. He also signed into law a bill that released tens of thousands of Federal prisoners who had already served time for nonviolent offenses. This the result of work by Van Jones workung with Jared Kushner. So, Trump wasn't all bad but the bad definitely outweighed the good and this Bridge collapse is arguably one of the bad consequences of Trump's Presidency.

There was no alert to the ship going 8 nots. Man at bridge says : dont worry about the ship it knows not to hit the bridge. That's all everyone understood And was wrong not to take caution. It doesn't matter how safe it seems, always be cautious about plans trains and ships coming close to you.

Besides, I've lived San Diego since 2007 and we've never been overrun by marauding bands of immigrants. Yes, our system needs fixing but for all of American history we've had free flowing immigration to the U.S. Until the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 there were no Federal limits to immigration. Laws for immigrants were set at the state level. There weren't really any lines to get in or to attain citizenship. So, most European immigrants had it much easier than today's mostly non-European immigrants have it today.

President Biden said everything that needed to be said with compassion and resolutions for now. This accident hasn't even been 24horus since it happened and I live in Maryland the state of the bridge collapse. For now we focus on the recovery of loved ones, the first responders to do what needs to be done and pray for the families (workers on the bridge at that time performing road repairs and passenger vehicles) and get through this horrible tragedy.

It's not necessarily the ship company's responsibility. The responsibility will eventually be determined. There's also the issue of whether or not the Federal and or state government of Maryland were negligent in not making the Bridge more structurally sound.

I think it was in part to make up for Stalin's hardships inflicted on Ukraine. 60 years passed before Russia took back control in 2014. That's a good deal of time to become politically acculturated to any given government. I'm not saying Crimea has to be Ukrainian again, just stating facts.

Besides, before the Russians came Crimea was the home of the Tatars. They're a mix of Mongols and Turks who adopted Islam. They were massively deported during the Soviet era. Some returned after Ukrainian independence and are still there today. I'm not saying Crimea can't be under Russian control just stating facts. However, at least one Tatar journalist has been barred from reporting in Ukraine or posting any content online because the Russian government didn't like what she was saying.

If the bridge closed immediately after a car crossed beyond that point of closure, and there was no other way to inform the driver that the bridge was now closed. At 1.6 miles long, it would still take 2 minutes to cross the bridge even at 50 miles per hour.
